Help Quick! Textured plaster patches on smooth plaster wall
Comments (3)If it looks BS, sounds like BS and smells like you know what, then it is. Old three-coat over lath plaster is put on in layers, the under layers (rough and scratch coats) can look a little rough, and they are supposed to be so for good adhesion. If your other walls are smooth then you have finish coat plaster on top, which is usually smooth as as silk. Its smoothness comes from the final polishing. My finish coat plaster is so smooth that little silicate (sand) particles in my unpainted bedroom ceiling will sparkle if the light hits them right. Now the contractor who did this, is he a plasterer, or something else? Did he use real plaster or joint compound? Is the plaster (if that's what it is) over lath or is a skim coat over board? And what is the nature of the roughness or texture: ripples, waves, orange peel or more than that? Also, though this may not be so important for modern plaster mixtures, older ones at least, need to cure and be primed before they can take any paint. Has anybody taken that into account? And yes, you can sand plaster; a big mess (lots of dust), but it can be done. Usually the problem is the other way around; in some areas of the country it is apparently customary to have a "knock-down" finish to plaster, in those cases the patch is often too smooth compared to the remaining walls. What was the outcome today? Good Luck! Molly~...See MoreTips for repairing your old plaster walls?
Comments (5)"Is the plaster that I have purchased the same as Easysand?" Easysand and Durabond are USG products. They are setting type joint compound, supplied as a powder and mixed with water. There are some other brands of setting compound out there. The problem with 'patching plaster' (even the USG stuff( is that the final coat is rarely just plaster, but a mixture of plaster and lime putty. Plaster sets way to fast (even with a lot of retarder) and straight lime putty sets way to slow (months). The mixture of the two provides a surface that sets in a few hour and then continues to harden for weeks. Durabond and Easysand both harden by the same chemical reactions as plaster, and not by drying out like premixed drywall mud. If you do not have much experience with plaster repair, stick with Easysand. Mix it about as thick as peanut butter (no limps please) and then apply with either a drywall knife for small repairs, or a plasterer's trowel for large areas (youre areas are small). Do not try to achieve a perfect finish on the first coat, but try to not leave excess material. The second coat will be easier to smooth since it will be thinner. Easysand can be scraped with a drywall knife after it hardens to remove any lines or other marks sticking out, and then another layer applied. You do not need to wait for Easysand to dry before recoating, just harden. Durabond is as hard as real lime putty plaster and very difficult to sand. Sanding also removes the smoothness from tooling with steel....See Moreno studs in my plaster walls?
Comments (16)latest thought is to rough up the plaster with sandpaper and use liquid nails to glue the furring strips to the wall, without screws. liquid nails doesn't dry hard so I would think it would not be great at conducting sound. That, in combination with the Green Glue between the drywall layers, should suffice, if I caulk everything well. Yes some sound will go up through their ceiling and down through mine, and a little bit from below the floor, perhaps, but not much. I'll get short enough screws so they don't go through to the plaster. I'm going to seat the bottom course of drywall in a strip of foam pipe insulation and then cut the excess. That should also take a little weight off the wall....See MoreHanging cabinets on plaster walls
Comments (4)Plaster walls in brick houses usually do have studs, they're just harder to find. You can use molly bolts for the cabinets, screw them into studs, or - if very heavy, French cleats will provide the most support. For tips on finding studs in plaster walls and hanging just about anything, check out "How to hang pictures (and other stuff) on your walls." Article also reviews different types of hangers for different types of walls etc....See Moreinox
