military scrap book

My son is in the army and I've started a scrapbook for him. Anyone have any ideas? He's an MP.

Since my brother is a police officer too, I have looked for and found some police stickers from a couple of different places, I have also done pages of my daughter's father who was in the Navy, with American flag themes, patches from his uniform, pictures of his base, etc. I know they make camoflauge (sp) paper that would be cute to use. Good luck and please share with me any other ideas you have had. Penny

Stupid question here....but ummmmm...does the Navy mean like submarines??? I have some CM Design Lines (The 12" long sticker strips) with subs on it. I also have one in the Army motif..with a strip in the camoflauge pattern, a jeep, and a tent I think...anyone need one??

It was a great time, it was the first time for the class and it went longer than the 4 hours. Should be a day class with breaks and lunch. I learned so much, things like using the paint and the distressing pads. I've been a very simple with my pages doing matting and some embellishments. Plain and simple. I learned to use ribbon, staples, brads, and flowers. I love the pages I did now I just need to add pictures, which is something else I learned I always picked pictures then did the pages. Nancy

Actually, Nebgranny, you can make it all acid-free and archival! If you'll check your local office supply store, there are several brands of multi-use copy paper that's acid-free; that would mean your labor of love will last for your grandchildren as well. As far as organizing goes, chronological order makes the most sense to me; I've seen it done other ways, though--like by subject(i.e., all school stuff together, all holiday pics together, extracurricular stuff,etc.). A friend who's doing something similar came to the conclusion that it's best, especially with certificates and clippings, to use a fair representation but not every single piece. Another thing to remember is to include as many of your memories, in the form of journaling, as possible--that's what will make it really personal, a unique love-offering :) Good luck, and happy scrapping!

One of the first albums I did was when my son decided to join the Navy -- it starts with his physical and the letter sent to us "welcoming" us to the US Navy Family! I have his high school graduation (he signed up in Jan of his senior year), graduation party, going away (VERY sad page!) pictures in front of the house .... then boot camp graduation, our trip to visit him in Orlando, his first trip home (Christmas)our trip to Power School graduation in Orlando ... leave, his house in NY and graduation from Nuclear School. That filled one album ... now I am continuing with things he brought back from overseas(Bahrain, Tasmania, Australia, Hawaii) and current pictures of his life stationed in Washington... I used a lot of Navy blue cardstock! Also a lot of the navy paper with the small white stars .... At first he wasn't too impressed when I showed it to him but now he is saving things for me to add to the album!!!

One thing my son saved for me was the pin to a grenade! I don't have a natural talent for this and I find myself sitting for hours pondering what paper to use, which pictures, how to cut them, if at all etc. I guess I should break down and buy a few books. I watch a scrap booking program on PBS on Saturday's and just marvel at all the great ideas they have. One thing in particular that I wonder about is what to do with all the pictures. Looks like most pages have only 2 or 3 pictures on them. I have lots of pictures of the Bosnian countryside, but let's face it, after 5 or 6 pictures of green hills, they all start looking alike. Thanks for the info - keep it coming.

Hi Barbara! My fiance, Thomas, is infantry with the United States Marine Corps. I'm *always* looking for military SB page ideas. I hope more people respond to your post with suggestions. I don't have an entire album devoted to his military career but I do have a few pages. I've linked them below so you can view them.

There are more samples of military layouts on Dmarie.com (they are categorized for you). I find a lot of military patterned paper a little too "cartoon-like" for my tastes so I use a lot of neutral coloured cardstock (i.e. various browns and muted greens). However, Paper Pizzazz (Hot off the Press) puts out a book of military patterned papers. A friend of mine gets various military logos/images from bumper stickers (etc.) she gets at the PX (safely buffered away from her photos of course). I have a BUNCH of military poetry I've gathered from the net (most of it is husband/wife themed but they might inspire you still) -- if you or anyone else is interested, email me at leahtommy@hotmail.com and I'll be happy to share them. That's all I can think of for now.
