Okay ladies how about giving us your best journaling tips, you know how to make great looking letters, straight lines, what information you include, etc.? Penny whose handwriting stinks to put in nicely. LOL

I have found that if I try to write neatly, it looks really messy and lopsided. So, to combat this, I intentionally write with my letters off (sloped, zig zagged), this way, it looks like I tried to make it "whimsical" instead of a messy job. This also works well with stickers. They are so hard to attach lined up and spaced perfectly. Good Luck.

I ususally use a ruler and draw a very faint pencil line (I have a tendency to write on an upward slope) and this has helped tremendously!! I just go back after the ink has dried and lightly erase the pencil marks.

I also sometimes only write captions under each photo (especially if it's a page with a title like "cute as a button" or something like that) so I use the edge of the photo as my guide.

For letter stickers, most of mine are slanted every other way (one to the left\ and one to the right/) so I don't have to worry about straight lines. If I do want it to be straight, I use the same pencil line technique above and erase that when I'm done.

I have never been much of a journalist but last year I finally started a gardening/homesteading journal. It's in an ordinary bound composition book and is threatening to turn into a monster as it grows larger and more in-depth. I wish I'd started it three years ago when we first found Dun Hagan as there are some small details of that first year that I've simply forgotten, but the major stuff I managed to get down on paper. My exact style is under steady evolution, but at this point in time I have stuff broken down by general plant types - blackberries, blueberries, citrus, pears, azaleas, camellias, daylillies, etc., and some other general categories like fertilizers and soil amendments, grounds general, equipment and so on. Just recently created a fertilization chart so that I can keep more accurate track of when I fertilized what using what sort of fertilizer without having to go through pages of notes. No more double feeding or skipping one because I misremembered. In the back I have an envelope I keep purchase receipts in, mostly for perennials like fruit plants, ornamentals and so on and important stuff that I may need the receipt for later. It's a nuisance at times to keep up with the thing but I have so much stuff going on now that if I don't start keeping a written record I'll start forgetting important details for sure and then will begin to make stupid mistakes. I make enough of those as it is! It is nice as Meldy_nVA mentions to go back and read old entries when you can't get out to do anything or just don't have the oomph to do it. Pretty soon now I'll begin experimenting with budding and grafting my own trees so keeping written records will be even more important then. Anyone who does more than occasional gardening ought to keep some sort of written records of what they've done. .....Alan.

Man did I ever start something with the Indonesian Peanut Butter Chicken. :) Too funny! Here is my recipe in case anyone wants to try it: INDONESIAN CHICKEN SATE WITH PEANUT SAUCE 2 whole chicken breasts (I usually triple the recipe) 1 clove garlic, crushed 1/2 tsp curry powder 1/2 tsp cumin powder 1/2 tsp chili powder 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsps soy sauce 4 tbsp chicken bouillon broth Mix everything but the chicken breasts in a bowl. Use this as a marinade over the chicken. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours. Remove the chicken from the marinade (reservind the marinade). Bake in oven 350F (I use clay pieces to cook my chicken on - really good results). If on clay, no need to turn. PEANUT SAUCE (If you triple the recipe for the chicken/marinade, then triple the peanut sauce. 2 tbsp vegetable oil 2 shallots (I don't use this) 1 tbsp brown sugar 1/3 cup smooth or crunchy peanut butter 2/3 cup water 3 tbsp whipping cream (I use 2% milk) Pour the reserved marinade in a pan, add the peanut sauce ingredients and thicken. Serve marinade over chicken and rice. I like to saute some nuts. It's good to put sauted peppers on top. It's delicious. At first I was afraid of my own handwriting. But now I see how important it will be for future generations to see it. Let the kids journal also. It looks great!

Sometimes when I have a lot to say, I just type it & print it off of my computer. (on acid free paper) I can match the different types of fonts & color of ink to the subject matter of that page. There are so many styles of fonts that are fun to use, my favorite one for the kids pages is the scribble font.
I then cut it out, sometimes in a special shape using my decorative sissors giving it a fun edging, then put it on a colored backing piece to help it stand out. I seem to have good handwriting days and bad handwriting days,(don't know why!) and this idea helps! Sherry

A journaling genie works great for keeping your handwriting under control. Mine would tend to slope up and to the right if I didn't use one. If you want to journal effectively though, you need to re-learn how to print. ABC's of Creative Lettering has a good chart and there are usually classes at your local SB store.
