question about old 'magnetic ' photo albums

Hi scrapbookers!

I have been married for almost 26 years and needless to say I have many of the old magnetic photo albums. I am in the process of taking them apart and making new scrapbooks(and having lots of fun doing it!). I was wondering what part of the old albums was "bad"? Is it the plastic sheeting that covers the pictures or the tacky cardboard that the plastic adheres to? I have had trouble removing some of my pictures, does anyone have any tips? Also, do the backs of those pictures need to be treated with anything since some of them still have the tacky stuff on them? Also, what do you do about things like newspaper articles(I really want to use the originals) and other things that might not be acid free? Thanks for all your help. I don't post often but enjoy reading! Cindy.
