I don't dare ask what kind of eggs... or whose?

Eggs around here are over $2.00 in the stores - and I've asked the manager how fresh they are, as the print on the carton usually says, "fresh".

He can't give me any kind of definitive statement as to how long ago those eggs exited the hen. But they've travelled quite a distance, since ... as does milk, between cow and glass.

And the A & P store have their oft-repeated slogan over the past few years, "We're fresh obsessed".

Sometimes I can get a bit of a giggle in a check-out line if I comment, "Yeah - if I get fresh - you'll probably get obsessed".

When I buy from a local farmer, the eggs are often so large that it's hard to close a carton that calls its contents, "Large". And the lady chages me $1.75.

We used to be able to buy, when travelling that way, from a distant farmer 5 miles from a town for $1.50 ... but they shut him down - not zoned for commercial stuff: just agricultural.

As for the other kind of eggs - they can't sell them, can they?

And they didn't used to be able to sell sperm, either - but some med students appreciated the "Donation".

Sixty years ago, when I was in Univ,., we used to sell blood sometimes - $15.00 per time, I think (which was major money for a Univ. kid, in those days). Later they made it voluntary.

I was a blood donor for years, but a few years ago they told me that there was something in my blood which made it ineligible for donation ... but I was to become ineligible, at age 70, soon, at that time. I think that now they accept donations from people over 70 who are in good health.

I'm not sure if Canada dates the eggs but you can tell from that. Here, the expiration date is 60 days. So just backtrack and you'll have an idea how fresh they are. Often there's also a date code on there for the day of the year but best and quickest way to get an idea is the above.

I'm surprised about them banning a farmer from selling eggs! Here, that's considered ancillary to a farming operation.

FWIW, I haven't bought eggs for a long time now but last I heard they were close to $2/doz around here too. And now that the Canuckbuck is equivalent to or even greater than (can you imagine that!!) the UsBuck, we're more comparable. Not sure the reason for eggs being so high. I didn't think the bridge collapsing, or Katrina crushed all the egg operations!!

I do enjoy getting farm fresh eggs, the big ones, and occasionally a double yolker! And I grew up with an interest in the brown eggs which became unfashionable but now they're yuppie-approved so they're expensive to get... And yes, I know they taste the same and are the same nutritionally. Just a novelty that I happen to appreciate.

And this time of year I am hoping to do some baking. Haven't done that for a long time so I'll need eggs. Usually this time of year they go on sale though, if I can time it right, but I seldom do.

Forgot to add, when I was in Canada YEARS ago... we couldn't even buy eggs. Had to pick up a dozen "oeufs"! Not sure what a dozen is in Canadian, though. :)

A dozen in Canada works out to about 12. Whether "oeufs" or "eggs" ... and where did you hear that in Manitoba, St. Boniface, suburb of Winnipeg?

In the store this evening a dozen Grade A large were $2.29, and if you wanted brown ... $2.69. That's outside of shell - that gets discarded ... I'm pretty sure that inside, they not only all looked alike, but were identical nutritionally, as well.

ok -- small chicken farmer here. So you want to sell eggs and you want to make money????

An inexpensive pullet (female chicken prior to laying her first egg) is approx $2.50. You will feed, water and care for them for approx 5 monthes before the first egg appears.

If you buy 25 pullets (minimum order thru US hatcheries) -- you will spend roughly $40 per month for feed. So in 5 monthes -- you have spent $262.50 -- and not made a dime.

Once they start laying -- you will get approx 20 per day -- 11 doz per week. At $2.00 doz -- my current price -- you will make $22 a week. Of course, you have to buy new egg cartons to be legal -- they run approx 35 cents a peice with shipping.

And that doesn't count set-up charges -- feeders, waterers, water heaters (at $60 a piece) for cold climates, electricity for lights (need 14 hrs of light per day to lay)
coop construction costs, costs due to predator loss, straw or bedding. Yea ..... I forgot checking eggs twice to three times a day in the heat of the summer and the cold of winter. And cleaning the coop 2-3 times a year and manure disposal.

I love the hens and the wonderful fresh eggs -- but if you think you can make money with a very small operation -- you are wrong. I can get them to pay for themseves but with 25-50 hens -- they don't lay enough eggs to really make money. And if you sell brown or green eggs -- you are going to pay more per pullet. Some of my pullets are $4-5 each.

Maybe she just likes chickens and doesn't know what to do with the eggs. ;) My vet sells the eggs from his chickens (free range organic) for $3.50 a dozen.

When I read the title I had assumed that the poster wanted to sell eggs to a fertility clinic. Fertility clinics will pay thousands of dollars for eggs from the right donor.

BUT, (there is always a 'but') you have to go through a rigorous regime of invasive proceedures and subject yourself to hormone and steroid injections. A lot of women get real sick from this and there is evidence that the egg donor proceedure can cause future fertility problems in the donor and possible organ damage to the liver and other organs.

I would not consider being an egg donor as a way to make some extra cash to pay bills. It is a proceedure that one may choose to do to help a couple suffering from infertility, usually a close relative or good friend, and using a specialist with a lot of experience.

Sure there are ads in the papers, and on the internet, looking for egg donors, but do consider the risks. These fertility clinics that pop up in cities may not give a hoot about your health and well being. The long term consequences of subjecting oneself to being an egg donor are not fully known or fully revealed to the donor.

LOL bud_wi, I checked right away on this one. Seemed strange to me. Which is why I didn't take it too seriously. But it did raise some interesting conversation.

Anytime I see someone talking about a "miracle" product or something, first thing I do is check the profile. Amazing how that works out and seldom hear back from them!

Joyful, I don't recall where we were when we saw that. Could have been there, it's been so long I don't remember. But we went from there to Banff, Jasper and down through Glacier Nat. Pk and back home. Nice big circle. Did it a couple times. Great trip. Would like to do it again. Also, we didn't realize at first that the beer stores are different than liquor stores. Here, beer and booze are combined. Went to one and it looked so strange to see Pabst and Miller under "imported" beers. Of course they were, just seemed strange. Things are so similar, yet so different. And we were both impressed how courteous, overall, drivers were in Canada. If you pull up behind someone, they'd pull onto the shoulder to let you go by. Didn't have to change lanes to pass and risk a head-on with someone coming from the opposite direction. Plus the main roads were built that the shoulders were essentially another lane.

I know, I'm getting off-topic. So let's egg-stract something from this, shall we? :)

Grade A large were just 88 cents this week on sale. I don't/won't usually buy them unless they are on sale, as I seldom really need them with so many other things in the frig, pantry, and freezer. Frequently they are even less than that when on sale. I've seen then at 59 cents not so very long ago.

New posters, who are wise enough to withhold personal information from a public world forum, might have something to say worth hearing. Why not welcome them and learn from them? If you are rude, they just go back to lurking and we learn nothing from them. Their information could be very valuable.

Anyone who has been here and read even a few of the threads knows well that new contributors are always welcome to join the fun and encouraged to share ideas, ask questions and not feel embarrassed. They're also encouraged to not take life too seriously.

However, anyone who has been here and read even a few of the threads should also know that the ones who sign up to spam the forums will not be tolerated. We all know the nicknames for them and there are several.

It's certainly easy to clarify whether you're here with legitimate purposes in mind or with illegitimate purposes in mind. In the past, Glenda would simply say, "Are you a GOOD witch, or a BAD witch?" :)

I too think that spammers are usually pretty easy to spot and I don't tolerate them well andlike to poke fun at their posts.

Well then these wise owls should say something valuable in their first post, not just post "Dear FORUMERS!" and "I want to sell eggs!" (I guess the exclamation points were added by the poster to show the urgency of the issue.)

How are any of us going to know anything about selling eggs in the Ukraine?

After reading the first post I really expected another *brand new first time poster* to "just happen" to have a link to a fertility clinic who is looking to buy eggs - one of those *Make Big Money Now* types of links.

That is how spammers will try to work it. Post a question looking for something, and then a new person, just registered, happens to have the answer and a link to a website. I see it all the time in the Beauty and Make-up Forum. Someone new has a "problem" with their hair or skin, or are looking for shoes or underwear to solve their fashion "problem". Suddenly someone new appears with a website selling THE SOLUTION.

Us *Forumers* await.

I stand corrected. Since I don't buy or sell online, I did not have that point of view. It just seemed to me that some people were not well received in the past on many forums. I guess maybe there was a reason.

A very large percentage of the spammers list living in a foreign country. While where one lives is not a for sure 'sign' it is often a clue.

Bud is right above. They often work with a 'shill'...that is the same person probably, just registered under a different name.

A shill is an associate of a person selling goods or services or a political group, who pretends no association to the seller/group and assumes the air of an enthusiastic customer. The intention of the shill is, using crowd psychology, to encourage others unaware of the set-up to purchase said goods or services or support the political group's ideological claims. Yeah I was surprised when I learned that too. I had always thought a 'con' always meant a 'convict', as in "He is an ex-con from La Tuna Fed." But con = confidence artist.

The pattern on most discussion boards, is that 99.999% of the time anyone who is newly registered and posts on their first day, with a poor command of English grammar, they are a shill, a con, or a troll. Unfortuately the .001% who do not fall into those later catagories get shut out. I do not think that is the case in this thread. Us *FORUMERS* are not so dumb.

What I usually see is that the legitimate ones will come back and provide more info, clarify or something. The hit & run ones are usually scammers. And I usually will give the benefit of the doubt and wait a day or two for a clarification if it's legit. But when they won't, I say it's open season!

I also thought she wanted to sell her own eggs, but considering this is a money saving forum, chickens make more sense. If I were younger, I might think about selling eggs. ;)

I am assuming that you mean to sell eggs to a fertility clinic. I hope that no one would consider doing this to make money. The going rate is $3,000-10,000. The everlasting damage to your body is irrepairable. No amount of money is worth it.

Did anyone figure that Miranda, who I figured was wanting to sell hen eggs to us ...
