Bright White or Off White w/ This Granite? Wed. is Decision Day!

I need help figuring out what color our new cabinets should be painted, and would really appreciate your input! I have to let the cabinet builder know by this Wednesday, and I am so confused...Here is our Kashmir White slab...

Our kitchen will be open to the DR/FR and foyer. We have bright white baseboards that match the bright white beadboard (only below a chair rail) The other walls are Sourdough, a medium beige/taupe color, that provides contrast to the bright white mouldings.

I originally was planning on having the cabinets painted the same bright white. However, now that I have seen the Kashmir White granite w/ paint samples, I think slightly off-white cabinets would "go" better with the granite. BM's White Dove looks nice with the off-white granite, and I think there is enough of a contrast between that and the whiter mouldings...

However, would it look funny to have off-white cabinets right next to bright white beadboard at the end of the kitchen? Would it look good to have them different....OR would the cabinets look dirty next to the bright white beadboard there?

If any of you have Kashmir White granite, what color white did you paint your cabinets?

This picture shows the soon to be removed bright white cabinets and the Sourdough walls. At least we'll be getting rid of the ivy wallpaper!

Have you seen a piece of that Granite next to the Sourdough? The paint looks pink to me, and maybe I see some of that pink in the granite. I don't see the bright white with the granite, but would have to get them in the same light to tell!!

Pretty granite choice, and your dining room is so pretty!

Thanks, Springroz.... The corner cupboard will be going (at least the one that you see in the photo.) There's a matching one on other wall, but the wall to the left and right of the kitchen entrance will be coming down to open it all up (and the base cabinets at the entry will be angled to give the illusion of more space.

I had a piece of paper w/ the Sourdough paint with me. It does have a taupe/pinkish tone to it. My slab doesn't have the garnet dots some KW has, and I'm not sure the granite is as good w/ the walls as it is w/ the floor....The white in the granite is not bright white, which is why I'm hesitating to have the cabinets that white. Sounds like you think off white would be better? I'll post a picture that shows it later this a.m. (No time now!)

Ah, a topic I may be able to help out with. We recently installed off the shelf (Lowe's) white subway tile. The brand is American Olean (not sure about the spelling!). I remember reading in a magazine that in a white kitchen there should be varying shades of white to keep it from looking sterile, just as someone mentioned above. When my husband installed it he and my mom both liked how it looked: as if it had been grouted with gray grout. I knew I didn't like this look but was almost talked into it. I mention this because of your previous statement "i have always loved the white subway with white grout look, but i donno, with the different shades, i might have to try something else, and that really worries me because i am detouring from what i originally like. " Stick to what you like or you won't be happy. I almost went with gray grout. Perhaps it may look better or more appealing but it is not the look I'm going for. And since you've mentioned that you are worried about the shade of white you've chosen change it now before it's too late. I personally think it will look great but being that you are questioning it makes me think it is not really what you want and are hoping to be talked into liking it. But if you stick with your tile I wouldn't go with a cream grout but rather one that matches the tile and blends nicely. To answer your question In my opinion the color of the grout makes a difference. Just look at kitchens with white subway with gray grout vs white grout and you'll see what I mean. I don't think an off white grout will make it blend with the cabinets better, it could make it look soiled. White will make it look whiter but IMO cleaner. I say keep the backdrop (backsplash) simple. As someone mentioned above you will have things on the counter to break it up. I plan on putting more items on our counters and the gray grout for me would be too busy. Not to mention I'm not the tidiest-so I need everything else to be simple. I sure hope I did't confuse you! Here are pics of our off white cabinet, BM moonlight white, though not quite as creamy as yours, with white subway tile and bright white grout. Below is a link to segbrowns kitchen. I think the pewter grout in this kitchen looks great because of all the other elements. But with such creamy cabinets as yours I'm not sure about gray/pewter grout. Gray grout look (before grouted). My cabinets look quite stark here but are really creamier in person. Hopefully you can see a difference in the shade of the cabinets compared to the white subway-it is hard to capture in a pic! CL777, totally understand... your kitchen is not small at all, its bright, airy and open, very nice.. i still think you should bring a sample of your cabs to put up against any stone u choose...it really will help u decide... my advice to you and anyone trying to pick granite is: You will know it when u see it.!!! i did the same thing and looked at least 30 slabs if not more..some i really liked but i just could not pull the trigger, i just didn't LOVE it. and when u are spending that much money, you better love it. .when i saw mine, magma gold/sedna (2 names for same stone), i knew that was it, i did not want to look anymore. the counter guy wanted to take me to another slab yard and I said "nope, this is it"....trust me, u will know!!! another thing i did which really helped me decide is put a incandescent light up against the stone.. you really get the true colors of the stone. with fluorescents you don't.. that's if you are in an indoor slab yard, of course... bring your cab sample, paint sample, floor sample and anything else u have because it will all help u decide!! best of luck, i know its a tough decision :)

I just put a bathroom floor (yeah, well, someone else did the work, I just did the pattern!) with 1" hex unglazed in white. When the guy helping me said "I can grout tomorrow" I ran to Home Depot to see what sort of gray grout I could get, and the choices were pretty limited. The recommended-by-Bill in that brand was Platinum, and it would have been a special order. I went with a slightly darker grout and it thankfully dried light. I'll snag a photo when I go up to the house later today and post it, even though it's hex and not subway, if you like. I love the way the soft gray accents the tile, and I would have assumed, prior to the Bill/Mongo/Bath and kitchen forum experience, that I should have done white.

Ohhh for another I liked - taj mahal quartzite. Very different from AW but I still really love the look of it. I second/third the pic your own slab. There were two very different AW's at the fabricators that I found mine at. One was just not me, mine is like johns. The other one - it was night and day for me but beauty IS in the eye of the beholder. Mine - that I selected, licked, stickered, put on hold (took many pics close and far and I could identify it by some of the areas of the stone): The 'other' one in the same warehouse - just not me and I would have been devastated if I just requested AW without specifically specifying the slab and this one was installed:

I vote for a creamy, off white.

I LOVE your floor color! That is beautiful! I really dislike dark flooring and yours looks bright and cheerful. :)

I vote for a creamy, off-white too based on the cream color in the KW granite. It is beautiful by the way. We almost went with that same granite color. It came down to that or White Spring and we ended with WS - still deciding on paint color. Can't wait to see what your finished kitchen looks like!

Thanks, Forum Friends : ) I am quite excited because I "visited" our slab today, and the Dove White looks great with it. I think that the brighter white beadboard and mouldings will provide just enough of a contrast to the Dove White cabinets, and the DW color is just "warm" or creamy enough to soften the look and blend in nicely with the off-white color in the granite. I read the last two comments right after deciding on the Dove White color, so I'm really glad you all seem to agree with my decision!

I really liked White Spring, and look forward to see how it looks in your kitchen, barfootm! Guess we have similar taste : )

Dove White is not a creamy white. I have it and in a kitchen with lots of natural light it is very white white.

Hmmmm..... It looks "creamier" next to the bright white, and it blends in nicely with the granite "white", which is not bright white. I guess it is good I didn't go any whiter!!???

sarapamela, are the "dove white" "white dove" colors getting mixed in your mind? I know they do mine! What brand are you talking about?

I know SW AND BM have one and the other. But, what is "dove white" at BM is not like "white dove", or did I mix that up too?

One brand is creamier, one is whiter. I have SW dove white (or is it white dove) on my trim, and it seems a lot whiter to me than BM other.

Is that confusing enough?
I'm very anxious to hear what color/brand you go with, I'm in the process of choosing as well.

But I DID notice that in your first post, you called it BM's white dove, and then in the choice post, you called it dove white. So, is there a difference in choice? Or just words? LOL Crazy paint makers and their names!

It's BM White Dove.... Sorry for confusing you. I didn't realize I had it backwards. Who knew there were two such similarly named whites!

This one isn't creamy, but it isn't bright white, either. The granite is both cool with the gray tones and warm w/ the off white. Here's hoping the White Dove ties it all together nicely! I'll let you know if we like it (and we better, since I won't see the cabinets until after they are painted!)
