Describe the page you like best in your book.

I have not made that many pages yet, so this is probably easier for me, than for those of you who have done tons of albums. I think the best page I have done so far is one of my son, at a bike race, it has 3 pictures. One of him waiting in line before the race, one of a distance shot with a group of riders during the race, and another of him standing next to a much taller guy that he has to race. They called my son "Adam Ant" because he could beat kids much bigger than him, so next to the photo of him and the other rider I wrote next to the other rider" I hate Ants" and then next to my son I wrote "I am much taller in person.", since he was so short, and then decorated it with a bike and ant die cut, with the paper matching his uniform. I did some other journaling that described some of the race, but I think it got really cute. What's yours?

I love all my pages, but my husband's favorite page is a four-page panoramic spread I did about the boat he restored last summer and then promptly wrecked. It is on dark green paper, and the focal-point photo on each page is matted in green gingham. I edged all the mats and photos with an edger that sort of looks like cogs. I also embellished with tool stickers. The journaling is done on light green paper and the edges are torn, to add texture and interest. I showed the step-by-step progress of the boat as it was being restored. Then on the fourth page, I wrote "The Sad Saga of Big Green," which is the story of the restoration and wreck of the ship, set to the tune of the theme from "Gilligan's Island." (The boat was nicknamed Big Green because it was painted hunter green,BTW). I typed it out and printed it in green ink on white paper, and trimmed the edges with the same cog edgers, and mounted it on dark green cardstock. He loves the spread and shows it to everyone. lol

Hmmm..what a great question! I have several favourites..but I think that my all time favourite one, isn't even a creative one to look at. It just has one small picture of my oldest son, as a baby, being held by our elderly next door neighbours. The ENTIRE page is journaling!! I tell my son the story of Jack and Hazel..how they met, and about their life together. I tell him about how they would take him out in their garden on sunny days and he would come home, little lips stained red from all the strawberries and raspberries he had eaten. I tell him how much Jack and Hazel loved him, and the story of Jack's illness and stroke, and how my son would go over and sit on Jack's bed and "talk" with him..I tell him how I think the two of them had a language only their hearts could hear. I tell my son, of when Jack became an Angel, and I try as only a mom can do, to explain about heaven...hmmmmm...never really thought of this as my favourite page, but when the question was asked, it was the first page I thought of!! My ds, is now nine and still loves to read that page.

Outside, I enjoy those books too--- my late FIL went to school with Ferrol Sams and we love his novels. I hadn't realized he wrote essays as well. "When attending art shows, I swear off coffee table books but I am weak." We share that weakness, lol. Seems I am "always" never going to buy another huge book... Beagles, that room is fantastic, and I do see your pile of books peeking out from under that chair to the left :-) I'm with you on the kindle, but every now and then I like to hold a real book. Even though I find myself pushing the edge of the page instead of turning it (hanging head). No screen can reproduce the heft and color of those prints in large books, there is something about a good quality art print that is somehow more convincing than an image on a screen. Sloe gin, over the past decade or so I've seen many people putting lovely shelving in their dining rooms to combine functions or simply bring books into a room that doesn't often see them. I love that look, of a literary dining room! And your basket sounds eminently practical, we use our shagreen boxes and ceramic bowls for the same purpose--- the "stuff" has got to be corralled somehow. I have seen that Circus book, Robo, and the Atomic Ranch book also, they are both marvelous! It's clear that our collective enjoyment of these tomes is at least partly for the esthetic quality of the books themselves in addition to the content. I suppose that's what makes them "useful" decor :-) In some cases they might function purely as decor, as the leather books you've used, tinam. Have you seen the book purses that are so popular in some circles? Kate Spade has or had a few, and there's quite a cottage industry on Etsy making real old books into small handbags. They aren't a tenth big enough for me, but I love looking at them!

My dh hardly ever looks at mine. I think he just never thinks of it. When I do show it to my dd (2 1/2), she loves it, but doesn't want me tobother reading any of my journaling to her. Which really stinks because I journal a LOT. Im sure she'll appreciate that part when she's older. :) I guess I don't show mine around enough. My mom seems pretty unimpressed with the whole thing (I think she thinks this is just another passing fad that I'll get bored with) so doesn't comment much besides the normal "oh that's really nice. Do I have to read everthing?" I hate it when she says that. GRrrr.

Thank you all for sharing! So many of you have mentioned excellent books that I had not mentioned. The Historian, for example. Others, like Kristin Lavransdatter, I still want to read, have gone through the trouble to buy, and look at them every now and again as they wait patiently on my shelf. Frieda, I have read Collapse and found it hard to put down. That book formed the basis for many side books into the societies mentioned therein. I have Guns, Germs, and Steel; see note in above paragraph re: books waiting patiently. As for 1491, I KNOW I read it. I remember bits of it, but cannot find it listed in my book journal. I have searched back to 2001 and found nothing. This is odd as I find a perverse sort of satisfaction logging a book into my journal. I also read Tony Horwitz's A Voyage Long and Strange (only 445 pages)which covers a bit of the same ground, but I do not believe I am confusing the two books. annpan, your post made my laugh. You've been robbed! Love it! I recently read the new Elizabeth George book. Most of her Lynley titles are doorstops. But I cannot truly put any of them on a "fan club" list. They were okay, some better than others, but nothing I truly remember, nothing that was thought-provoking. And this last one felt choppy, disconnected, and just plain "off". PAM

I'm so glad you're enjoying that, Jasdip! I started to read it when it first came out, and had been billed as sci fi, was appalled in a feminist way with the opening bits, and when it turned out to be Scotland, I threw the book across the room. I've actually enjoyed the TV show, which is ridiculous in the plotting (but no more so than other romantic adventures) but fun, and a feast for the eyes. I admit, there might have been worth in the books past those opening bits, but I just can't go there. I also threw a John Grisham novel across the room. It was from later in his career, so I assume it was suffering from I'm-too-famous-to-be-edited-itis. The only book I regret not finishing is The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead. I read most of it when it first came out, loved it, but real life made me put it down for awhile, and I would have had to start over to finish it. I should put it on my list. Many authors don't know how to end, and there comes a point where they run out of steam 2/3 of the way through. I feel no compunction abandoning them when I feel they’ve abandoned me! But I had wanted to finish The Intuitionist, and really should. @Neely, so sorry! I forgot about the play. That may be the inspiration for the title. The Resistance book is by Sonia Purnell, an Englishwoman of merit. Full title: A Woman of no Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II. I do belong to a group of readers, and every so often we do all read the same thing, but more often we discuss what we're reading, ourselves, or have a general theme where we all choose our own books. Sometimes, it’s more like book reports than a discussion group, but the books are interesting, because people like what they're reading, and when we all read the same book, it's usually something old and seminal, so likely to be enjoyed by all. Usually, people will also be reading up about the authors, related materials, Interpretations in other media, etc., rather than a single book. It's very different from the standard book club format. Re food in novelss, generally, I’m not too impressed. Nero Wolfe was a character who was both gourmet and gourmand, and discussed food a lot. A paperback edition of the books awhile back included afterwords with recipes, I think also by Rex Stout (the author). One of them, which has stuck with me for many years is scrambled eggs. His recommendation: cook on very low heat, and as edges form, worry them, until the eggs are cooked. I've always thought that must lead to phenomenal eggs, but I've never had the urge to try it. ;D Today, I probably don’t have time, but I just got a beautiful cabbage. I read or saw something about braising it with salty things between the leaves. I want to try that.

Mar, what a wonderful touching story. I am sure that is a page your son will cherish always.
I don't really have a favorite page that I have done. I do, however, have a few from when I first started scrapping, that are not my favs :-)

My favorite is of my darling little grandmother. It's a double page, and on the left is a poem I wrote about her (in caligraphy)with some beautiful Victorian flowers and a feather...the other page is a large oval picture of her, framed in Victorian flowers. Wish I could show it...mostly in various shades of pink, her favorite color.

in the album that I made for my son (now 21) a page with all of his school pictures starting with kindergarten and going to his junior year of high school -- on the opposite page is his graduation picture and announcement.... the "tear jerker" is the poem about watching a little boy starting school and it ends with him graduating! The poem is in the center of the first page with all of the school pictures going around it showing how he grew and changed over the years.... still tear up when I read it!!!
If anyone has a similar poem for girls, please let me know... I have two daughters that are waiting for their albums to be completed!!!!

This is an easy question for me. I have only worked on one book so far but it is huge. I surprised my husband with a trip to Hawaii...without any of the four kids..*L* Anyway since I had never seen teh ocean we took lots and lots of pictures. My very favorite of all is a two page spread..we spent a lot of time on buses taking tours..so I used a green for the back ground page and with white I actually cut out the shape of a bus that we rode on all day. I cut out windows and put pictures there on some of sites we saw on tour. I was even crazy enough that while I was there I took a picture of my hugging the hilarious bus driver so that picture is postitioned on the door. I used colored acid free markers to decorate the bus just like in the pictures. I have to admit it turned out just awesome and very colorful!

Mar, what a wonderful story for your son to read about your neighbors!! And Pam, what a touching story of your dad. Wow.

Great question on the page. Hmmmm. I think my favorite so far is a double page spread I did of a week we stayed at a beach house in RI. The left side is pics of the house and the beach section it was on. The right side is our day trip to Block Island, RI (my daughters first boat ride). There's nothing spectacular about the page, but I really liked the colors - bright blue and yellow. I used the CM dolphin die cut and he's "jumping" over one of the pictures. I think it's just the color combo that I liked so much. The pictures didn't even come out all that great! :)
