Paint Roller Tut

I just used a non animated siggie that I already had made up.....I think its one of those translated tuts 'cuz in places you sort of have to read between the lines.......but if you like working with layers, this is the tut for you.....

When you leave paint opened in the air for too long, paint snots will develop and then when you go to apply the paint they get on the walls. This can also happen when using old pans, roller grids, buckets, etc when dried up paint gets dislodged and ends up in the fresh paint. You want to use new equipment or clean equipment if possible. The way to fix this problem is straining the paint. You can buy paint strainers at the paint store that will fit over 5 gallon buckets and gallon cans or you can just have somebody hold the strainer while you pour the paint through. You can also use old nylons to strain paint. Cheap rollers will not give you paint snots but they may shed and leave little strands of lint all over your fresh paint job. I would recommend a top line roller cover since using a cheap one will only save you a few bucks. Purdy white doves or Wooster pro-dooz are examples.

Paint Sprayer vs Roller/Brush

My wife and I just closed on our house. At 2600sqft. there is quite a bit of wallpaper to remove and thus, a ton of painting. I was thinking of picking up a paint sprayer to hopefully make this a bit quicker and also give us better results than a roller and brushes. I also figured I could also use the sprayer when it comes time to reseal our cedar siding and deck. Does anyone have any insight and recommendations on paint sprayers? I’ve been looking at Graco and Wagner and there are a ton of different models.

Where do you dispose of the residue that comes from cleaning an oil based paint brush? I will be using oil based primer for some of my cabinets... I use a metal can saved from canned beans, etc. to clean the brush in. Whatever the solvent, I save it into a clean empty Ragu pasta sauce jar. After a few days, the solids separate to the bottom and I use the clear solvent off the top for the first cleaning the next time I need to clean a brush. Finish cleaning up with fresh solvent; save that into a new jar, usually. I save because I'm often needing to clean a brush. Otherwise, I dump it into the (cold, no-fire, fire pit.) Any cleaning rags with oils/ solvents, get hung on the edge of the fire pit to dry and burned later. If you have no plans to need the solvent again, you can leave it in the can and set it outdoors, under cover (so it doesn't collect rain water) to evaporate. Once the solvent has evaporated & the solids are thoroughly dry, you can toss it into your regular garbage.

Thank you both.....you're working with approx. 18 layers.....its the usual hide 16 layers & merge visible, taking it back to 9 layers....

The tut will seem confusing at first but take a couple of trys at it & you'll soon have it sorted...

This is my second effort, kept losing track of all the layers, in the end, I found it best to merge one at a time.Enjoyable once you get sorted out.Hazel

I did the layers the same way you did....otherwise it got a little confusing....I also kept renaming my layers (1,2,3 etc) because I found my V8 would reverse the order of the layers when I duplicated them; it would put layer 9 at the top instead of layer 1...this way it was easier to keep them in order...

Wonderful work girls. I gave it a try and had the layers screwed up so bad. I'm sure it will at least take me another two times to get it.

I had to take a couple of runs at it too...but things will magically sort themselves out....just take your time & make sure that you have the correct layer highlighted before you begin a step....I find I charge ahead thinking that I'm working on a certain layer only to find out that its not the one that's highlighted....grrrr....
