Walnutcreek, it's not so much that I posted a technique to refinish pots. It's just that through the years I've posted a lot of pictures of my garden showing the pots that have been painted and/or antiqued. Basically I paint a pot, plastic or clay, with latex paint (much of it is paint that has been returned to paint stores and sells for 2 or 4 dollars a can) and then I thin another color paint (small containers of many colors are available at hobby stores) with water for the 'antiquing'. It's just brushed on and wiped it off with a damp paper towel. Some of the pots are ordinary black nursery pots and some are plastic pots that have a design to make them look like clay pots. Anything goes, just keep trying to get the effect you want. It helps to look at some 'pretty' pots at garden centers or on line. Jim mentions 'Fusion' spray paint which is formulated to stay on plastic pots. I haven't tried it yet. Ordinary paint flakes off shiny plastic pots if they are not roughed up with sandpaper first. Wishing you the best with your pot painting. You can't mess up a pot because you can always paint it over again.

The paint is (Benjamin Moore) Impervex Latex High Gloss Metal & Wood Enamel, and it comes pre-made in Black. That's what I get. It's expensive! Here (Boulder, CO) one gallon is $57. The reason I use it is because it's what I was told at the paint store umpteen projects ago. I should probably check out Valspar and / or Behr but a bird in the hand ... and I want all the doors to match. (The SW store is a bit of a drive, which is why I didn't mention it.) For my children's rooms I'm planning on just painting the hall-side of their doors, not the side which faces into their bedrooms. I'm planning that because I don't want to introduce that much black into their rooms and then I'm concerned I'd have to paint their closet doors too. And I don't want to do that either. (lazy) Thank you for asking about my tiles! You are too sweet. They were laid a couple of weeks ago and I just got finished putting the second coat of wall color on. Seriously, I am like one year ahead of schedule. Yea!!! I still have to paint the cabs and then do my gingham effect on the walls, so now I'm one year out again. I think I haven't been really enjoying the tiles yet because they've been covered with a dropcloth and I am instead focusing on what isn't done, instead of enjoying what is. Sister, I am going to turn over a new leaf!

Although the primer is not as substantial as one you'd apply, I don't prime them either (unless I'm covering a prior color). I use Rustoleum paint usually on those doors (ours and rental). It holds up very well, especially on rentals which take higher than average wear ;) Our garage service door is white Rustoleum, and has held up very well. Recoated once in 12 years. Be careful sanding, runs the risk of pulling the existing primer on there off.

Seems to me that painting over the white with black paint would be the easiest way to deal with it. I wouldn't want to try removing the white paint as you could end up somehow compromising the shingles' effectiveness (scraping, etc.) and why work that hard if you can just go over it?
