Since Daisy's previous post discussed ads that we would not esrpond to I thought it would be fun to write the ad that would catch your own eye. I have to think about this so I won't go first. It might be useful to cut and paste from existing personals on the internet to make the perfect ad.

I've spent hours mulling this one over, and only ended up with something about 4 pages long! So I'll use jessiecarole's ad as a starting point. I'd omit the 'non-smoker' part, and maybe put in 'all parts in good working order' (given the age group I'm in!!), and somewhere there'd be a reference to 'house-trained' and 'good sense of humour' and 'with good values' or 'knows how to treat a lady', maybe 'VTPR if suited'. Gee, already it's getting longish! Still thinking it out.

Meyermike, Why grow citrus? Many years ago my then girlfriend had unlimited access to citrus at Christmas. I ate lots of it and put several seeds in a potted plant. I think every seed sprouted. I was hooked. I gave them all away. Later I raised orange trees on purpose (for the challenge). They were left out and froze. Several years ago I received an orange tree as a gift. It has produced some fruit for three years. 1. For the challenge. 2. For the envy of those who are either unable or unwilling to grow them. 3. The one that I have produces the best tasting orange that I have ever eaten (in memory). 4. I have four grown children that covet my oranges. 5. I would like to have enough to share them with my 12 grandchildren also. 6. The aroma is so intense that we cannot keep it inside the house. We keep it in the attached garage in the winter. 7. There are too many reasons to list them all.

Hmm, wonder how much this makes - 1 lb of beef and 2 cans of beans is a lot less than I usually make in a 6-qt slow cooker, and with a teenage boy I'm lucky to get 2-3 dinners out of it (even serving it over rice or pasta)? So, yield and the value of canning a few pints aside, I see some things you might want to change or question with the recipe: 1. Already-canned beans might not be too appetizing after cooking and processing - like your neighbor's ham and beans. If you want to can the meat and spices and add the beans upon opening, that might give a better result. Or use rehydrated dried beans like Ball and NCHFP call for. 2. The Ball recipe uses 5 lbs of ground beef and 2 cloves of garlic to make 6 pints of chili. Sounds good to me - I'd prefer more beef to the garlic in "your" recipe, you can add as many beans as you'd like later. The NCHFP uses 3 lbs of beef, 3C of dried beans, I'm not sure how many cups that is rehydrated, but yield is 9 pints so 1/3lb of beef and 1/3C of dried beans per pint, you'd have to see how many pints the recipe you posted makes to compare. NCHFP doesn't use garlic but uses 2.5C mixed onion/pepper total. This might be significant in determining proper processing time. 3. I'd go with the dried herbs instead of fresh, and also may want to dial back a bit since taste can intensify in storage. I'd cook it with whole bay leaves, then pull them out before canning. The Ball recipe also uses 6C of canned tomatoes, with juice (so 1C per pint of chili). The recipe you posted uses a quart (which may work out to 1C per pint of chili) of tomato juice - still wondering what difference does it make if the skins were left on before straining the juice? I don't think there would be any difference between using canned tomatoes or store-bought tomato juice, I'll let Dave or Carol comment on that, also on the cocoa powder. For reference, here is the Ball recipe (no beans). NCHFP (with beans) is linked below 5 lb ground beef 2C chopped onion 2 cloves of garlic, minced (about 1 tsp) 6C canned tomatoes, with juice 1/2C chili powder (you can substitute your own dried spices) 4.5 tsp salt (or to taste) 1 red chili pepper, finely chopped (optional) 1 tsp cumin seeds (optional) 1. Prepare PC, jars and lids. 2. In large SS pan, over medium heat, brown beef. Drain off fat. Add onions and garlic, cook until onion is tender. Add tomatoes, (spices) and salt. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and boil gently for 20 minutes. Skim off excess fat. 3. Ladle hot chili into jars, leaving 1 inch headspace. Remove air bubbles and adjust HS, if necessary, by adding hot chili. Wipe rim with paper towel moistened with vinegar. (then describes how to put lid on, I assume you know that). 4. Place jars in PC, adjust water level (?) lock lid and bring to a boil over medium-high heat, vent for 10 minutes, then close vent. Continue heating to achieve 10 lbs pressure. Process pint jars for 75 minutes and quarts for 90 minutes. 5. Turn off heat. Let pressure return to zero naturally. Wait 2 minutes longer, then open vent. Remove canner lid. Wait 10 minutes, then remove jars, cool and store. FWIW, I think you should just pick one of the approved recipes (beans or no beans) and adjust the dry spices to your taste so you're sure of the proper processing time/pressure. I do read everyone's responses before posting my own. How many postings have we seen where in the middle of the responses there is "I didn't have time to read everyone else's answers, but I think the solutions is to [whatever]," when somebody up higher has already suggested that. To me, it's just disrespectful. Think about it this way: We are having conversations here. Now picture yourself out to lunch with a handful of friends, trading opinions. But you are zoning out, thinking about your grocery list, checking out the dessert at the next table. Then you make a contribution to the conversation--the same contribution that one of your friends made 10 minutes earlier. What you've basically done is tell that friend that she wasn't worth your time to listen to, that you really don't value that person. Now I know many of you wouldn't do that in person, yet we do it on these boards, just because it's a "virtual" acquaintance? (I'm sure there've been studies into the things we dare say to online acquaintances but would never, ever say to someone's face.) (And I think everybody is strapped for time, so that's really not an excuse, IMHO.) I think it's slightly different if someone here has posted a question asking if she should rip out her powder room's tile floor (just an example! OP of that, don't get upset!)--then she's really looking to see how the yes/no votes stack up.

You didn't get that book yet did you? If you email me privately (my email is linked), I'll send you my copy. The cover's been swapped out because once I started reading it, the information was SO relevant to all of Ex's nasty tactics that I needed to read the whole book NOW, which meant reading in front of DS. And with a title like 'Divorce Poison', he was sure to ask a bunch of questions. So ignore the replaced cover... But READ THIS BOOK! OK - You know exactly what BM was doing. She was trying to make SS feel guilty about having fun with you two so he'd only have fun with her. Then if he doesn't enjoy his time with you two, if he knows how sad his mom is without him, if he thinks you're mean, etc. -- he'll want to spend all his time with her. And as uncomfortable as it will be, you have to confront BM's tactics. Not to BM, because she can deny and rage and scream and cry all day long. But to SS. BM is pulling a basic 'spoil sport' move. Since she didn't get to participate, she doesn't want SS to have had any fun. SS has probably seen it on the playground or at a birthday party -- where a kid who doesn't win the game sulks, pouts or bullies. Or where a kid who wasn't invited to the party badmouths the birthday boy or activity. I'd use exactly that type of scenario to explain the tactic. Once SS understands the kids version, tell him that the kids' solution is to not mention Billy's birthday party when they know Sammy isn't invited. Or if Sammy finds out, to briefly acknowledge the party, then quickly change the subject to something that will make Sammy feel better in a good way. "Yeah - it was fun. Do you want to play kickball?" Then help SS develop a few "Wanna play kickball?" lines of his own. The next step is to explain that this is what his mom was doing with the movie incident. She wants SS to have fun with her, and because she sometimes gets mad at Daddy, she sometimes forgets that SS should be able to have fun with Daddy too, not just with her. That is the simple truth, factually stated, at a level he can understand. You then say that SS should be able to have fun at BOTH houses with ALL of the adults who love him, and that he needs to have some "Wanna play kickball?" lines ready to use with Mom. You saved "Ice Age" for her -- That's the perfect line. And if it doesn't work, SS needs to be able to say directly "I want to do fun things with BOTH my parents, Mom. There's nothing wrong with that!" Followed by a quick "Gott go now -- Love You -- Bye!" It's the truth. It's direct, assertive, not rude, not unkind. It's taking a positive stance for himself, and if he can do this, you will all be better off.

Having been in that area before (online dating), I can say what attracts me to the guys:

outdoorsy, energetic, great sense of humor, loves variety and likes to travel, likes kids (... if he has a few, even better...)...

I guess there are a million things but there are some things that you can't be too picky about, I guess. I prefer tall guys but my history shows me with some really short men. I can 'seek' the tall ones but it seems the short ones end up my way.

kind of the same with smoking... I severely dislike smoking cigarettes but I do like a good cigar on occasion (like Clinton... I do not inhale...)

I am not interested in "knows how to treat a lady" because I almost knocked my last date over with the car door as he was running around to let me out. I like non gender specific politeness. I really hate when a man puts his hand in the small of my back and maneuvers me to a seat in a restaurant because "ladies first". I dont mind going first if there is no host/hostess but I dont like being used as a shield.
I said tall because tall men make me feel smaller and thats a good thing right now. My self esteem could use a boost. For dancing (and other activities) having someone your own size is a plus.

the sad truth is that the older you are, the more life experience you have, the more particular you become just at the point where your power to attract begins to wane. (laughing) I am talking about myself here.

and I am not interested in men younger than myself (or much older for the equipment failure problems Daisy mentioned and, sadly, the worry about other health problems).

so the field is pretty narrow for me.

BUT (lest this be TOO depressing), I like my life which is why I will be careful about who I invite to share it.

OK. This took a while. I wouldn't respond to a personal ad but if friends wanted to indroduce me to a fixer upper, he would have to be considerate of others in all things. I could stop right there if necessary.

But if I may choose further, he would be between 55 and 70 and have no facial hair (head hair optional), be a non-smoker, a non or social drinker, and a heavy reader. He should speak grammatical English, like the musical arts as well as rock and roll, like good food and dining out, like to travel, be financially comfortable, be computer literate, be tolerant of all religious beliefs, and be content in himself.

(Hi jessiecarole!)

It's interesting thinking about what I'd want in a personal ad/prospective partner and what I actually currently have in my SO.

I'd want an introspective single person of a certain age who likes cats and has compassion and a social conscience.

I don't care about the door opening thing in and of itself. However, the intentions behind the door opening do matter. As it turns out, my SO is a door opener.

Mine would be someone between 58 and 65, physically fit, no facial hair, non-smoker, non-drinker, no bad habits. Likes animals and country life, gardening, and enjoys nature, and is kind. Seeking someone in the same age group. So many of the adds that I see for men my age, they want a woman not older than 35 or 40. Does that leave me with the 90 year olds?
