vaccinations

We are planning to start school for my 3rd and 4th graders soon. They have not been vaccinated for medical reasons and I am wondering how this is handled by the schools. We currently live out of the US and I just sign a waiver with the school nurse every year.

It may vary by state but in the places where I've lived you just sign a waiver as well. If there is a case of one of the illnesses for which the children are not vaccinated they will have to stay home from school for awhile.

For specifics you should contact the school district where you are planning to move.

Yay! Glad you are getting the second shot. And always good to be prepared for feeling a little down a day or two after a vaccine if you can. After a strong response to the first, my second was nothing unusual (little arm soreness? I remember the first -- not the second. LOL). I hope you have the same. I strongly encourage anyone who has reservations about a second shot to get it. My feeling is that if you had a strong reaction, you are EXACTLY who benefits most from and may need the vaccine, including the second dose, the most. If you still had a strong immunity to the virus and were likely to hold the virus at bay over the years, it doesn't seem your body would have such a strong response. Seeing my husband's pain for months and my cousin worrying about her husband possibly going blind was enough for me. I'll get a third shot if they ever decide it is needed....

The health dept. told me there were two pharmacies offering Shingrix in my community, CVS and one other regional chain one. My doctor is on haitus all month and I'm still debating on jumping ship. Either way, it will be at least a month before I can get any services from a personal physician. I still haven't heard back from my insurance company about coverage of the Shingrix, but I'll extrapolate from hubs experience with Aetna supplemental and project that it will be expensive for the vaccine and minimal if any coverage by my insurance company. I don't think my coverage will be better than his. But I have to find out for sure before I can maybe pursue some special program through our health department. But I'll bet that too will be minimal support. They need our money and have us over a barrel, so there you have it.

Because Rabies is transmittable to people the vaccination schedule is usually dictated by state and local law. Some states only require that dogs be vaccinated, most require dogs, cats and ferrets to be vaccinated. The law for each state is summarized here: https://www.avma.org/sites/default/files/2021-08/State-Rabies-Vaccination-Laws-Chart.pdf If your state requires vaccination for cats, the vet really does not have the authority to over-ride state mandates. Again, different states have different rules and some allow use of either one or 3 year rabies vaccines, some only allow 3 year vaccines to be used. For cats there is an additional risk factor that many cat owners don't know about - injection site sarcomas. https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/pet-owners/petcare/vaccines-and-sarcomas-concern-cat-owners Because of the risk of injection site sarcomas, at this point in time I would only use the recombinant, adjuvant free vaccines developed by Merial - bought out by Boehringer Ingelheim and sold under the name PureVax. The original PureVax was a one year vaccine, but they have a 3 year formula available now. It is an expensive vaccine and may not be available through every veterinary hospital (they have to buy 25 at a time, and may not sell enough to warrant the expense). If my vet used anything other than PureVax I would want it to be a 3 year vaccine and would only allow administration in the tail. (Can be amputated if a sarcoma develops).

When a needle hurts when it penetrates the skin, that's avoidable and is the fault of the person on the other end of the syringe. It has nothing to do with the medicine being administered. Everyone should know what happens when alcohol is put on a skin opening. Yes, it burns. Your skin gets swabbed with alcohol to clean it before the injection. If the dummy performing the injection or venipuncture doesn't wait until the alcohol evaporates - it takes just a minute or two- then the needle gets coasted by the wet alcohol as it passes through the skin and the alcohol is taken under the skin. Where it ...... causes a burning sensation. It's not the medicine because that remains in the syringe until the pushing stops and the plunger is pushed down. Some medicine can cause a burning senation but not when the needle breaks the skin. People who are paying attention to what they're doing and not thinking about their weekend plans when hitting a patient with a needle know to wait until the alcohol dries. My uncle taught me this years ago. Uncle Sam, when I was in the Army and at medical corpsman school.

Please vaccinate your children. Legimate medical reasons to avoid vaccination are rare, perhaps things have changed or another doctor may have another opinion. Failure to vaccinate your children not only puts them at risk, but other children as well. When individuals truely cannot be vaccinated (immunodefiency, severe allergy) or do not respond to vaccination with an adequate immune response (unknown) they are dependent on 'herd immunity' to avoid serious illness. The diseases against which vaccination is recommended are a real threat and do occur. Below is a link to an American Academy of Pediatrics page discussing immunization.

Thanks for the information on how children who are not vaccinated are dealt with by the schools. Now I am more informed about what American schools do in this case.
To Only Myself: Since it is impossible to email you privately, I will limit my response to you by saying that I did not intend to open a debate about vaccinating and I said the reasons were medical. If you read my post, why flame me?

I was amazed to learn from my SIL that, although school systems will attempt to tell you that vaccinations are mandatory, they, in fact, are not. His sister, who believes in feeding her family only organic foods, uses no cleaning agents in her home, etc., etc., etc., refuses to allow her children to be vaccinated. And the school system can't do a thing about it.
