Hi Everyone,
We just bought a lovely 1940, brick Cape Cod that needs a lot of work. We got a good deal and (thanks in part to this forum!) we can do a lot of the work ourselves.
The previous owner finished the basement with paneling in the 60's/70's. He put plastic sheeting against the cinderblock and framed over it. He also vented his dryer into the drop ceiling for what looks like a VERY long time.
I've started removing the paneling and have been noticing condensation behind the plastic. I tore some of the plastic and it stinks like moldy bread.
I'm 97% sure the moisture is condensation, not leakage, and I've read that this is why we don't use plastic sheeting anymore, no air flow for evaporation.
Here's my plan, please tell me what you think:
I'm gonna strip the walls, studs, etc. to the bare cinderblock. Clean it with a moldicide and seal it with DryLoc.
Then I'm going to refinish it properly ... and with drywall.
Anyone have any tips or better ideas?
Thanks in advance!
