Need to sell stocks - never done it before

I have 8 shares of a stock that hasn't moved in years and would like to sell them and not reinvest at this time. What is the cheapest way to sell them? I have the actual stocks and they are only worth about $450.00. I have never invested in the stock market and don't know how to go about this without giving most of the money away to a stock broker.

You could contact the company (or the people who handle the stock for them; for my company it's Wells Fargo) and ask if they have a buy-back program. That probably would be the simplest, cheapest way to go.

You'll see on-line stock brokerages that advertise low per-trade costs, but they're usually geared to high-volume investors. You might see if your bank is associated with a brokerage; your being a customer at the bank might get you some kind of discount, especially if the proceeds will be held in an account you have with the bank. Otherwise, shop around some, especially at some of the smaller brokerage firms. For an odd lot, it probably won't be cheap to sell them, but some places will be cheaper than others.

LOL Suzy. Yay for all the cooking. Way to go. Buttercream.......slurp. Good on a cake, better off your finger or a spatula or bowl, or beater. LOL. I'm overdue for some. Darn diabetes makes it a very infrequent addition to our diet. Good thing it freezes pretty well, since I usually freeze at least half the cake, sometimes 3/4. Robin, you did good to get your Sis to do that job. Grass that long is not for the beginner. Smiles. Even starting mowers that have been sitting since last season can be a pain and require a new spark plug at the least. LOL Lilo, Mowses. Love it. I love my lawn tractor. I call it riding the grass. It's my favorite. I often have people offer to do that for me. NOOOO. Use the push mower for the hill, weed, anything but ride MY grass. Even when I'm so crippled up I can barely get to the garage, that's my reward for making it out there. Krista, I have changed a radiator. Admittedly a long time ago. Not super hard but get ready for some swearing since it's in such a tight place it's usually hard to get at the bolts and such. Also, it depends on what else is hooked to it, like the water pump and such, how hard it is to get out... and in. I bought a rebuilt one so saved a lot of money by doing it myself. Then again, I've changed the heads on a car. That requires you to have a working torque wrench. Those darn bolts can be torqued right off. LOL..The guys at the parts store didn't believe me. Said they're hardened steel. OOpps.. I'm not big on shelled things like oyster, mussels, clams. Think I've only tried clams raw once. I'm told I prepare them all quite well though. I've never eaten sushi. Never rode a unicycle. Wink. Never been our of the contiguous USA. Never had a professional manicure or pedicure, nor hair dye.

I am a crocheter - did some knitting but never took the time to perfect it. Crocheting seems to go faster but uses more yarn. I rather spend money on the yarn and finish sooner! You could use a very simple stitch I am currently using the Sweet Stripes for a baby blanket so I guess it depends on the colors you selected if it is too babyish. If you bought the Splash - blue/green combo I think you are fine. I think the blue/white should be OK but the others signal "baby" to me (maybe others think differently). Another option is using Homespun from LionBrand since it is very soft yarn and a mixture of colors to add some richness to the scarf. They have some patterns for "short" scarves using only one skien and a few others also. Check their site and they also have instructions posted on how to knit/crochet. There is one major drawback for a new knitter/crocheter in using either sweet stripes or homespun - they are a curly/wavy type of yarn and it is harder to distinguish where the stitch actually is. I think a smooth yarn is easier for a beginner and would suggest using a sport weight if you want a light, softer scarf. A solid color is easier to work with for a beginner but the Bernat Softee Baby in Baby Denim Marls has just a hint of color so it is easy enough to work with. I like the His Jeans Ombre but even ombres are harder for beginners. Guess it really depends on whether you have a live resource to help you if you get stuck. Keep the first one simple and then build up your skills.

You should have a helper,someone to mark where you want the hem to be shortened to.It's hard to do this yourself while wearing it.They can also pin in how much you need it to be taken in. I take it you do know how to sew,is that correct??What kind of fabric is it,and is there a lot or any embellishments on it that have to be taken into consideration?? Good luck Kathi

just leave it. I don't know of many people who want brick as a backsplash. in the right kitchen it looks fine.. There's nothing wrong w/the way the brick looks, I just don't think it really goes w/your kitchen sorry,not being mean, just honest. what is going on w/all of the mortar above the stove? was it not cleaned properly? (the brick probably should have been sealed prior to 'grouting') I'd also fill in the area around the outlet. there are some big gaps there that a potential might look at wonder what else is wrong. you can just see it here in this pic. get some diff outlets and bring them forward just a bit. they have wood ones you paint any color. what might look better is going over all of it with Romabio. it's a white wash liming product. you could get a little sample jar and do the entire splash. I think if he did something like this, it might look a bit better Or, what might really look good is if you did more of an opaque coverage. this way you could paint right over that gray mortar where it's super thick, like above the stove. gaps between brick and countertop should be filled w/caulking that matches the countertop color

I'm sorry -- I'd have no way of saying. It's been a long time since I sold an odd-lot like that and I don't remember what it cost for that trade....

I just paid $97 to sell $6200 worth of stock. Next come the taxes :-(

If you go to E-Trade or another discounter I think it is only about $20 a trade. If you go that way, I think you would have to put the shares in their hands before they would sell them. You need to decide if you will sell at whatever the bid price is, which carries a trading cost of only about $15, or for a sum certain - which will cost you a bit more, maybe $20. YOu will want to be sure to specify that you will only sell if all of your shares can be sold in a single transaction - otherwise it could cost you a big chunk of the value. I would open an account, watch the market for a few weeks, and then make your decision. I have found it all pretty easy. I started out by going through my bank, but that was very expensive.
