Do You Throw Out the Sliver?

In another thread one poster commented that the last sliver of the soap gets thrown out as it is too tiny to use effectively.

When I was a girl, a Dutch lady who had lived through the Second World War told me how soap was so hard to obtain and precious at that time, that they would wet the sliver and "paste" it to the new bar and let it dry. That way the sliver would be used up. I thought that was a great idea and have done it ever since (looking back, that's over 35 years, sigh).

I never throw out the sliver, nor do I mess around with saving them up and remelting and moulding them or whatever.

What do you do with YOUR sliver?

Nothing - I use liquid soap because it does not have soapy build up in the tub like the bars do. Kathy_PA

Well, they've had their chill period. That's good. You have absolutely nothing to lose. Plant them and see what happens. My neighbor planted daffodils three weeks ago in her yard and they are up and setting blooms. Get to it and keep your fingers crossed!

Do you throw divisions out?

It really depends. Often I find it easier to pot up any divisions I create. It's easier to water them in the pot and put them in the shade and wait for them to settle in while i decide what to do with them and I can ask around if anyone wants them. I have wanted to use most of the divisions I've created, but I am getting to that point where I can't use them all. I have shovel pruned a few things and I don't feel guilty at all. If I had the opportunity to pass them along I would do that, but I don't always. If I had a LOT of divisions that I was planning to make and didn't want any, I might ask around if someone wanted to come over and help me do the divisions and take them off my hands. I posted to Freecycle once to find someone who wanted to dig out shrubs that they could have and I had a man come out in a few days and he was very grateful to get them and I was grateful I didn't have to dig them out. Another way I would consider using divisions, if I were in a position to do it, is to sell them. I go to a local plant sale once a year in the spring and it is a collection of gardeners who pot up all their divisions and propagated materials and sell them for very reasonable prices. I've talked to some of them and this year, one of the particpants said he brought over 800 pots to the sale, because the year before he had 300 that he sold in the first 2 hours. So, that is another way. At that sale, some of the proceeds go to a charity, as well. Or the income could pay for some of the expense of gardening.

Gardenweed, your giving seedlings an "opportunity to relocate" is hysterical. We are one crazy bunch here - such RELATIONSHIPS with what is growing at our homes. So I called the friend who loves the Verbena Bon. on Saturday and left a message to pick up the lasnaga pan of seedlings. He calls back on Monday, was away for the weekend, is busy this week but will come by on Friday to pick the large pan. I've not only spent hours repotting these babies, but now I have to keep them alive for a week! Geeeez. It wasn't even a careful "potting up", just sort of smooshed them into the pan and packed in some promix. Thank goodness it's started to rain here, that will help keep them alive. Anyone else find that people who "want the extras" almost always require a higher level of service then you'd planned? I had a another friend come by this weekend who wanted to "shop" my supply of seedlings. She looked around and said "They're all so tiny... (yes, they would be having spent the past few months in milk jugs..)I'll come back when they are bigger". Oh. So I'll just keep babysitting till they look more like what you'd buy at the garden center? um, no.

Should I do anything for this blueberry bush or throw it out?

I'm worried because the last time I saw this (on the one that died), the berries ended up all shriveled and the stems also began to brown and shrivel/curl. I've seen pictures of various blueberry diseases where the flowers turn brown and the blueberry part and stem itself shrivels. And I'm not seeing this at all on the "healthier" plant...To clarify, the second pictures are of the Sunshine Blue bush which is totally fine. In the fall, the leaves had become reddish around the outer parts of each leaf and spread inward toward the center of the leaf. I later began to notice little green/black dots on the surface of the leaves (not w/in the leaf) that looked like spores. I then decided to pull off all the leaves and figured the plant was dying...But it came back.

I crochet a little mess bag that I use to put the slivers in. Then this bag can also be used as a bath scrubber.

I also paste the tiny sliver on to the new bar. by the way -- I also heard that if you unwrap the new bar of soap and let it 'dry out' for a week or two, it will last longer than if it was fresh out of the wrapper.

If you unwrap your soap and leave it in your "smalls" (undies) drawer to dry out, not only does it last longer but it does double duty making your frillies smell nice :-)

I unwrap all the bars of soap as soon as I buy a multi pack and put them in a basket on the bathroom shelf. I then paste the sliver onto the new dried out bar.

I'm a "paster onto the new bar" also.

Frugal, I guess.

I've heard some say here that they drop it into the pump bottle, with a bit of water, that it melts.

I read this thread as "Do you throw out the silver?"

I couldn't figure out why a frugal person would even think of doing that.....LOL!

I used to paste, but now I'm with Kathy - use liquid soap, and you'll never scrub soap scrum again!

Wish I could use liquid soap, but DH simply hates it. Not worth making an issue about it. We wipe the shower down after every use, so soap scum isn't a big problem.

I put the slivers in the pump soap dispensers and add a little water. They dissolve on their own and add to whatever (read cheapest thing:liquid soap,shampoo, bubble bath)is in the soap dispenser at the moment.

LOL I read it as "silver", too. Then I thought, "Well, they're talking about plastic tableware and whether they throw it out or not. Had this long conversation going on with myself and then realized the topic was soap!

I never did that at all until the DH and I married and he is a paster so all the slivers get pasted in our home...

Guess I need new glasses too. I read "silver" instead of "sliver"!

Oh yes, I wondered why anyone would throw out silver.....I use the bits in the kitchen, keep them for quick little hand washings....DH is a paster....they get used up somehow. MIL has been known to grate the last bits and throw them in with the laundry detergent.

Guess we all need glasses! (Or stronger prescriptions) I, too, kept seeing this as SILVER and didn't bothering reading the thread. Tonight I decided to see who WOULD throw out their silver and that is when I realized I had misread the word!

I guess I am not very frugal when it comes to soap because I haven't done anyting with that sliver. Now I'll think about it!

I was going to say, "Thinking never hurts" - but it seems to me that often disciplined thinking does hurt.

I guess that my real meaning is, "Thinking is almost always a good idea".

Thinking should come before spending.
