Comments (3)Can you use a protractor? If so, you'll like this; the link is to info on a protractor thingie just for computing the angles to be cut. Even standard crown molding is rarely 45° for both cuts, and I think this gadget might help with your unusual angles. I admit I'd try it with elcheapo plain board first. And if you don't personally play with this sort of stuff, see if your trim carpenter would find it useful. You do realize crown calls attention to where ceiling meets wall? Not sure you'd really like that affect in that spot. Here is a link that might be useful: for DIY crown molding...See MoreCrown on Vaulted Ceilings?
Comments (18)I guess I'll be the odd "lady" out and admit to having crown on vaulted ceilings at our previous home. Wouldn't have had it any other way. :) In the formal living room, we used the corner blocks capped with a traditional rosette (the same one we used on the fireplace.) Don't know if you can see in this photo, but along the walls, we had a "ledge" of molding built. For the sunroom, we used the traditional corner blocks (with the same rosette's,) and also the mitered crown. One suggestion if you didn't go with the crown, is to build up other architectural details to your room. We did so to our windows - even though we also had the crown - because we felt the wall was lacking substance because of the high ceilings. begoniagirl - Your new molding looks wonderful, as does your walls....See Moreis crown moulding/pic rail ceiling or wall color?
Comments (5)I have the picture molding painted the wall color in my 1899 Victorian double. (The house wouldn't have had crown molding when it was built, and I therefore didn't add it during an extension recent (and still on-going!) renovation, so I can't help with that.) My 10-inch base and all other trim in the house is painted white, and my walls are a sandy beige, or a cream-with-a-little-coffee-added color. I think you can handle it however you want and either way would be appropriate. As someone else pointed out, painting trim the same color as its adjacent surfaces (crown the same as ceiling color, or picture molding the same as wall color) will make it "disappear" a bit. If it's something you'd rather highlight, paint it the trim color for the contrast....See Moreneed pics of ranch house with crown molding
Comments (8)Here's a pic of my 1970 Florida ranch with crown in a few rooms. It was there when I bought it and I just left it. I would not have paid to put it up and didn't in my new house either, as I believe that crown is only suitable for higher ceiling and fairly formal places. I believe one's first responsibility is to honor the inherent nature of the house. To take a 50's ranch and try to gussy it up with crown molding and a Tuscan-style kitchen is just silly. I was thinking European country for the kitchen in my ranch house because that's what looked good to me in the magazines at the time. Fortunately, I quickly came to my senses and realized that the only thing that wouldn't seem strange was a more modern look -- slab doors, glass tile, color, etc. If there is any way to get your friend to embrace the house and love it for what it is, the design piece will always be easier....path of least resistance and all that......See Morerichard_remodels
