lignin free - hope this doesn't happen to you

Once again, I need your advice. I have discovered something that made me so frustrated. I bought my original scrapping pages/albums/etc at Michaels. So far, I have completed 7/98-12/98 and 7/99-12/99. (I'm currently working on the first 6 months of 99.) Well I went to Michael's for some refill paper and guess what: the refill pages that I've been using say Acid Free, but they don't mention lignin free. I am just sick about this. I have about 60 completed pages, and now I am worried that it's all been for nothing. Should I try to do them over? Should I finish '99 on my current pages so it will all be together? Or should I begin immediately with acid and lignin free paper and hope for the best with the others? Any ideas out there? I can't believe that I've put this much time and effort into these pages and that they won't look this great for my kids to enjoy. Thanks for your help.

Dear Anne,
I would not worry too much over what is already done. Most times acid free paper is also lignin free too, whether it is marked as such or not. Especially paper sold for photos. Lignin is a part of the plant fiber or pulp, that is used to make cheap paper. Most of the paper used and made for scrapbooks is NOT cheaply made, especially when you compare it to note book paper at the price rate of 100 sheets for 50 cents, compared to 1 sheet for 50 cents in 12 x 12 or 4 sheets for $1.00 in the 8 x 11 size, in scrapbook paper. If the fear still plagues you, the from now on buy only what says acid free/lignin free for your books. However in my own opinion a LOT of the hype over this issue is started by consultants who can make a LOT of money off of your fears. I too want my precious photos preserved, but I refuse to be baited into the endless game of "our product is better than your product", and if you "REALLY" cared about your photos and loved ones you would spend the X amount of dollars for our items, "Just to be safe", wars that this craft is known for. Sleep safely, whatever you have done your photos are more protected now than they ever were. Penny

I can definitely relate Wendy. I met a 'gardener' in the neighbourhood when I first moved here and was so excited. The first winter I sowed things, she asked for some of the seedlings Angelica Gigas and KMOTGG. I grew them on and gave her nice sized plants. Three weeks later I was at her place and saw them under the deck - DEAD! Since then, I am very picky about those I give seedlings to. She came to my plant sale this weekend and bought some plants then spotted a Brunnera Jack Frost in the gardens and asked for a division. I told her it would be a while before that plant was divided and she could purchase it at a nursery located 2 hours drive away. :O) Yep, I know how you felt, but take solace in that your Asclepias and Lupines went into our gardens this past weekend and are weathering the heat we're having today. They are all little troopers!!

Wow! 100 a day! I can only imagine what that would be like. I might... just might have barely 100 daylilies and about 20 of those are unknowns. Most of mine are still in the double fan or small clump stage since I only started seriously collecting daylilies three years ago. So I don't expect to get a lot of blooms on one clump. My husband noticed all the stakes I had ready to put out for the daylilies I just bought and asked "how many did you buy". I said "13". And his response was "and they are all going to multiply." I think he wonders what I'm going to do in a couple of years when they need dividing! I love your pictures. They have a nice quality look to them. Gauguin would have to be my pick as a favorite. I love that peachy pink color.

Well it died. =[ The tinyyyy spear that was inside of it pulled. Along with two of the fronds at the same time. Almost the entire inside of the palm was rotted out. I lost a lot of my palms this winter, and all I have left right now is a queen palm. Shes holding on strong though. I did read on here that pam cooking spray could be used to get rid of mites in multiple posts when I typed spider mites into the search bar. I thought it sounded crazy too, but it killed them, so I subscribed to the idea. I guess I know to just rinse rinse rinse next time. I'll also improve my soil mix for all my future palms. No more miracle grow for me! I think my other mistake was trying to imitate their environment in the summer too much. I should have been trying to keep them cool and dormant instead of warm and wet with limited light. Sorry it took so long for me to respond. I left this post when it seemed relatively dead, but then I come back and there's 29 responses! hahaha

I agree with mcbird, as he is a partner in this and of course doesn't want to pay for moving and storage! This must be so frustrating! Because our own closing looked so "iffy" this week, the thought crossed my mind to see if we could rent the house we are in an additional week or 2, so that's a thought... even if you had to pay a little extra, the time and stress of moving 2 times would be worth it. This is a good lesson for new home builders to have a set time of completion in their contract with penalties to the builder for time he goes over. We are just too nice to them sometimes and don't think we need tough contracts - but we really do! And finally - in hopes to cheer you up, when I get down I start thanking the good Lord for all I do have. My health, my family and even the money to build a beautiful home. Soon it will all pass. I agree with Penny...acid free scrapbook paper is usually also lignin free and should be safe enough for your photos! Rest easy....or if you can't rest, get up and scrap!
