Scholarships or grants..Do any of you know where to go to check these out? My grandson will need financial aid to go to the school of his choice in the fall. Just looking, trying to help him out with this..

It getting kinda late for this fall. The first thing you need to do before anything else is fill out a FAFSA if he hasn't already done so. That can be done online if you do a search there. It will also give you some links I think.

Sallie Mae,is one place to get loans. You can probably check that out online also. try www.parentanswer.com/senior These are loans based on school choice and your credit rating...not income based.

Try www.fastweb.com. You can type in all your information, and it matches you to existing scholarships and e-mails the info to you. When I worked for a college, we suggested this site to all incoming students. It's free.

Yes it is a necro'd thread but it is a great thread... Since it is back up... there really is not a two year employment history requirement. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac set the general requirements for mortgages in the U.S. There has never been a requirement for two years of employment history. Two years of employment history is the most common way to establish income stability and has become the default, but there are some automatic exceptions to the two year employment history... (1) military service, (2) returning to the workforce after an extended absence - this allows separated periods to be counted as a single period, (3) attending any college or trade program. In addition to those three automatic exceptions, a lender may use any reasonable exception to demonstrate that two years of employment history is not necessary or the applicant has other means to demonstrate employment stability. Although not an automatic exception, employment contracts are always accepted as a demonstration of income stability (even if they are only for a single year). The only employment history requirement for a mortgage is that income from fluctuating hourly work must have 12 months of work history. ---- Having said this, a particular bank may set stricter requirements, but you can certainly find a bank that counts two years of college as an exception to work history in every region in the U.S.

UofI has many different plant/gardening related degree programs so you are not too limited in what direction you could go. I'd consider an early appt before the school year starts with an academic adviser who can help you tailor the classes to your needs.

My very overused gift idea for those I don't know well is a yeti cup with a gift card. Not all that creative but always received well. When my BFF's son graduated, I did a larger yeti water bottle, a travel/sketch journal and this set of caramels in addition to his monetary gift. He was going on a cross country roadtrip/adventure so it was fitting. For my own family, I usually try to give money and gifts to prepare them for the professional lives and living on their own. Since none of that is needed for your son, @mtnrdredux_gw, I might go with something like.. An experience: a sailing trip, flying lessons (do i remember he's already done this?), a mountain trek (I especially like the symbolism of scaling a peak) A special "piece" : art, good quality telescope, antique something related to his profession. (When my nephew graduated, I got him a vintage WWII map with handwritten field notes-- he selected it but we shopped for it together so it was both an experience hitting the antique stores and a gift for him to treasure/hang). Regarding Apple watches-- they are definitely worn by men here. Of course many of the men in my circle are techies so that may have something to do with it. My nephew and BILs wear non-apple watches and more as jewelry (their phones are their timekeepers).

Yes, fill out the FAFSA and also to save some extra money. Try using http://www.koofers.com to buy your textbooks. They have a search engine that will help you find the cheapest books that you will need. Its really a great tool for college students

Also, look for college level training programs where a student can earn his way. Typically, the student does not attend full time, but is allowed time out to earn the cash to support his effort. For example, the year might be divided into 3 parts, 2 semesters and a summer session. The student attends full time during one session and works full time alternate sessions. During the work session, he takes a couple of courses during late hour or at night. He may find that he needs to borrow money only for the last semester so that he can put two semesters together to finish his last year. A normal 4 year college program can be completed in 6 years. Its a lot of hard work, but it can be done and one emerges with a degree plus work experience.
