It looks terrific. I'm amazed that you were able to do such a nice job with the stain. I keep hearing that re-staining doesn't work well, but whatever you did to prep, it worked.

The kitchen looks much richer and more elegant. Congratulations!

My master bath used to be 4'x8'. I demo'd two bathrooms that were back to back and stole 1.5' from the other to make it 5.5'x8'. >I would like to know from others who renovated a small master bathroom from an older home if you were able to "find" space and make it appear bigger, gain space by using small vanities, etc. Our toilet is in a bump out so that the door--on one of the short ends--can open. This was original to the house. Now, it's just a shallower bump-out, 1' instead of 1.5'. We're using the full depth of that 1' for a wall cabinet, which will be 48" tall x 28" wide. This gives us a place for the humidifier, my box 'o Ace bandages/splints/etc, the cleaning bucket, and all the linens for that bath. Our medicine cabinet will be recessed. It back up to another medicine cab, which must have a light above, so it has sconces. There is a 10.5" gap between the door frame and the wall. We found a 10" deep cab that we're filling back there. Our vanity is actually a full 36". Part of it is 21" deep, and part is 18". We found a brand that looks nice but packs a huge amount of storage into the space. To put in the wall cab, we had to replace the toe-kick heater with a towel warmer, due to space constraints. Our colors will help open the space. The 66" tub will have frameless sliding doors. The walls and floors will be patterns of white with a light gray grout. There will be tile wainscotting to 40" in patterns of white, and the ceiling and substantial crown molding will be white. The walls will be a medium blue-green, but so little will be visible that it'll function as just an accent color. We can't steal space from the walls except for the medicine cabinet because it backs onto an outer wall. If it weren't for that, our 10" cabinet would be 14" deep, inset into the wall. With an 18" vanity, you'll have plenty of room to feel comfortable, even though 21" is murderous. At 4' depth, our 17" sink was bad, but an extra 6" would have made it okay. Our hall bathroom is now 8'x5.5', with a bite out of it where the toilet is for the master bath's toilet to have room with a swinging door. We stole space in that bathroom outrageously! A cabinet above the toilet, which is 8" deep, is recessed 4" into the wall (3.5" stud plus wallboard). I made two other in-wall cabinets, each about 14"x12", interior. One will be hidden behind a picture frame, so only one will be noticeable. I also but a HUGE medicine cabinet above the vanity, which is only 28" wide but packs in 6 drawers and even a shelf in the plumbing space--and looks nice, too. We couldn't recess that cabinet because the one backing it in the master bath is recessed. The lower in-wall cabinet will hold the first aid kit, while the upper one will hold meds that we use but not regularly--cold meds, etc. The medicine cabinet will hold all daily use things that don't fit in the drawers--even the kids' toothbrushes and tooth-brushing cups aren't going on the counter, which will have just the bathroom clock and the soap, and that's it. On the back of the toilet bowl is a kleenex box holder. In the tub area, I don't use regular shampoo bottles but travel-sided ones with really small openings to make it easier to get just a little shampoo or conditioner, even, and the toys are in a cute plastic frog toys scoop on the wall. Clear glass shower doors--when they arrive--will also help keep it open. I can't emphasize enough the importance of not having stuff sitting out to making a space look larger. Nothing makes a room feel small like a lot of stuff just cluttered around. The mud will only be in the shower. The rest will be sheetrock--the size of the room you have is what you get! In your case, if you REALLY can't move any walls (I'd want a tub in there!!!), I'd indulge in some creative thinking. Your bathroom is 4.5x9' total, which REALLY isn't horrifically small. (Remember that mine was 4x8....) I'd start with the shower. I'd stay in the same footprint but do a Kerdi shower so the threshold could be SUPER narrow--just 2". That gives you a good 2" of apparent interior space in the shower, plus likely another .5" of width without the mud base. Recessed niches are a MUST. Too big is better than too small! I'd get a frameless shower door--almost goes without saying in this setting. I'd do wainscotting to 40", continuing over the top edge of the vanity--this is a kind of "special effect," because unless you paint the upper part of the wall a dark color, it tricks the eye into believing there's more space. Continuing just those 4" behind the vanity makes a big difference, here. For the flooring, I'd do either a small mosaic OR 12x12" or larger, and the 12x12" should be on the diagonal. A "rug" effect actually makes a small room seem larger if the rug part has diagonal lines and the border is small. For the ceiling, crown molding make it seem higher as long as the molding and the ceiling are both white. Painting the ceiling any color but white lowers it in comparison to white. Use hooks rather than rods. They make the space seem bigger and stick out less. I designate a minimum of two hooks per person--one for a towel, one for a robe. The back of the door is a good place to hang things. Use art--and use it strategically. A properly-sized picture can make a space seem larger, and you can use it to hide another recessed medicine cabinet. With a .5"-deep frame, you can have 4.5" shelves. Extra TP, first aid stuff, and irregularly used meds can be stored there. Recess the medicine cabinet, if you possibly can, and make the mirror as WIDE as possible for maximum reflection. I'd commission a custom vanity for the space, and I'd use an undermount sink or would install a square vessel sink in an apron-front manner, like this: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Kraus-White-Rectangular-Ceramic-Vessel-Sink/3250161/product.html You have 42" of space, which is plenty for quite a nice amount of drawers plus a good-sized sink. If you used the sink above, you'd have, with a frameless design, 10.5" for drawers on either side. Make the cabinet kitchen counter height and have two shallow drawers and a deep drawer, and you can still have 8" of open space at the bottom. Even a bun-foot design has less visual weight than going all the way to the floor. Under the sink, add a shelf directly under the plumbing to make a shallow extra "landing" for a small container of things. The one thing, in my bathrooms, that I want space for and don't have is dirty clothes. But as far as everything else, I have MORE storage than I know what to do with! I have space for a cleaning bucket in each bathroom, for all our meds, for my makeup (and plenty of space for kid makeup, when the time comes), even for the Drano, for linens in my bathroom, for tons of bulk storage (extra soap, extra lotion, extra hair products, etc.). We have so much space that the counters can be basically bare. AND far from looking crowded, our hall bath strikes people as much larger than its square footage.

I was out gathering samples today for prospective kitchen reno to a friends 50's era rowhouse. This is it: This where we think we are headed: This kitchen is about 9" on the window wall and 11" on the entrance wall. The interior door goes to the basement. The room is smaller than yours and you enter from the dining room (which is where the back door is) so no eat in requirements. I would think about pulling the fridge off of the "L" and building it in in the corner where the hutch is and then if you have enough space running a banquette between the enclosed side of the fridge and the wall with door to the patio on it. This set up uses the width of the room for the table and chairs and increases the counterspace and storage on the "L". Don't know about in your case but in the house I'm working on the neighbourhood has some family appeal and it is a first tme buyers area. I love small appliances but for first time buyers coming from apartments you want to be careful about using them as they sort of shout: Hey this house is small (they are often expensive as well). Good luck! I recommend using a for free layout software or graph paper and just start moving stuff around and see what you come up with.

I agree with boxerpups! don't feel bad or 'less' (not good phrasing on my part) because it isn't a mega money/size redo! think of all the mess and expense you 'missed' out on - lol! I do think the majority of us out here (even just lurking) are ones who can't afford the big, major, tear down to the studs redo! we want pics and redos like yours - showing what you did for so little and w/o tons of hired people to do it and invade your space. gives us hope for ourselves - things we might really be able to do to update our spaces. I think you did great! the brown of the cabs did look dreary. and look at the money you saved on the appliances! bet they work just as good as full priced ones at a showroom -lol! what a great job!

I just wanted to thank everybody for all your lovely and encouraging comments! It's great doing a remodel (me and my husband both think it's kind of sad we're done with the kitchen as we had so much fun and would love to do another one at some point!) and of course it's nice to see the improvements. But it's also really nice to have other people see it and recognize all those details which we really love, such as the subway tile all the way up to the ceiling and the diagonal checkerboard floor. Wow! thank you all so much for the wonderful words. It was so much work. My back is still feeling the pain.
I think total we spent less than $3000 including the trim for the window, paint and supplies. We also bought a rev-a-shelf, we made a knife drawer which I LOVE, and we also made a charger drawer. I got tired of having all the phone,camera,ipod chargers on the counter. So we took one of the drawers we didn't use, put a power strip in it, made a hole in the drawer, plugged it to the wall and now all the chargers are in the drawer and out of sight.

The sink is Kohler and the faucet is Delta Victorian in Venetian Bronze. I bought those last year. I love the faucet so much that I actually planned the kitchen around it. The sink strainers are also venetian bronze from Lowes to match faucet.
Our knobs (you can't really see them in the pic) are also venetian bronze.

We couldn't do new cabinets but we could update them.

Not much prepping done to cabinets other than a thorough cleaning. The cabinets are made from three different materials (builder grade from late '80s). The inset of the doors is wood, other parts are veneer and the sides are wood-looking paneling. I didn't sand because I wanted everything to take the stain the same. I really just "painted" it with the stain. I didn't wipe off.
I used Minwax gel stain in "walnut". Then polyurethane.
It took alot of time mainly because I have a DH, two boys, and a dog that got in the way. Plus we still had to use the kitchen.
It was two months from the time we ordered the countertop until the last light switch was installed.
About three solid weekends of staining.

Thanks again, and this forum was amazing. I got wonderful ideas and now I'm completely hooked.

so did the gel stain dry hard? Wasn't it a bit sticky or anything? How thick of a coat did you put on it? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just really intrigued!

Robin, I did a thick coat like any paint job. It dried normal. It was only sticky if it wasn't dry. By the next day it was perfectly dry. I did a light second coat.

Here are my steps: (I typed them up once and saved them)

I used Minwax Gel Stain in Walnut and semi-gloss Polyurethane.

First you have to remove the doors. DonÂt fight it just take them off. Clean them really well. Years of grease and dust.
I didnÂt sand. If I had to do it again I would consider applying a dark primer (maybe black since my stain is so dark).
I used a sponge brush to apply and a regular brush to spread. It worked better for me. If you have real wood, apply the stain heavily with the sponge, wait a few minutes, then wipe off with a rag. The more coats you do the darker it gets.
If you have wood/plastic or whatever it is that they make cheap builder cabinets from then:
Apply the stain heavily and as even as possible with the sponge brush. Wait probably about 5-6 minutes. Then using a dry brush, make even straight strokes. This will even out the stain. You can keep brushing until it looks good to you. Sometimes I needed a second coat but not heavy just really a light coat with the sponge.
Then I applied two coats of polyurethane. This was the fun part because you canÂt mess it up. ItÂs clear!
I highly recommend that you practice somewhere. The more you practice the better you get.
I did my master bath. then started on my kitchen and didnÂt get my technique down until halfway thru my cabs.
I just hope it lasts and doesnÂt chip. Some ladies here told me that the poly takes about a month to cure (to make it strong). So be careful with them.
Also be careful when you tape your walls. As I removed the tape, it pulled some of the stain from the cabs. I have to retouch. DonÂt use tape or come up with a different plan.

Thanks for the info mlraff53. Now I'm torn between painting my old oak bathroom vanity (like holly13 did in her kitchen on another current thread) or staining it like you did. I guess it comes down to whether I want to go light or dark....decisions, decisions..... :)

I was actually going to paint the cabinets white and get dark countertops, but DH liked the wood and I love stained wood. So we decided on the gel stain instead. Since I was going dark, I didn't want them to look like they are just painted brown so I didn't cover up the wood grain.
I did my vanity in mahogany (reddish tone). Also looks nice but I'll be painting the vanity white in the guest bath(right off the kitchen) . The walls there are dark brown. We'll see how I do with the paint.

Can I ask, was your backsplash DIY? We planned on doing a subway tile backsplash, too. And when we priced the tile at 19 cents, I never dreamed it could be THAT much, yikes. I know there's grout, tile cutter renting, etc. We may rethink our backsplash, cause our budget is TINY.

momto4boys, no the backsplash was not diy. I had both the backsplash and counter installed by HD. the tiles I think were $14 sf ($0.11 each) plus supplies. I believe I paid a little over $7 sf for installation.

Thanks so much for the info. I'm sure I'll be wishing we'd had the backsplash installed after we're done making a mess of it :) We've never tackled such a project, but I'm looking forward to it.
Dh is really loving your counters, too. I wish they were in our (did I mention TINY? lol) budget.
