Best products/way to clean scanner glass?

I have a relatively new Canon PIXMA 750, I wiped the glass with a soft cotton (washed) baby diaper and distilled water.

When I blew up some photos, instead of fine speckles, I had some fine streaks.

Personally, I haven't ever been successful with my (real) windows much less a scanner's glass.

Any tips, tricks or advise this forum can offer would be more than appreciated.

Marf, if it's new you probably have a booklet. See if it tells you about cleaning.

I have an Epson, my book says "....use a soft dry cloth. If the glass is stained with grease or other hard to remove material, use a small amount of glass cleaner on a soft cloth to remove it. Wipe off any remaining liquid with a dry cloth. Be sure there is no dust on your document table. Dust can cause white spots to appear in your scanned image."

It also lists a lot of cautions...no harsh abrasive cleaner, alcohol.....don't spill liquid on scanner etc.

The diaper should be a good choice for the, cloth.

I find one of those microfibre glass cleaning cloths works well - just a cheap one is fine but it tends to stop the streaking effect - I'm hopeless at cleaning windows or mirrors but find using that really helps.

I respect the opinions of others, but glass will not absorb anything, so oven cleaner is safe to use as it can be rinsed off completely. This is one of the reasons it is used in labs. One must be careful in the application of oven cleaner, and I recommend using it outdoors. Oven cleaner Ph is a *base* not an *acid* as so many think. Or you can make a paste of lye and use it, and avoid the possibilty of oven cleaner spray getting in places where it will do damgage - like the lungs or skin. SOS pads and BKF are both very abrasive. Even baking soda is abrasive. I would not use it on glass. But that is just me. There is no "right answer".

Putting myself through college with a housekeeping business the best product to clean glass shower doors of soap scum / water spots is trisodium phospate or TSP for short. Your local hardware store should have it in either powder or liquid form and is cheap. I've only used the powdered stuff and mixed it myself. Just wipe on with a sponge, rinse off with water and towel dry -cloth diapers, are great. Yes cloth diapers, they don't leave lint - Target & WalMart should have them. I still use it and it works on porcelain tubs too. * * *I don't know if it is safe to use on natural stone! So you may want to read the box or look it up on Wiki. Or maybe you've found something good already. I'd love to hear! Good luck!

Re. Murphy's Oil Soap: For polyeurethaned hardwood floors you should NOT use Murphy's Oil Soap. The company I use for screen-and-coat touch-ups specifically asked if I had used Murphy's because evidently if it has been used the screen-and-coat won't finish properly. They say to only use vinegar and warm water and a mop or cloth wrung until almost dry. I have no idea if this applies to engineered hardwoods. HTH.

I saw on HGTV that you can use oven cleaner and a scrub brush and it will do the trick. Make sure to take all safety precautions glasses, mask, and cover your skin. I do not know if this works just passing along the tip! Good luck, Red
