Sliding wall cabinet doors

Many period Victortian kitchens have sliding glass doors. I will have a dish wall cabinet 48" or so wide with brackets underneath. Sliding doors would give about a 24'' opening, which seems wide enough to store most anything. Would I regret not having hinged doors?

My cab will not sit on the counter, but this has the sliding what I want.

Oh shoot! I can't copy and paste the link from Photobucket again. I'll try another computer or browser. In the meantime, any thoughts?

I love the sliding doors...my grandmother had them in her kitchen that was a custom design done in the late 60's early 70's.

I like the look too, so I ended up with a free standing dish hutch that has sliding glass doors and will be for everyday dishes....haven't got to use it yet, but I'm excited to try it out...I believe the clear opening is about 24" on each side.

I had 4 sliding doors on the island base cabinets in a very narrow galley kitchen. Each door was about 2' wide. They did what I needed them to do which was be out of the way when open. The downside (or upside, depending on how you view it) was that they were mostly open when I was prepping a meal. It made things easy and the galley was so narrow that the business side of the island, which looked pretty messy with the doors open, was not visible to the rest of the room. It looks like you have plenty of room for swinging doors and I would not recommend sliders in your kitchen where they would be visible.

Are you building this yourself? Where is your entertainment unit located, the living room? In my experience kids very rarely use desks. Homework and computer time is done at the dining table, islands, in their rooms etc. Before undertaking this project think practically about whether they'll really use it, and forcing them to isn't a long term solution IMO.

An appropriate day to remember your grandmother and her hutch :) It is heartwarming when family and personal memories influence present day life. You will no doubt think of her when you use your hutch. I would love to see your dish hutch. Do you have pictures yet?

The dish hutch pic was from a recent GW post and came just at the perfect moment! I am going to try and put windows over the sink even though the sink will be on an inside hallway wall. We have a clerestory in the middle of the house that will flood the kitchen with natural light.

These last few days finalizing the kitchen plan have been exciting. It has been good to take some time to think through the layout as I am cooking and tweak it just a bit. The idea for sliding doors hit this morning.

I don't have a picture...it's still in boxes in the garage, but here's the link to the piece at JC Penny.

I loved that it had a wood top and wasn't huge. I was very limited on the depth that we could have. Plus the price was right!

My grandma's kitchen was great as she custom designed it herself. Unfortunately, she sold the house about 12 years ago and passed away a few months ago...

Funny how subtle things like her cabinets have stuck with me. She also had this cool pullout in her base cabinets with rods on it in the butler pantry area that she used to hang her tablecloths on.

Your grandma could have been a KF guru. I am sorry you lost her. The hutch is cute and unlike anything I've seen. I hope you get the chance to get it set up soon!

I'm guessing I'll get to set it up in late July...maybe early August. My grandmother was a guru in many things including gardening, journalism, cooking, and computers...quite the role model. Actually both of my grandmothers were guru's...I'm a lucky girl.
