re-roof always w/ drip edge???

I'm getting a new roof. My roofer made it sound like a drip edge was not an automatic deal with getting a new roof, but said it was no big deal..and cheap.

So should a new roof always come with new drip edges? There are a few areas of my fascia that don't have drip edges and I definately want them.

Also, I want the other drip edges replaced with much wider (thicker?) versions... mine drop only an inch from the shingle and they barely meet the edge of the gutter... it just seems that a larger size would be better. right?

Yes! A roofer worth his salt will be applying wide faced drip edge around the entire roof perimeter.

Paula, we have 5 fertilizer treatments per year. But our neighborhood is only 15 years old and almost everyone has a fertilizer treatment service. So, weeds haven't been a problem, for most of the neighborhood (the exception being the house about 300 feet away that's a dandelion farm). Hubby mows cross-directionally once a week. Most importantly, we have an irrigation system. Our lawn became much thicker and healthier when we installed it and it got all the water it needed. Thanks for the replys. Talked with my roofer again today and he said the problem with aluminum is the affect heat and cold have on it. He said sometimes it will stick out two inches in the heat. Temperature can vary from -10Â° F to 103Â° F. The steel product is powder coated and has a 50 year warranty. Also talked with the soffit fascia company, who also do roofing, and they say 99% of there roofs get aluminum drip edge. Please let me know if any of you have any other thoughts or experiences.

There are various shields (mostly either net-type or an overlapping design) sold with the promise to keep leaves and other debris out of the gutters. I have not heard or experienced 100% satisfaction with any of them. OTOH, the dis-satisfaction seems to occur in direct relation to the number and types of trees in the area, lol. I have no personal experience with the overlapping sort, but those who like them love them, and those who don't, don't. Since my area often has truly heavy rains, and a neighbor noticed that really heavy rain had a tendency to shoot *over* his catchment gutter instead of the water curling down into the gutter, I didn't even consider putting the overlap-type on. I do think that they would be okay in areas not prone to tropical storms, but they just aren't quite right for my locale. My experience is with both plastic and aluminum mesh-types, and I prefer the very fine-meshed plastic. My present house is surrounded by pin oaks, maples, pines, hickory and several other types of oak. The first three listed are the prime offenders for producing gutter blockages. Oh yeah, that they are. Anyway, I have the gutters checked once a year (I'm too old for playing on the roof) and since installing the fine mesh covers, have not had any difficulties with leaves, pine needles, maple spinners or other stuff blocking them. The coarse-mesh plastic was not sufficient to stop pine needles, maple spinners, or the oak bloom. The aluminum had mesh that was a bit too coarse and several sections were damaged by branches during one the storms. The fine-mesh has been up for several (8?) years, and has done just fine, apparently just flexing when a branch hits. It's worth saying that even the plastic mesh guards are not cheap, and the cost is in addition to the gutters, so the total can be quite a bill. However, it sure beats being at the top of a 40-foot ladder scooping out gunk every couple weeks all autumn.

Can drip edge be replaced easily?

Had a similar issue and decided to extend the drip edge in the following manner: loosen or remove entire length of gutter (I loosened mine rather than removed so as to aid in the gutter re-install process because this was a one-man job). Cut galvanized or SS flashing (purchased by the foot @ Ace) into manageable lengths 6"x48". Pried drip edge away from fascia w/ wide putty knife and installed flashing between drip edge and fascia. Sandwiched flashing behind existing drip edge and in-front of fascia. Fastened drip edge and flashing to the fascia w/ screws and over-lapping flashing srips the entire length of the fascia board. Re-install gutter w/ screws and w/o any sag while allowing gradual slope to drain. This worked well for me. Hope that helps.

Wouldnt think you get a new drip edge with a roof over, a 2nd layer.
Just had asphalt shingles stripped and redone here and drip edges were replaced, no questions or optionial deal.

When it comes to home improvement companies NEVER assume anything... Ask a lot of questions, point at things and ask if it's included and get EVERYTHING in writing.

Gosh... I had *another* estimate today and *this* guy said that drip edges are not recommended by his company....more suitable for northern climates where the water drips off and sort of "in" from built up snow.

This is not a cheap fly-by-night company and is an Owen's Corning preferred contractor (just like the other one). In fact, this one is the biggest in East Tennessee. These guys both normally charge a bit more than most. He said that they have found too many rotten facia boards hiding under the drip edge in this area.

They seem to use very high quality (not cost cutting) in all of the items I asked about. They use those nails that have actual barb wires which prevent backing out, the Owens Corning "system", and a complete re-do of the chimney flashing. Given how inexpensive drip edge is, it's hard to imagine that he would be so insistent about it.

He says his shingles will hang over about 2" into the gutter.

Hmmmmmmmmm..you better tell him to read the shingle wrapper!

Sounds like he wrote his own spec manual for roofing.

Read the instructions. Read them carefully before you hire him.

Drip edge is recommended by ALL roofing shingle manufacturers and 3/8" is the manufacturers recommended overlap of the shingle over the drip edge. NOT 2"!

Thanks... it looks like I'll insist on a drip edge. Now, I'm going to post a question regarding what he said about the chimney flashing.
