Can you use a protractor? If so, you'll like this; the link is to info on a protractor thingie just for computing the angles to be cut. Even standard crown molding is rarely 45° for both cuts, and I think this gadget might help with your unusual angles. I admit I'd try it with elcheapo plain board first. And if you don't personally play with this sort of stuff, see if your trim carpenter would find it useful. You do realize crown calls attention to where ceiling meets wall? Crown molding is a rather traditional and formal design element. From your photo, your house looks more contemporary and informal. That being the case, I think crown molding would look inappropriate in your room -- especially with the window on the right being so close to the ceiling. If you want to add some interest to the space, or pep it up a bit, you might want to think about doing something dramatic with colour. One possibility would be to paint the backs of your bookshelves a contrasting colour, or perhaps a darker more intense colour on one or all of the room walls. Hope this helps. James

HGTV often implies that crown molding needs to "pop", but I think you may need to decide what's more important to you: showing off the molding, or making your ceilings appear as high as possible. Low contrast, letting the moldings blend with the wall, will make the ceilings appear somewhat higher. Painting the molding in a contrast will shorten the ceilings by however deep the molding is (a few inches?), and draws attention to your 8' ceilings. I have 7.5' ceilings at the sides of my living room & kitchen that peak to 8' in the center. I painted the molding in the same matte color I used on the wall, and I love it. The molding doesn't disappear, it still adds architectural interest, a more finished feel to the room, but the ceilings appear much higher than they did when the molding was dark. Using the same color in a higher sheen could be an option, too, since it would allow the molding to blend slightly with the wall but make it show up more than if the sheen were as low as the wall. ffjunk, of course it's a personal choice, but thought I should add, we have a situation similar to yours, with a pass-through window between painted cabinets, as well as a pocket door between a cabinet and a cabinet pantry. Our cabinet crown molding, and our whole house crown molding are the same heights, but different cuts, so the choice was easier for us - keep the same crown molding throughout the kitchen, though it is open concept. We are using stop blocks at the pocket door crown as the pantry is a stained along with the crown molding above it, and the cabinet adjacent is painted, along with the crown above that. The trim around the door will be painted the same as the cabinet/cabinet crown molding. Our ceilings are 9'. We are also using a stop block where the whole house crown meets the kitchen cabinetry crown - it would be very difficult to both cope and scribe the crowns to match and we prefer the stop blocks. I don't have photos as we are still in the midst of remodeling and our cabinet maker has yet to bring and install the stop blocks.
