Wedding Saving Ideas?

My boyfriend & I are planning to get married in late-June. We're trying to keep our budget to $2500 or less, with fewer than 100 people in attendance (probably more like 50-75).

We will get married in my church and have the reception there ($50 site fee if we don't clean it up). I'm considering ordering a small 'bridal' cake (for show) and a sheet cake (for serving guests). We're only doing a cake & punch reception, so no catering. A friend of a friend will do the flowers, which will charge much less than a florist; plus we'll be doing minimal decorations. Boyfriend's co-worker does photography, or I will ask at the local university if any teachers or students do freelance work.

What other ideas do you have?

A friend went to a bridal show and bought a dress which was at the show - lightly worn and a lot cheaper. Mine came from a yard sale for $50!
One tip is to get married on Friday and split the cost of decorations with someone getting married on Saturday.
We had sandwiches, chips and fruit at our wedding. Made the sandwiches (chicken and ham salad bought from a caterer), bought the chips at an outlet and the fruit from a caterer but Sam's club would have this kind of stuff in bulk.
Go to a party supply store for your paper goods and tablecloths. Good luck Toni!!!

Do a google search on "frugal weddings" and check the parties forum for wedding tips.

You can made very inexpensive and easy bouquets for the bride and attendants from long-stemmed flowers tied together with pretty ribbon (very romantic) I did this from the grocery store floral dept--VERY inexpensively!! The throwaway bouquet could be made out of a standard bouquet put in a holder made from a plastic cool whip container (hole in the middle) with lace on top so no one can see. Floral tape around the stems.

Buy your dress off the racks or used. Make sure it fits in the shoulders and have a friend alter it. If too short--add lace.

Don't buy the dyed shoes--just plain white or off white shoes and add a shoe buckle you ornament with pearls or rhinestones, etc..

Dollar store disposable cameras on each table for guests. Decorate the tables with hand painted wine glasses with tinsel spilling out of them and those flat stones used in floral arrangements sprinkled down the middle of the tables. One lucky guest at each table takes the glass home. You can get wineglasses for zip at dollar stores and yard sales (because they don't have a set) to paint.

Did you mention chosen colors or a theme? Nature inspired actually covers a lot of ground. Budget will play a huge role... sometimes, do-it-yourself weddings end up nickel and diming you to death... if you do it right, though, you can save a small fortune! My advice would be start making lists. Get all your important ducks in a row first. When, where, how many guests, colors, theme... You'll need to book a minister, invitations, music/entertainment, food, cake, bar/drinks, photography... you'll need alternate arrangements in case of rain or bad weather... you'll need to think about parking for guests, powder rooms (bathroom facilities) for guests... And remember, you're the bride... so you won't have time to do anything on the day of the wedding, except get ready... you'll need lots of help. And you'll need good rest the night before. You'll need seating for the guests during the wedding... then there's the reception... tables and seating. Are you doing buffet? Or large sit down catering? Dance floor? The wedding will be outdoors by the lake, and will the reception be indoors, or outdoors? Timing... you want everything timed so it all goes well, and there are no large gaps where guests don't quite know what to do. Just a few questions to ask yourself, and keep in mind... weddings are often hectic, and the better you can plan ahead, the better prepared you'll be in case something comes up you weren't expecting. You'll sort of want the theme to carry through... from the bouquets and boutonnieres, to the table decorations and any hall decorations... bridal table, cake table, gift table, card box, etc... a word of caution - gift table and card box should be near the bridal table or where there will always be someone to keep an eye on it - as far from an exit as possible. You mentioned dish strainers above... and I just recalled seeing small pasta sieves at a large store in really nifty colors... those could be lined with moss and planted with succulents or annuals... then the guests could take them home. The ideas are so endless that when I did my own wedding, I hardly knew where to begin! I began using Google, and using key words that helped me locate pictures of what I sort of hand in mind... I ended up at a second hand store buying about 50 coffee cup saucers, spray painted them white, sprinkled on glitter while still wet, and I found a sale at Hobby Lobby on tall white scented candles at 50 cents each. I hot-glued a ring of matching flowers to each saucer, and it turned out fabulous. It was a November wedding with white and burgundy as colors, all silk flowers for ease of prepping ahead, mostly roses. Everyone has contributed such nice ideas... and if you spend a few days going through wedding how-to books, magazines, the internet and its many wedding sites and blogs, craft magazines... you'll have so many ideas, I know you'll find the right one for your wedding. I think key for you will be keeping lists... keeping a budget... and checking things off your list as they are accomplished. In fact, I know some of the wedding sites have lists you can print to help you out a bit. Candy bars are really popular right now, but if it will a summer wedding, that might not work out. Photo booths are also popular... where you hire a photographer, and they set up a booth like you see at malls, and you get to take 4 snap shots, then they go right into a wedding album, and the guests can write a personal message. My son and daugther-in-law just did that and it was so much fun! Centerpieces... depending on when the wedding is, there should be plenty of flowers available in a rainbow of colors... once you've chosen your main colors, you shouldn't have any problems matching up potted centerpieces in any container type you like... baskets, shells, boxes, colored plastic flower pots, clay pots, anything can be a container as long as it holds some soil. And don't forget keeping a list for gifts, and sending thank you cards... it's the personal touches that mean the most. :-) I wish you the best! Yeah, Dilly, I would vote for "elope" too. Victoria, is having a big wedding right now important? You could do a ceremony on your fifth anniversary and repeat your vows. Lots of couples do that. It sounds like you are cutting nearly every corner that you can. There are other ways you can make use of the space that you have in your house, however. Could you rent out "storage space"? Most older houses lose a lot of heat through the roof, because insulation is old or missing completely. You can buy insulation that you can blow into the attic yourself. For the average house, though, it runs about $300 for the insulation. Lowe's will loan you an insulation blower for a deposit. The deposit here is pretty steep, but for that you could put it on your credit card. They will credit it back when you bring the blower back. They have insulation you can buy in rolls to lay in the attic, too. You could maybe get a roll each pay day. Be sure to get the kind for attics and not for walls. They have expandable foam in cans that you can use to seal the space behind mop-boards in every room. You'd be surprised how much cold air comes in there. You might see if you can buy text books used online at places such as Amazon.com. You can also sell them there. You had a credit card payment on your list -- is that from previous spending or is that how you pay for your monthly needs? Nothing wrong with using a credit card for monthly needs as long as you pay the bill in full when you get it each month. But if you're carrying a balance, try to get that paid down just as soon as you can. The interest rate on a credit card is staggering. Some credit card companies will pay cash back -- a small percentage of what you buy. Discover card is one. For prescriptions, talk to the doctor about whether you can have samples. You can also contact the maker of the drug and if you qualify you may be able to get the prescriptions free. Think carefully about whether you should sell your big house. You will lose money on it if you sell now. Moving is expensive. There will be deposits and activation fees. Do you plan to stay in the area you're in now after you're out of school? If so and if you plan to have children, owning a big house will put you ahead of the game then. How about your mortgage? Are you paying high interest? Can you refinance at a lower interest rate? If, on the other hand, you REALLY want to sell, is there anything you can do to make the house more attractive? I'm constantly amazed at how buyers will choose one house over another simply because they like the paint job better, or some other little thing that could be easily changed. How's the curb appeal? Maybe you could rent with an option to buy? You would still have to live someplace, though.... Have you compared auto insurance rates lately? There's another thread showing the buckthorn cultivar with a number of fruits on it. And it - like the rampantly growing virginia creeper - is deciduous = seeing through it all winter. In general the quality hedges for shade are yew, holly and box. With different specific kinds of these having differing regional suitability. But attractive dense hedges like these take many years to get much height. Whereas fast growing kinds like privet tend to have a more sloppy appearance associated with their fast growth, unless kept formally sheared - as always in life there are tradeoffs involved with this subject area. And with you being in USDA 5 long term cold hardiness will be an important factor. Otherwise with that pine on your side of the fence and the other quite close to it on the other side being where the existing hedge attempt ends their presence is probably what killed the arborvitaes. (Although it looks like you planted the now highly prevalent 'Smaragd' - partial or complete failures both with recent as well as older hedge plantings of this particular variety are rather frequent, due probably to an assortment of circumstances).

Most counties require a witness to the wedding and that person also signs the official wedding certificate to be filed at the court house. Side note: In the eyes of the court, a pair is not considered legally married until the wedding certificate has been filed. While searching my family's history, I found 2 wedding dates for my grandmother; one date on the day of the ceremony and a second date two weeks later when it was filed. Before automobiles, Pastors often collected wedding papers and went to the court house maybe once or twice per month to file the wedding certificates. There was a hazard: If something happened to the Pastor in the interim and the papers never filed; That can cause problems at later times when probating an estate or other legal matters.

Talk to Jamie of Montana (and THS) fame.

She's good at frugal ideas - and has been planning a wedding for some time.

Seems to me to make a lot more sense to put $1,000. into a down payment on a home (that both will inhabit for years - if, we hope, the marriage lasts: if not, probably one, more than likely the female, especially if they have kids).

Rather than on a dress - that only one will inhabit.

And that for a few hours. Only once.

But - who ever accused hooman beans of being logical! Especially when it comes to weddings!

I have received 2 invitations done on the computer. One was rather tacky but one was actually quite attractive - they used green ferns as a background.
The only problem with the disposible cameras is if kids get their hands on them. My sis in law has lots of photos of kids making faces and she bought the decorated wedding cameras.
Toni I saw on the KT you are having dress problems - I wish I were the same size but I was a lot smaller then. Spread the word! Someone will have a dress you can buy cheaply or borrow.

My ultimate frugal wedding experience was all about blood test and licence fee. Justice of the peace performed ceremony, no guests, one witness. We wore our best clothes and incurred no expenses.If I had it to do again....I would do the ceremony. Working through the financials of a wedding ceremony with a potential spouse is just about the best way I know of to find out about potential money problems in a hurry. Better to lose money on wedding plans than to be stuck with a spendthrift spouse or an expensive divorce.Sandy

We could add an extension to this place called "G-bay" (maybe "ths-bay"?).

Sorry - can't help, though - no such dress around here.

Thanks Ed, but my ideas won't be much help for Toni, I'm afraid. DF and I are "running away" - just us and his brother as a witness, to Lake Tahoe, and that will be that. I bought a dress at Dillards for $20 that will work just fine...skirt and jacket set in white that will also work for other occasions (though we might do costumes if we feel like it, since we're getting married on Oct. 31). Our main focus is buying a house in Oct. that we can both move into when we get back, so not much planning is going into the "wedding" part of it for us - we'll plan our trip closer to the date. :-)

Good luck, Toni! I bet it will be lovely, no matter what. If you go with computer invitations, there are some really nice papers you can get - it will still be much cheaper than having them done at a print shop (I plan on doing announcements when we get back on my computer, with nice parchment type paper).

Have you seen the cable show "For Better or for Worse"? They give the couple's family (with a wedding planner's help) 1 week and $5000 to plan a wedding - the ones I've seen turn out beautifully (mostly) and they have lots of low cost ideas.

If you do decide to wear costumes ... if including masks - take a prelimiary peek under the mask to make sure that you're getting whom you thought you were.

if you want to do invitations on a computer, look into getting them actually photocopied at Kinko's onto your special paper. I don't know how much it costs, but remember the printer ink cartridges are expensive! And it takes a while to print stuff on there.

One thing you can do, even if you can't buy a dress on ebay is to sell it on ebay when you are finished with it (if you don't want to keep it for sentimental reasons) and recoup some of the cost. A friend of mine bought a dress off the rack at David's Bridal at one of their $99 sales and actually made money selling it on ebay when she was finished (even including the cost to dryclean it). In any case, they often have good deals on wedding dresses there.

Consider using silk flowers vs. real ones for your arrangements and supplementing with inexpensive greens for a "fresh" look. Silk flowers can be very inexpensive at craft stores when they are on sale, with coupons etc.

Carefully size your invitations to save on postage.
