'Find a Note' The latest TV scam?

Am I seeing things? I couldn't sleep this morning and turned on the cable.

My opinion is the following:

The commercial goes somewhat like.........

Notes can be found everywhere! You buy notes and resell them? Another words you buy money and resell it for a higher rate?

The deal is the advertisers SELL you a 3 step package that shows YOU how to go about it. They stay clean themselves!

IMO, stay away from this like the bird flu! This is a great money saving tip!

Most all of it sounds like the following to me:

I'm so amazingly rich! I do nothing for it, I make nothing, sell nothing, in fact I just sit on my amazingly rich arse as this perfect money making scheme runs itself and throws thousands upon thousands of dollars in to my ballooning bank account!

PS: despite having endless supplies of money and free time to do nice things with it, I thought I would go to great lengths and expense to sell you the concept for $20.

Actually, I have some ideas that I'll send you for whatever you think that they may be worth, then you can pass them on to others, same deal.

If you figure that they ain't worth much, you won't stay on the bandwagon long, same for the folks that you (nasty word - "recruit").

But if you decide to stay, you'll end up with more dollars, that work harder.

And, if you're a Canadian resident, maybe my ideas might help you plus your supporters, save some taxes along the way - over the last 3 years I've reduced my income tax load from just over 10% of income to, while I enjoyed a modest increase, about 8.75%: paid within $25. of the same number of dollars over the past 3 - 4 years.

Not a bunch of fancy ideas, or any get-rich-quick stuff, mostly common sense.

By the way - which would you prefer: saving a Dollar of costs while enjoying pretty well the same lifestyle, or getting a Dollar increased income?

Are you in 25% income tax bracket? If so, you need $1.33 extra income to equal $1.00 lowered cost of goods that you'll pay for using after-tax income.

Just thought you might like to know: but you knew that already - I was just calling your attention to the fact.

Best wishes for making your dollars work most effectively - for you, not the guys who sing those beautiful, memorable advertising songs on TV to get you to move your money out of your pocket ... and into theirs.

P.S. If you are Canadian, do you know how you can make about $30,000. year (single, non-senior) and pay nary a cent of income tax?

There are, of course, a couple of provisos: ya gotta be rich, and ya can't work.

Well, if you feel morally obligated to work, to pay your way in society, that's O.K. - but don't take any pay for it. (If you have employment income, that idea will still benefit you - but you won't avoid income tax liability entirely).

There are two ways to make (or lose) money in real estate - equity and cashflow. Equity in this market won't just happen on its own in most market, you have to buy VERY low, and probably have to put some elbow grease in. These shows, I watch them and see these tight profit margins that are tight even if everything goes perfectly (making 10% on a %900,000 house in L.A., come on, one false move and you lose 200 grand!) and you haven't even paid the realtor yet! You have to buy at a pretty steep discount, generally 30% or more (which means foreclosures and distressed properties for the most part unless you get lucky), and whatever you estimate as the repair cost, double it. Cash flow from renting the house out is different...but also requires either a BIG down payment or again, a steep discount. Take whatever you can realistically rent that house for, and multiply by 55%. If the principal plus interest of your proposed mortgage payment is over that number, YOU WILL LOSE MONEY.

I guess I will be the only positive post in this thread. ;) DH and I have a DirectBuy membership, although when we got it it cost around $2000 if I recall correctly. We were students at the time and have since gotten married (invitations and accessories came from DB) and bought a house. We also got our full set of appliances + big upright freezer for excellent prices. It's also a good place to get some gift items - like the Royal Doulton set we got for my MIL. Can't forget our big tv and entertainment set also. One of the good things is that they have a lot of different manufacturers to choose from with an endless selection. I can be indecisive so sometimes all the selection is a bad thing however. ;) Some items the deals are not that great on - for example certain electronics items. Others are more than 50% off (like that Royal Doulton stuff). Overall I think we have gotten our money's worth. It's also nice not to have to wait for sales, we can just buy whenever. Delivery times can be up to 6-8 weeks depending on where the item is coming from (I'm in Canada). However we got our appliances 3-4 days after ordering (was supposed to be 6-8 wks also) so I guess it depends on what the manufacturer has in the warehouse. Oh, one more thing they have at our local store - gas, grocery, and restaurant gift cards which you get at a discount (handy, since it's stuff I'd buy anyway, and very nice with the price of gas!). I can totally see how folks who are not planning to buy many "big ticket" items would lose money on this. Also, I was not a fan of the hard sales pitch, yuck! But overall it's not nearly as bad as the other posts made it seem IMO.

I've actually had a similar idea to yours cynic, but with a slight change that might actually make the solution workable. Whenever a call is received, the recipient has the option of hanging up and dialing similar to *69 (I'll call it *96) which would cause some amount (say 50 cents) to be added to the callers bill, and that amount would be credited to the recipient's bill. Think about it. You've just got a call from 'Bridget at card services" or from "Microsoft" or from some annoying survey or from the opposing political party regarding their reprehensible candidate, and rather than merely hanging up and walking away silently fuming (like I did moments ago in the middle of writing this message) Instead imagine hanging up, dialing *96 and walking away slightly smirking because you've actually affected the annoying caller, and your phone bill will be slightly smaller this month. Imagine the smile when you think, "Five more of them, and this month is free!" The details of the plan would need some careful thought to avoid creating a new mode of abuse wherein some scammer calls you leaving a message saying "Its an emergency, call me back at this number ASAP" and then when you do, they *96 you and garner 50 cents from you. Maybe each caller gets a handful of *96 calls in a given month before they are debited. Or perhaps the caller is notified that the recipient has done a *96, and the caller has the option of dialing *97 and negating the charge back, but only a couple of times a month. It would take decision at the Federal level to force the phone companies to implement this, since I'm sure they'll fight it tooth and nail. Furthermore the telemarketing industry will surely claim it would affect their business, and jobs of all the poor schlubs they employ, but ... duh, that's the entire point of the measure. The one issue I see with the measure is that it would be so effective, that perhaps within a year of being implemented, the need for it and the use of it would drop to near zero. (Note if a lawmaker reads this and wants to implement this scheme, I'll gladly license the design for a meager 1/100th of a cent per call that is *96'ed :-)

I watched my elderly MIL decline mentally over a period of about 25 years. Prior to her retirement as a director of human resources for a US manufacturing company, she was smart and capable. But age took its toll on her mind. The signs of cognitive decline are quite subtle, and the person can go for years concealing their illness. That's what she did - she was an excellent liar - and unfortunately, for many years she was essentially living a financial lie. Credit card companies will give you more and more credit as long as you pay the minimum on your bill, which she did. One scam she got caught up in was a phone service. She believed that she had purchased insurance for her telephone lines. If there were any problem, this company that she paid monthly would repair the lines in and outside the house. In reality, she paid $7 or $8 per month for years to rent a cheap phone the company had sent her, besides paying her normal bill to the phone company. My ex-husband had a hell of a time getting her out of this "contract" because they wanted "their" phone back. There were others: someone claiming to represent the local fire department that she gave money to, yearly insurance on jewelry, and I'm sure many others that we never found out about. To believe that everyone should be smart and savvy and able to see through scams just means to me that you have led a narrow life.
