Has anyone ever heard of Professor Nel Noddings, and if so, what do you think of her educational philosophies???

Gardenboy, I should have known that you would find that particular article!:) :) I just completed a paper on her educational philosophy, and I have to say that I think she is one smart lady!! I am reading one of her books also. The main theme of her educational philosophy is "CARING." I found her to have such realistic and often simplistic views of what our classrooms should be to better our children's educational experiences. We can teach with a CARING theme in every academic subject. Professor Noddings also believes that schools have failed at keeping up with the changes in society, by not addressing vital issues that effect children of all ages everyday. Example, poverty. Even if a child isn't living in poverty, learning to care about others and to respect one another as capeable human beings can be transferred into classroom learning. So can ethnic differences, religious beliefs, gender roles and inequities, cultural differences....the list goes on!! I hope that you, and anyone else who looks her up or knows of her likes what they find! I will post some links tomorrow as I don't have my list here with me with the info. I need! :)

Love this thread!!! I keep nodding my head at some of the things (yogurt cups all over the place, full of seeds and tiny ripped-off corners of paper for labels, making another flower bed simply cuz' you don't have room for all the seedlings, etc). You know you have a problem when you read this post and say to yourself "I'm not as bad as some of the people here". Then you realize you are worse and were only trying to delude yourself before. LOL. Classic case of addict denial! I have to say, reading the posts here makes me feel a little less guilty about my seed snatchin' and WHERE I have ended up snatchin' from. :-) You feel so pleased when you convert your own father into a fellow seed snatcher! One day he came up to me with a happy/sneaky look on his face and pulled a seedpod (a simple marigold) out of his pocket that he snagged from a store. Next he gives me a tiny NOID sprig of a shrub that he pulled up from in front of some mall in town ;-D Then one day I give him a tin of herbal drops I no longer want and ask him to save the tin. I didn't even have to tell him what I wanted it for- he said it for me "for seeds!" I think I have found my kinfolk here in all of you. Great post! ;-) CMK

ah yes, Suesette, the Aussies have been erecting their inflated barbecues for the last few years, usually involving massive amounts of timber or stone and an absolutely gigantic cooking area. I know the 'barbie' has become something of an Aussie icon but really..... A shame, as I had hopes that the international aspect of Chelsea would be really rewarding. Sadly, the astounding sums of money involved has restricted any really interesting concepts of design and gardening unless it is a pastiche of native styles, conducted by some TV 'face'. Every so often, there will be a standout garden - a few years ago, I remember a spanish garden called 'Patio Povera' - a really witty and unusual take on recycling and found objects and there was a concerted effort to at least give a nod towards water scarcity, climate change and sustainability. However, the last few years, it is business as usual with almost a brazenly decadent theme of opulence and money (last years diamond garden was a nadir, imo). Bread and circuses! Well, I am arming myself for a summer of unwanted spectacle with the Olympics, the European cup, the bloody Jubilee - I predict my allotment will hit an all-time high as I will be spending a LOT of time there.

I love this blog on the Christmas tree debate. Well, I will be 80 this September and I never put up a Christmas tree last year because my beloved Westie passed away around last Thanksgiving, then this year there was a family issue which has not been resolved and also lost our beloved Scottie; therefore, I feel like Christmas has never really happened yet. I have a beautiful tree in my dining room with children's vintage toys under it and a beautiful flocked tree, more formal, in my living room, both decorated with 60 years of collectible beautiful ornaments. I don't light them unless for a special occasion, but they give me inner peace, comfort, and helps me de-stress. I know that some people think this is strange, but I remember reading when Carrie Fisher passed away, she always had a tree up year round. At my age, I think everyone should do what makes them happy!

We learn by doing. For example, when you are a passenger, you rarely remember the entire route well enough to return on your own, but if you do the driving yourself, then you can easily return to that spot. When DD was a baby, she learned textures by touching and squishing many foods as she ate. It was more than playtime, it was a science experiment in a way. *I* know what a banana feels like when squished, but a baby doesn't, and you have to let them learn somehow. And there is always the old, tried and true, English teacher method. "You don't know how to spell it? Then go find a dictionary and look it up.." No matter you didn't know, just by "doing" it, you'll figure it out on your own, and be more likely to commit it to memory. So my contribution is, We learn by doing.

I appreciate you sharing your findings and letting me know about this lady. Please continue doing what you are doing. I just have a love for children and people helping others. I really appreciate good teachers and good parents.
