I thought it would be interesting to see what items there are at really 'special' prices throughout the country/continent/world.

My local grocery, one third of a mile away, so I can walk or drive there,has canned vegetables 2 for $3, milk for $2.99 a half gallon. Can't recall other prices off-hand, thgough I was just there yesterday.

Well, I'm shocked. I thought if anyone was going to get frost out of this, it would be me, sitting up here almost in KS. Sunday night I covered all that I could and hosed down the trees. Thankfully on Monday morning the temperature gauge in my back yard said 40 and everything looked fine, even the things I didn't remember to cover. I have planted the last of the tomatoes I started from seed last January and a few of the plants I had set out 'way too early have just started to 'come out of it'. So if I lose these, I will have to start over with seed I have left. One of the Black Krims, that was reduced down to just its main stem -- no leaves -- had started making new leaves. I was so happy to see that since I had sold all the Black Krims I had left. My peach, plum and apple trees are full of baby fruit. I, too, am getting just plain annoyed at this stupid weather! I've got stuff to plant! I did notice one interesting thing, though, that I might pass on. I set my tomato plants out two different ways. One row I just dug the hole as deep as I could get it and popped my newspaper potted plant in, watered and covered. Another row I tried digging a trench, laying the plant down in the trench, watered, and covered all but about the top 6" of the plant with earth. It was this group that didn't make it past that first frost. Was it because the trench was not as deep as the hole that I dug for the ones that went in straight up? Was it because there was less of the main stem exposed afterwards to set more leaves? Or was it simply that they were planted in different raised beds, and the trench-planted tomatoes were planted the day after the standing tomatoes were? I'd be interested to know if anyone has tried the trench method and what they thought of it. I only tried it this year because my plants had gotten so big. Monday night was a little warmer than Sunday night had been so I didn't cover anything. I guess I lucked out on this one. I hope this is the end of the frosts, I don't get any fruit off my trees two years out of three and I've really got my heart set on doing some major canning this summer. Now that I've retired, we're living without the income I brought in, and so we've tightened our belts somewhat. Someone once said people would be surprised to know how little money they actually needed to live on, if they did it the right way. I'm having a little trouble with that, but it's coming along. Since I don't work, I hardly use my little Rendezvous and am thinking of selling it. That will reduce our insurance bill. We try to "batch" our trips in order to cut down on our gasoline consumption. And there are a lot of little ways we are trying to reduce our consumption of utilities. I am really counting on a good yield from my garden this year to help out with the grocery bills, and I'll be having another plant sale in a couple of weeks to help defray the cost of the seeds and garden stuff I bought this spring. Nobody has figured out a way to tax us for NOT spending money -- Uncle Sam and the state taxes us on money we earn, then our city and state taxes us on money we spend. But ol' Mother Nature can sure throw a monkey wrench in the best of plans, both with gardens and utility consumption -- oh, and damage costs when she throws her 'temper tantrums'.

Can see each other huh? Hmm. Close the shades? Or can you see Russia from your house too?? Oops, I got OT... Much depends on the situation. Although I shop different stores at different times I do different things. First, I do not do the Cost/'sClub places. No way will I pay $50/year to not shop there. Nope. I got suckered into that for a while and was given membership as a gift and finally said no more - won't go there. Too expensive and too time consuming for me. I sometimes will just pick it up if I'm in a place. For instance if I'm in a gas station and need a loaf of bread - I'll buy it there. Maybe it's a little more but saves a trip. Around here we don't have a lot of choice on markets. There's basically 2 big names and a few small ones. The one small one that I really liked, Festival, was bought out by SuperValu and things have deteriorated. It was a more upscale place but had a great meat market and for general things, yes a little more expensive but I liked patronizing a small chain and again, convenience. Not a giant store. But now it's part of the conglomerate so I don't go there often. Then there's the other mid-sized, Lund's and Byerly's which one bought the other. They're a very upscale place and the one catered more to a select clientele and their prices were never cheap but quality was good. But I don't have one nearby so it doesn't really matter. Then the one place I'd like to shop more is Thriftway but it's just not convenient. They're a place that's been around a long long time, family owned and they have some decent specials. They cater to the neighborhood and I wish them well. Wish they were in my neighborhood. The chain that I really miss is Country Club Markets. They were a small grocery store with good prices but the employees decided to play games and they shot themselves in the foot, so they're long gone. I had one nice and close and it was great. (heavy sigh) I will take the ads if I need things and look them over and make a list for the two big stores (Cub and Rainbow) and then compare. If it's only a few cents difference there's no sense making 2 stops. I like Rainbow's meat department where Cub's is now pretty much only prepackaged, however Cub generally is cheaper on the dry goods unless a special. Plus Cub now has an interesting dollar area with some bargains there for $1 - aluminum foil, body wash, spices, chips, etc. I'm finding myself finding more and more at Aldi though. I like the place. Problem is you never know what you can get there. They have it one time doesn't mean they'll have it next time. But the prices are unreal by comparison. I've been tracking them and most of the time if they have it, it's substantially cheaper but of course, not always. Target is converting all small stores to P-fresh so they have more groceries and they're very competitive on a lot of things too. But again it'd require multiple stops to take advantage of everything so I have to be in the mood and feeling up to it. This time of year there's a lot of deals to be had so it might require multiple stops. Plus it depends on how I feel. If I'm real stiff and sore I want little time in a store.

I make cakes too -- these were fun to see. But about storage: Yes, I'm doing something very much like you. My boxes are plastic and have lids to keep out dust. I have boxes for the following in my pantry: - Cake decorating items -- this is just decorating tips, bags, etc; I got rid of all my "character pans" because they took up too much space, and I keep my sets of nested pans in a big plastic box in the attic - Cookies and cupcakes (cookie cutters, holiday sprinkles, cupcake corers, etc.) -- cake holders and cupcake holders sit on the shelf next to the boxes. - Cheese making accoutrements - Canning items - Paper plates, napkins, etc. bought on clearance for next year - Beer brewing materials When we move, I want to start larger boxes for each holiday, and they'll store in the walk-in attic space. My husband is BIG into his Big Green Egg grill, and he has quite the collection of grilling accoutrements; however, he has an outdoor "shelf" for storing them, and it's not really adequate -- but we don't have space here. One of our kitchen-priorities in our new place is carving out enough space for his grilling gear.

I tried to "budget" for certain things decades ago but found it really wasn't practical. Even being single I would buy, for instance, a case of toilet paper and paper towels when Target had them on sale. At the time it was much cheaper. I discovered quickly that keeping track of your spending would let you build a price book and LEARN what are good prices. Saving 10¢ on an item you buy once a year isn't significant, especially if you have to waste time/mileage to go get it. I know what's a good price and use that as a guide when shopping. When a local butcher shop has their meat sales, and things are a good price, especially for their superior quality, I'll stock up a bit. That would blow a budget. But then it would save for a while after which more than makes up for it. I'd suggest a price book or at least learn prices on things you buy frequently. Beware that the "club" stores do NOT mean the best prices. "Sales" do not mean the best prices. I shop clearance things frequently. That has the potential to be a savings but isn't always the best either. Stores like Aldi can save quite a bit, again, you need to know your prices. Even non-conventional places, DIY stores, dollar stores, can give some savings if you know your prices. Setting up the price book, logging receipts and looking at sale flyers and comparing them showed me that knowledge is power in saving money. Coupons? I don't use them very often. Too much time, too much effort and not worth the hassle. I'm not very brand-loyal on most things. THAT in itself will result in a big saving.

My prices at the stores are similar to chemocurl. I live in Wisconsin. However many stores have baking products really cheap right now and i am stocking up. Woodmans has all brands of baking chips dirt cheap. I use Ghiradella for most of my chocalate needs. It is usually priced at $3 but is on sale for $1.49 a bag. The Heath toffee bits are the same price. My pantry is stocked. Sentry has Gold Medal flour for 98cents. I only buy name brand flour. I learned the hard way that it does make a big difference.

I forgot to add they had the Kraft Mac and cheese (the regular ones...not the fancy cheesy shell) 2/$1.
I usually just buy the store brands of those...usually about 50 cents everyday low price.

I haven't found any difference in any of the many store brand/off brand flours. What is the difference? I always buy/use all purpose. I don't want to find out the hard way.

I always buy all-purpose flour, any brand is fine. I just don't bother with special flours like cake flour or whole wheat.

When i was first married i use to buy my flour from Aldi. For some reason my cookies were flat. Everytime i made them they came out flat(really flat). My girlfriend kept insisting it was the flour. I didnt believe her and i kept buying new baking soda/powder. Still flat! So i finally gave in and bought a name brand flour. She was right. My baked good always turn out great now. When flour goes on sale it is cheaper then Aldi anyways.

My brother had a bad experience with Aldi (I don't know the details,something he bought was old and spoiled) and now refuses to shop there.

I just posted at the KT about making pumpkin pies with Aldi canned pumpkin. The pies taste funky...like maybe the pumpkin was not ripe yet, or possibly over ripe...not sure.

In reading the one last can of pumpkin I have from them, and several other Aldi probucts, I see they have a Double Quality Guarantee. It says:

I just bought a can of pumpkin from Aldi. I plan on making bread with it. A while back i bought milk that didnt last to the expiration date. They replaced it with no questions asked and no reciept needed. I think i'll taste the pumpkin before i bake with it.

Ground beef around here is relatively expensive, but usually pretty good quality. Ground Angus $1.99, Ground chuck $1.89, and often ground beef for around $1.89-$1.99 is the going "sale" prices.

Minnesota here. And we don't have a lot of competition in the grocery market. The average person has essentially two options, Cub and Rainbow. I do have a Festival which is close by but they are higher priced. There's also Lund's/Byerly's (now same merged) but they're the yuppie/upscale and high-buck places. I sure miss the days of Country Club, Kroger, IGA, Applebaum's, National and the like. There was competition then.

Aldi is growing in the area. I like it, but it's not a place you can get everything you need. They have great meat. Also have a pork sausage patty that is terrific. Bag salad is cheap. Don't care for their canned soups and the other thing is that the items vary often. So if you find something you like, don't bet on it being there in two weeks. But that's the nature of the store.

Yes, Aldi has a really good everyday low price on their bagged lettuce, and often much of their produce. I'll have to give their meat a try.

Oh yeah, I forgot, Betty Crocker cake mixes were 69Â¢ too. Canned frosting for 99Â¢ plus I had coupons for 50Â¢ off. Can't make it from scratch for that. Plus I like to make a sweet bread from cake mix. So I stocked up.

Chase & Sanborn coffee has been on sale & rebate often over the last year or two also. At first it was, I think, 99Â¢ for the "big" can, later $1.99, then $2.99, after rebate. I used to like C&S but didn't like it this time and I had bought like 4 cans so I donated them to a non-profit that I like. They really appreciated it. And I wanted to do something for them anyway. Frugal help is help nonetheless!

Aldi's has great ground beef and when I was there last they had beautiful chuck roasts. 3"+ thick! I didn't get one but sure wanted to. Wouldn't have time to cook it and not enough room in the freezer for it. I really enjoy a good slow cooked pot roast with browned potatoes.

I buy lots of sale items now. Having a freezer means I can store many products for a month or more, and cans/jars/dried things keep for a long time.
