Scholarships or grants..Do any of you know where to go to check these out? My grandson will need financial aid to go to the school of his choice in the fall. Just looking, trying to help him out with this..

It getting kinda late for this fall. The first thing you need to do before anything else is fill out a FAFSA if he hasn't already done so. That can be done online if you do a search there. It will also give you some links I think.

Sallie Mae,is one place to get loans. You can probably check that out online also. try www.parentanswer.com/senior These are loans based on school choice and your credit rating...not income based.

Try www.fastweb.com. You can type in all your information, and it matches you to existing scholarships and e-mails the info to you. When I worked for a college, we suggested this site to all incoming students. It's free.

My 2 cents…instead of the entire room’s focus being on a tv/fireplace, suggest a more congenial/interactive set up. It also feels heavy at one end of room and the long wall will need some visual weight. I think it’s also wise to allow for more space behind stools. Therefore, suggest using two smaller scaled couches (if interested, items below are from Ikea), a table/light between the two, and large square coffee table. Wall decor also has a big influence in creating balance/interest. In bedroom, he may get more and better flow with bed under window. If he wants to take advantage of the room next to kitchen, make it a dual purpose space.

How are the community colleges in your area?

I looked at stats for two local community colleges in my economically diverse area but one with many people of above average wealth too. I didn't pick and choose, below I present what I was able to find. These colleges used to include more useful stats on their websites but as the information is (in my opinion) pretty dismal, they don't so much any more At one, in a very nice neighborhood (West Valley College in Saratoga) 8000 gross enrolled, 6422 full time equivalent students Median age - 20 years Transfer out - 642 Total degrees or program completions awarded (included Associate degrees for those transferring out - about 2000. San Jose City College - in a lower socio-economic area but still with some affluent areas nearby Student population - 8400 Transfer out rate - 8% Graduation rate - 25% What in the heck are the enrollees whose ultimate outcomes don't increment these stats doing with themselves and in their lives? Data like this, pretty consistent from college to college in my area, and info I've heard from those with inside experience, leads me to think that our system is broken. I think too many young people find their way to community colleges as a way to postpone transition to the responsible adult stage of life. Perhaps a lack of more robust vocational training is partly to blame? Lax or absent parental guidance? I don't know. Many, who do wind up transferring to 4 year schools of less renown, like the CSU system, populate classes as unmotivated students of limited ability as our close friend reported at the end of her full career.

Off to college…what to do with the extra room?

My main goal is to have access to the backyard by putting in a sliding patio door, but I’m not sure if having the twin bed there would be too crowded? Why would there be a twin bed there? I thought you were turning this into an office or a TV room. Where do you watch TV now? What space do you currently use as an office and do you work from home? Can you just make a little sketch of your layout and post it here? I just wonder if this room is located in an area of the house that will actually make you use the backyard more or not. What is outside this room in the back yard?

Yes, fill out the FAFSA and also to save some extra money. Try using http://www.koofers.com to buy your textbooks. They have a search engine that will help you find the cheapest books that you will need. Its really a great tool for college students

Also, look for college level training programs where a student can earn his way. Typically, the student does not attend full time, but is allowed time out to earn the cash to support his effort. For example, the year might be divided into 3 parts, 2 semesters and a summer session. The student attends full time during one session and works full time alternate sessions. During the work session, he takes a couple of courses during late hour or at night. He may find that he needs to borrow money only for the last semester so that he can put two semesters together to finish his last year. A normal 4 year college program can be completed in 6 years. Its a lot of hard work, but it can be done and one emerges with a degree plus work experience.
