Need a poem for a pet that has passed away

I'm making a scrapbook about my Rottweiler who died Dec. 27, he was ten years old and he wasn't just a pet, he was a friend and my baby boy---I want a special poem to put in my scrapbook! Any ideas???

I would also like a poem on this subject. I'm so sorry for you, Megan, and completely understand. My "baby" died unexpectedly in January and I'm still not emotionally ready to work on her memorial pages. I am collecting things for them, though, and would like a poem like you have requested. It's so hard to make people understand that they aren't just a dog, they're a child and their absence leaves a big hole in your heart and your life. I still miss my Lida Rose every single day. Oh Darci, its so good to meet someone else who understands! There are still some days I cry my eyes out, I just can't believe I'll never see him again (at least in this life). My heart goes out to you too, and I hope someone can come up with a beautiful poem in honor of our sweet babies!

I was surprised to see this thread come up again. I see why, now. I am so sorry to hear about your Mother, Meriaux. I know it's small comfort at the time, but the thing that helped me get through it was knowing that people have done this before. A lot of us here have been through it. I absolutely understand how you feel, I lost my Mom in 2002. I have no brothers or sisters and not much other family so I understand feeling alone. The fact that you were so close makes it all the harder to go on without her, but you have her memory to guide you. The torch is passed. You know she would want you to do your best. At least you got to know your Mom, and she loved you. Some don't even have that much. I know your Mom would tell you should in NO way feel guilty about your premonition. Premonitions don't cause things to happen, any more than the weather forecast causes it to rain. Death is just a part of life. It will happen to us all one day. Your Mother was close to my age, and I hope you don't think it irreverent to talk about, but if I had to pick a way to go I'd want to go quick. It would be a shock to the survivors, though I guess, with no time to adjust. But it's heart breaking to have to watch a loved one suffer, sometimes for years. Mother's Day wasn't that long ago. Things are still really fresh for you. Trust me, it will ease with time. There have been many words of sympathy and comfort that have been written. I kindof liked this one.I hope y'all don't mind if I include the poem I picked for my Mother's holy card (or whatever they call them these days). (I knew she'd want one for the funeral as that's what she believed in) I chose a more modern picture of a kindly Jesus embracing someone who has just "come home"... Don't think of her as gone away Her journey's just begun Life holds so many facets This earth is only one Just think of her as resting From the sorrows and the tears In a place of warmth and comfort Where there are no days and years Think how she must be wishing That we could know, today Now nothing but our sadness Can really pass away And think of her as living In the hearts of those she touched For nothing loved is ever lost And she is loved so very much. -Anonymous

Well...so far not one person has said that it's best to wait. I'm glad !! Kashka, I guess the "they" I was referring to was...I remembered reading an article a long time ago about losing a pet. And it spoke of what I'd said.....that often people rush in trying to 'replace' the pet they lost and they become disappointed. I didn't necessarily agree, but wondered if anyone else had experienced that. But so far, it sounds like everyone on here had a positive experience. So I say "poo poo" on that article...lol. And as many have said, I would never expect to replace Pinkey. When God made him, He broke the mold. As Ann said, every animal is special. Socks, I was actually giving thought to getting two kitties. I've never owned more than one, except when I took in a stray when I already had an older cat. She didn't like it at all...lol. But two at the same time would be a good thing. They could be buddies. I did at least make one decision for now. I have a terribly junky and messy spare room. It was Pinkey's litterbox room. It is piled with stuff and a lot of it is pretty precarious. Altho Pinkey never hung out in there, for a new cat it would be like a mysterious jungle to explore. And a good place to either hide in or get lost in or possibly even get hurt (falling boxes...lol). So I decided to get my house in order before I introduce a new cat into it. I want to be able to keep tabs on him/her and don't want a lot of places where he/she can hide while getting used to the new home. So getting a new kitty is my new motivation for getting my house straight. I think it's best. It's bad enough having to look under beds and in closets for where a cat can hide, much less having that junk room with it's many hiding places that I cannot reach. Thanks to everyone for all your loving support. And thanks for sharing all your touching stories about your own experiences with loss. It really meant a lot to me and truly helped me. GW is a wonderful community and has been a great source of comfort for me. Never did I know that my love of gardening and need to ask learn about my flowers would lead me to such a loving group of 'friends' :) And when I DO get my new baby, I will surely post a pic on here !! Oh, and thanks to everyone who said how handsome Pinkey was. It made me smile because my best guy friend always called him handsome. And I wanted to add, when I showed him the 2nd pic (him looking back over his shoulder), he remarked on his expression. He was not too happy with me at that moment. Nan, sorry to hear about your loss. My mom died six years ago and nary a day goes by that I don't think about her. I like to think our Moms become our guardian angels and that our relationships with them aren't ended by death, but only changed.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your father. And I understand about wanting to keep his little tree going. Some things to help: First, if you're seeing teeny black flies crawling on the soil, and flying around, they most likely are fungus gnats, as Dave has mentioned. Fungus gnats thrive in too moist soil. So, the very first thing I would recommend is to re-pot your little tree in better draining soil. If you search this forum for "511" or "gritty mix", you'll come up with some good potting soil recipes. Or, if you can find bagged Farfard Professional Potting soils in your area, they also will work. Again, search this forum for "farfard" for the best choices. Citrus do not tolerate soggy soils well at all, and will suffer from root rot, besides promoting pests such as fungus gnats, which can damage tender feeder roots. Next, moisture meters (of this caliber) can be pretty inaccurate. You can try using one, but you're better off just using a stick inserted down to the bottom of your pot. Checking the soil moisture down to the bottom, to make sure you're not retaining a puddle of water at the bottom of the pot. As far as fertilizers, most folks on this list use DynaGro Foliage Pro, and you can supplement with Osmocote Plus, which is a time release fertilizer with a good NPK ratio plus all the micros. The Dynamite Select All Purpose will also work. Use the Foliage Pro with every watering. Skip the Tanglewood - your tree is much too small for that, and really, this product is used in citrus culture to keep ants off of outdoor trees. This will not prevent the types of indoor pests that plaque indoor citrus, including fungus gnats. Put your tree outside as much as you can during the year. Most folks will acclimate their trees to the outside slowly, over a couple of weeks as soon as temps allow. Don't do it too early, as you don't want to end up with the tree exposed to temps below freezing, but citrus are outdoor plants, so as much total outdoor time, the better for the tree. Lastly, to treat the fungus gnats. Use Gnatrol. Works extremely well. You might need a few applications as a soil soak, but that will take care of them. Be sure to treat all your indoor plants, as they will spread from plant to plant. Patty S.

So sorry to here about your pets. I lost my dog of 19 years a few years ago and I still miss her. I made a photo collage (scrapbook style) to hang on the wall. It helped me through it.

My favorite, and on the cover page of my "doggie album" is Fragile Circle, by Irving Townsend:

"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan."

I just read Penny's poem. We lost our cat (with my husband for 16 years and with me for 10) a year ago. We took it very hard, especially my husband. The line about friends not knowing the tears I cried...is like a line written for my husband. I've been wanting to do a scrap collage for him with photos, now with some modifactions...with Penny's permission...this would make a wonderful father's day present for him. Thanks Penny! Karen

Penny and Lindy: your poems were wonderful. Thank you so much - they will make an emotional addition to Lida's pages when I get the courage to work on them.

Megan: I have four other dogs, but without Lida everything just seems wrong. I still cry for her all the time and feel uncomfortable explaining that to people who think of their dog as just that: a dog. Lida was my baby and I miss her every single day. She wasn't even seven years old yet, and because she became ill so quickly I didn't get to say goodbye to her. I think that that there are many of us out there who feel this way, and hearing from someone else has made me feel not quite so alone. Thank you all for your stories, ideas and for letting us know you're out there. **Darci**

When this post first showed up I thought it was very nice but nothing I could use. How wrong I was. My beloved cat passed away very unexpectedly in the middle of the night Saturday. I miss her terribly. She was only 7 and had not been ill. Now when I read it I start crying all over again. I think I will save this for the future when I can bring myself to dedicate a page to her.

Penny your poem was beautiful im sitting here crying now. My buffy died a year ago June 1st he was a cocker spaniel that i had had for 14 years i still miss him daily he was my first baby. I even had to take 3 days off work due to death in the family when he died. He is buried in his favorite blanket and with a headstone on my inlaws property. i put flowers there on his birthday :) he was one of my babies in fact i had him longer than i had had my babies when he died. but there is a site called rainbow bridge that has wonderful pet poems and memorials on it check it out www.rainbowbridge .com
