Cropping Questions...

If I have a picture in PSP and want to crop it into an oval shape...I can use "preset shapes" to get an oval where I want it. But..what do I do next to crop the picture in that shape? I hope I've stated this so that it can be understood. I want to crop a picture into a circle or oval shapes...

Yes, use the selection tool set to the shape you want then goto Image/crop to selection.

Sorry misread part of your question, I don't think you can use the preset shapes to crop with, but you can use the selection tool.

Sorry it's taken so long for someone to respond. Maybe no one knows. I for sure don't but here are a couple of guesses. She does need grit to digest. Put some parakeet gravel in her food. I use that when I have baby chicks off the ground and confined when very young. Also. I find that a bird/chicken/duck often is effected with some lameness when fed too high a protein diet.... The yogurt, eggs and such are very high protein.... try canned veg. green beans, some corn, carrots , pinto beans etc. soft, and low protein. When my ducks come down with lameness from getting sweet feed from the horses, I confine them and give them shredded carrots until the recover. Sounds like Abbey does want to make it. Is it possible to put her next to her true love or maybe with him. He might encourage her. Also, don't know if your are inclined but this time of the year I'm often found in the mater patch picking off mater worms for my chickens. They are fools for the ugly things. Just mention that because insects,worms are a natural diet and Abbey may benefit from bugs. Now I see Abbey's mom fliting around the yard with a net looking for some bugs for Abbey? Abbey is a lucky chick/girl.

Kimmsr, The purpose of this was to add organic matter and N to the soil from the peas/clover. I was told I could get a second cutting off the clover but I don't want to wait that long because I'm afraid the roots of the clover getting to woody and tough making it harder to till into the soil. So, grinding it now makes sense to me. I believe I will follow your advice and plant another pea crop. You lectured me some time ago about not letting my horse manure age before putting it down...I now have a pile of 8 month old manure that I'll incorporate into this new pea crop. I'm finding it hard to change my ways being taught by wheat farmers that use nothing but NH3 and other chemical fertilizers in their fields. I believe organic garlic will be better.

Annual Ryegrass is not a good cover crop because it can become a "weed", but if there was sufficient moisture it should have germinated by now. Annual Ryegrass is a winter grass generally seeded in the fall, although some sources indicate it should be seeded a month or more before a frost. If your weather has been as moderate as mine that should not be a factor.

Which of the several cover crops to use may be determined by what is available to you most easily and at the least cost, as well as the season you plan to grow them. At this time of year a cover crop needs to be winter hardy and that would include many of the clovers (annual clovers preferably) and Winter, Field, or Cereal Rye. I use Winter Rye because I find that locally and relatively inexpensive at around $0.45 per pound. How much to spread depends on the area and the size of the seed, but Winter Rye is recommended to be applied at about 2 to 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet. In the spring you can mow the top growth or as I do just walk over the plot and break the plant stems at ground level, which stops top growth, and leave those stems laying on the soil, as part of a mulch. The roots of many cover crops are much more extensive than the top growth and do provide as much, or more, organic matter to the soil as the top growth.

If you want the picture to be saved as an oval afterwards, then you have to have your oval on a transparent background, and then export as a GIF file to keep the transparency. This process may or may not affect the quality of the image itself. You have to play with the settings while exporting.

Okay..I'm off the try the selection tool...

What good is the preset shapes if you can't crop something to that shape?

Well, you can, really---after you draw your preset shape, just use your magic wand tool outside the shape, invert the selection, then crop to selection.

Maybee, the preset shapes are good for other things--adding backgrounds to your photo, decorative shapes to a scrapbook page, using as conversation balloons for your photos just to mention a few--:)

I have a picture and I was able to do the oval, but the background wasn't transparent...can I change that? In other words...if you have a picture that doesn't have a transparent background, can you "put" it on one?

There's a couple of ways to do that--the easy way is to copy your image, open AS, paste as new animation and then replace color with transparency--unfortunately that will remove all of the replaced color, even in your image. The other way is to stay in PSP, use your free-hand selection tool (the lasso) and outline your image; invert your selection and delete. You may find that you like the image better if you modify your selection by feathering it 1 or 2 pixels. Oh, yes, make sure your image is a raster layer rather than a "background" layer.
