album as wedding gift

Has anybody ever done a pre-made album for somebody as a wedding gift? I mean, all the pages are made, minus pictures, then they insert particular pictures after the wedding is over. I think I'll probably do a 12x12 and I have a pretty fair idea of what pages to include, but I'm not set on it for sure. I'd also include spaces for journaling. Just came up with the idea about two hours ago. Would it be too difficult not having the pictures even taken yet?

The thing is, I should probably give them (ahead of time) a list of pictures to give the photographer to be sure to take at the wedding, but that seems like too much to ask. I know some photographers have packaged deals and any variations cost extra and I sure don't want my gift to cost them money! Maybe I could make the pages flexible enough so I wouldn't have to give them a list? Please give me all suggestions or comments!

The other thing is, I have never even met the bride, but the groom and I have been friends for more than 15 years. I KNOW he's not crafty, but I have no idea if she is or not so I don't know.

Any suggestions? HELP!!! Thanks in advance!

This sounds like a nice idea, but, the only thing I would be concerned with is the limitation you will have with the size of the frames in the book compared to the pictures or the amount of pages in the album compared to the amount of pictures they may want to put in it. Several years ago I bought a pre-made album somewhat antique looking and planned to put old old family pics in it for my Daughter. After assessing the size of the frames, many which would be too small for these pictures, I decided to just put together a Heritage album which I could plan out myself. Unless you can find an album that has decent frame sizes and not a lot of the 2-3in. ovals and one that you can add pages too that might work. Hope this helps you.

Sounds like a great idea, but it might be easier on you and the bride if you gave her instead the album, paper, stickers, die cuts, an assortment of mats that have been pre punched or the corners rounded, in her wedding colors (approx. 3 colors that match) and then let her mount the pictures as she gets them. You could perhaps put the pages in the page protectors with all the items for that page, kinda like power scrapping, when you get pages ready for a crop, and then give it with a idea book for scrapbook making. I don't know whether this is a real post or a come-on from the photographer, and I didn't go to the web site. But the reference to thank you notes caught my attention. Are you ordering stationery with your picture on it? I would skip that. I assume they are expensive, and frankly, I think I would find it a little odd to receive. Would you put your photo on your stationery any other time? Probably not -- it seems a little narcissistic -- so I wouldn't do it for a wedding, either. Maybe especially not for thank you notes; the focus should be on the giver of the gift, not the recipient. Just use regular, nice stationery (not with "thank you" printed on it, either; you're going to write that inside). Save yourselves some money while making it even nicer than if you'd spent more -- how often can you do that?

I think close family members do get asked about gifts so I can understand why you'd be involved :) Weddings are tough - speaking as a gift-giver, I really do think the best gift for a young couple is cash. They will likely (based on my experience) own a lot of their household goods and may be struggling to pay for the wedding (in my circle parents do not pay for weddings). A lot of young couples also don't want a lot of stuff. I now give only cash or perhaps cash and a thoughtful small token such as a craft piece or restaurant gift certificate I think the couple will like. And I understand that gifts are Not to be Mentioned by the couple but let's be real...almost everybody brings a gift. And I'd rather it be a gift the couple wants and can use. None of us want to waste our money on something that will not be used. We set up a registry with the food bank for our wedding and it was a big hit, but we were also getting some help from our parents with the wedding (we paid for most of it ourselves however). I understand the best approach etiquette-wise is still to set up a registry of any sort (household, honeymoon) and close family members will only mention it when asked, or mention cash when asked. I believe most somewhat youngish people that I know around here (40 and under) bring cash to weddings. This may be because a lot of our friends are from cash giving cultures (I have received two wedding invitations that stated No Box Gifts!)

I like Penny's idea but like you said, you don't know if she's crafty or inclined to become crafty, you may want to add a "I would be happy to help you with this project!" coupon. :-)

These gals have great ideas! I liked Crystal's idea of the coupon thing too!

My suggestion would be that the album need not contain photos that the professional photographer takes. That way, you don't need to consult him beforehand or give any kind of list. Just make sure that you and a couple other guests have your own camera and just take lots of snapshots. Then you can give your prints to her and she'll have all the right photos to put in her album.

I'm currently working on my wedding album, and it is all photos that were taken by my aunts and dh's aunt. Lots of stuff; our rings, our cakes, our head table, our harpist, signing the register, walking up and down the aisle, the receiving line etc. You get the idea. Then, if the bride wishes, she can add a studio photo or two just to finish off the album.

If you don't even know her, how can you be sure she will even like this craft? (I know it is hard to believe, but some people don't like the way scrapbooks look! They prefer traditional photo albums!) I would be worried about that. But then, I am kind of pessimistic!

I received an album from a friend and all I had to do was place my photos in it. It was such a creative and thoughtful gift; not to mention a great place to put all the pictures people sent to me after the wedding! There was a variety of pages incl. "getting ready for the big day", "how we met-the dating years"...and just some great pages for pictures I couldn't put in my album the photographer put together. I'm not very crafty,(actually because of this I've started scrapping) but it was easy to see where the pictures needed to go and it included a template so I could trim my photos. She did admit that she did not make the album herself, but the page ideas were all hers! here's the link of the place she got it. Hope this helps...
