craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener

I need help! We have a 1/2 HP garage door opener that was installed 12/03(Part number 41A4315-7H). When the garage door is in the up position, I have to hold the button on the wall mounted switch down continually to close the door all the way. If I release the switch before the door is closed completely, the door will open back up on its own. Once the door is closed, it was stay closed and open properly with only one push of the button, as its suppose to do. How can I fix the door so that it closes with only one push as well? Do I need to buy a new part or does the motor have to be replaced completely?

Please help!!

Does the light blink on/off when the door reverses and reopens itself? Your symptoms indicate that the sensing eyes at the bottom of the door are blocked or misaligned. Check that the lights on both units are on and that they have a steady glow (no flickering).

Align them so that they are glowing steadily, you may have to look real closely for some flickering, alignment is fairly sensitive.

If it was a sensor problem, why will it go down with no problem when you press and hold the wall mounted switch? You can't override the sensors by holding the switch down, so it can't be the sensors.

Cut your losses and chunk the Craftsman garage door opener. Get a Genie and you will never post a question about openers on this forum again. A little research on this forum will show you hundreds of posts about those badly engineered and cheaply produced monsters. There are probably more questions about them than anything else on this forum. I recommend the Genie "Excelerator". Opens twice as fast, quiet, has two lights, and extremely reliable. chicat2001 - You will find a button (smart/learn) just to the left of where all those white wires go. Press and hold it for 6 seconds. This will erase the memory in the opener and your remote should no longer work. Now press and hold the large button on your remote and then press and immediately release the smart/learn button. Your unit is now reprogrammed. jbenford - Check for a broken spring on your door or remove the cover of the opener and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor.

If tapping on the unit restores function the first thing I would look for is a loose connection. BTW, Chamberlain makes most, if not all, of Craftsman openers.

If there is a problem with the sensors then when the door reverses the light should blink multiple times. Assuming that isn't happening, the next thing to check is if there is excessive force when the door is trying to close. You need to manually operate the door up and own to see if it's smooth. If one spring is pulling more that the other, the door will rack and cause interference/need more force to move. There is a force adjustment on the opener and maybe it's time to increase the downforce a little. Search online and get the manual for your opener before adjusting anyhting. Get the specific model number off of the unit, there are alot of 1/2 hp gdo's that look like the one in your picture. FWIW, Craftsman openers are made by Chamberlain and there is nothing "inferior" about them. One finds a lot of "questions" online for two reasons 1) Sears sold/sells a LOT of them and 2) Sears sells to a lot of do-it-yourselfers.

yes you can. With the door sensors in a fault condition the door will close completely if the button is depressed and held for the full close cycle. Releasing the button before full closure will cause the door to stop and return to fully open

By holding the button down until the door closes, the system assumes that the operator is present and is watching the door and will stop it if it hits something.

My GDO is the model 41A4315-7H and the problem is when it is commanded to open by the remote and by the switch in the box it opns only to midway and closes normally. The sensors leds are green all the time except when it is opening they blink. I loked all around and I found nothing at view. What could be the problem? Thanks in advance

so i dont have the sensors installed and i hold the wall button dwn to close the door. now since i bought a car i want to close it but i dont know how to wire the sensors can anyone help me ? there is a "1" "2'' and "3" numbers on my opener 1 and 2 are wired with the wall switch
