white roof coating over black rubber

What could I use? My kitchen has a flat roof with black rubber on it. I think if I can put a white coating on it, it will surely make it cooler. At least not so hot?

Be sure that any coating applied to "black rubber" roofing does not contain any petroleum-derived substances. The black is typically EPDM which is damaged by petroleum products.
I have no idea how well coatings will, or will not, bond to EPDM.

Thanks for all the great tips, everyone. My kitchen space is probably too small to carry off a black & white floor. Although, I do love the retro look. Another inspiration kitchen is oldhouse1's...I love the colors and this goes with my original intent of some kind of wood flooring. The yellow is BM's Windham Cream. I'd love to know what she used for the cabs. My dining & living area is adjacent so I'm wondering what colors would look good transitioning into the living area. How do you separate the colors?

New roof late summer due to storm damage. In Beverly's examples the original was Sky, chose Slate for new. Her pic is darn close to the brochure/shingle colors. The Slate made a huge difference in the look, which was unexpected. It just looks like a higher priced shingle and makes the house look larger. The house looks similar to the one with window awnings. I have white shingle siding with black shutters too. Everyone around was doing their roofs, so it was easy to take drives and see how they looked. My area is a mix of houses in every size, shape and design possible. A lot of cottage styles. Perhaps a personal take, but the lighter and darker roofs seen didn't give me a comfort level. Not sure what it was about them. The roofer I had actually helped decide. Am wondering if location, terrain, trees,ect. make a difference on what is chosen. A roof color is difficult to decide on.

At this point,"constructive ideas on what product/steps to use" is probably going to be "the least worst steps to take". You might not find much satisfaction in this but your $2K mistake pale's in comparison to many who come here looking for answers. The best solution may very well require tearing it off and starting from scratch but it's worth farther discussion before deciding. It will help us to know exactly what kind of metal was there before,how long it was there,how well it served as outdoor living space,what made you believe it was reaching end of it's life and most important,what type decking is beneath this rubber. I realize we are asking a lot of questions and haven't answered yours yet but that's to avoid turning this into a larger problem than it is already.

Trebruchet, do they install or only sell? There are two companies listed in Iowa who have the material. I will email both of them. Can you make a guess as to cost for a roughly 12x24 roof? I recently got sticker shock for spray foaming my well pit, 3 walls 4x4x5 tall! Apparently, getting here was most of the cost. Most of the time living in the wilderness is fine until I need something I can't buy at Menard's and haul in my Ranger.
