Wetbar in Enclosed Patio

Tom Ray

We have an enclosed patio (1973 vintage) that we are fixing up, updating and even upgrading. Thr update is transforming the kitchen, family room and patio (which adjoin each other in a cluster) into a more urban/contemporary look.

One upgrade is adding a wetbar. We installed plumbing (through the common wall with the overlooking kitchen) and a 20 amp electrical circuit to the patio as part of the kitchen remodel. And, I have some design questions.

How do you keep from over-improving the space? For example:

- Is laminate countertop more appropriate than quartz/granite for this wetbar?

- Is a freestanding compact fridge (@ $200) more appropriate than a built-in undercounter one (@ $1500-3200)

What elements make more sense for an uban/contemprary wetbar out on an enclosed patio?

- backslpash?

- mirrors in the back of bar cabinets (and/or open shelves)?

- lighting (accent, task and mood)?

- rail or floating shelves?

- lighted shelves?

- glass shelves?

Would open shelves be better although dust will settle on things (stemware, liquor bottles, etc.)? Or cabinets eventhough critters will want to nest in them?

Thanks for your help!
