If your soil is very alkaline, I'd steer clear of acid lovers. It is very difficult to effect any substantial change in soil pH and what you can do will only be temporary unless you repeat the process regularly. If your soil tests higher than 8.0, I'd restrict growing acid lovers to containers, where soil conditions can be more easily manipulated. If your soil is less alkaline than 8.0, you can probably achieve a sufficient level of slight acidity to accomodate quite a few acid lovers, but don't expect to lower it dramatically. Once most organic matter begins to decompose, it becomes pretty neutral in pH so while it does have a buffering effect and is a great amendment, it is not going to make alkaline soil more acidic to any significant degree. Peat is the exception. The agricultural sulfur mentioned above can help as well, as can cottonseed meal, which has natural acidic properties. Hollytone is organically based but not entirely organic. It is also a slow acting fertilizer. Miracid, being soluble, is fast acting and is often recommended for a quick anti-chlorosis fix for iron deficiencies in acid-lovers in less than ideally acidic soil conditions. It's your choice - both will help to slightly acidify the soil.

For pH, i use a pH test kit, with drops of pH sensitive dye. Cost about $10, more then accurate enough for what I need, and I don't have to worry about replacing pen tips. I set up my pH at the beginning, and put in an air bubbler to agitate, mix the pH Down in, and also clean out some of the chlorine thats in the water. Then put it in my system and forget about it. I've checked it after two weeks. It crept up a bit, but was still acceptable (just below 7). So now I don't worry about it.

At "home", growing up it was the left front burner for proximity to the counter and sink - right side of stove was against the refrigerator (hated that setup). And usually the right side burners were covered with pots and pans for storage. Had a small kitchen with 2 small cupboards in it. First apartment I started with the right front, since there was nothing to the left of the stove and the second apartment was reversed but I cooked on whatever. In the house I've used the right front primarily, front left is the second burner used and the back burners used for warming or when I needed additional burners only. Now the new stove has different sized burners but still is front right the larger, as is the rear left and the front left and rear right are small burners. But I use what I need and cook. This isn't like a gas stove that needs to match the pan size so much. My cookware distributes heat well and the 3 qt saucepan covers the larger burner fairly well too so I don't obsess over it. And the Nesco, convection oven, oven or microwave might also be in use so it's whatever gets the job done for me.

Let me start with know nothing about your area. As a retired appraiser this is how I would start an appraisal assignment with a 1.5 story home. Ideally I would find 3 homes in the subject's development that are 1.5 stories, within 100 sq.ft. of finished space and completed within 3-5 years of each other. They would be on similar sized lots with the same number of baths and in similar condition. Chances are I won't find this set up. I will use as many of these 1.5 homes as I can find. Then, I'm will search for ranch houses on a basement with all of the other features listed above. They both have below or almost below grade areas. If I can't find enough 1.5 story homes or a ranch homes on basement in the immediate area, I will start to look farther afield. I will begin to look at changing the other features. I will try to find at least three of these or maybe four, depending on what I find. Once I find these three or four very similar 1.5 story homes or ranch homes on a basement, I will start to adjust for the differences. When I have made adjustments for the differences, I will be able to make a determination of valuation. You do try to use similar styles or types of residential property. It's not entirely necessary, but it makes my job so much easier when I can find similar types close by. Often, I will have to go farther afield to find these types of properties and that means crossing school boundaries into other neighborhoods across town or the county. I have never specifically adjusted for schools or school districts. I don't have enough comparable sales data on the specific market comparison to be able to generate an accurate adjustment metric. The good news for me is the sales prices of the comparable properties have a way accounting for that difference. I leave that direct comparison alone. I usually do not cross county boundaries, either. It takes a very unusual property for me to use two different counties. I will go across town without a second thought, but I had better be able to justify somewhere in my report why I left the immediate area. I hope this helps you to understand that 1.5 story home is often compared to a ranch on basement.
