Great Stuff - expanding foam
Comments (5)Hi Have used the "stuff in almost every conceivable manner.lol The most ambitious is a 7x10 foot waterfall. The oldest is a 180 rift lake cichlid tank ,used as a cave sytem setup in 01. It has a lot of advantages but also some drawbacks lol. Requires a coat of paint as it is a sickly color and will degrade in UV light. It will not hold water so can't be used as a dam. There are 3 different degrees of expansion. I find the least expanding the strongest. For islands i place some plastic pots in a group spray the foam around them leave space between so foam gets all around each pot. Do this on a smooth flat surface after curing it will pop off by running a blade under it. Not too wide as it tends to curve while curing.Requires a coat of paint, not only to improve the color but to protect from UV. I use acrylic latex but two part epoxy is more chip resistant also about 3 times more expensive lol.. Underwater use is limited as it's so bouyant it will pop off of a smooth surace.. This can be overcome by curing painting and gluing to surfaces using silicone . How artistic are you?? Given the range of color in acrylics you can make many faux finishes . I've done marble lapis and even tiger eye and opal. Might mention that plants will root right through it spoiling the effect lol On the waterfall I find the "bleeding" effect rather interesting. You can also get it in a black color at about 4 times the price. It will fade overtime anyway. BTW I find that if you want to add other materials such as rock limbs bark sand coatings . It's best to cure it paint then silicone the additive. Greatly expands the adhesion time. Makes a wonderful base for moss gardens by doing the above but adding coir with the silicone. Good luck with whatever you decide . To me the pros outweigh the cons. gary...See MoreWhere do I get this foam to grow my seeds in?
Comments (3)Now that I have pulled OUT my herb seed plugs,...I finally got my tomato kit, along with all the others I bought. I didnt want to wait 6 months to plant my tomatos. So I see these are planted in a sponge that is like the throw away sponge brushes for painting with varnishs or shelacks. Very light and porous. I looked into the rockwool situation, and the company that sells it said it would work great in my AeroGarden, just soak it for 1-2 days and rinse out before planting into it. To get the PH right? So I might just buy a small package of them off of EBay,they are round and have a slit cut in them already! Already to go! I planted the tomatos, turns out you only get 2 red and 1 yellow tomato plug planted and ready to go. Then 4 empty plug spaces,it makes room for when the plants are big, down the road. I saved the sponges and baskets and domes from the herb kit and when/if I get tired of tomatos, and I want to try it. I can plant my dwarf marigolds, use the 'petunia setting' for lights and food, and see what happens. I put in 1 plug with new dwarf marigold seeds in it to see if they sprout and if there will be room for them, once the tomatos grow. Its day 3 and so far no sprouts. Boy I'm impatient! IF I actually get another unit for Christmas,I'll plant up lettuce or salad greens in that one. OR maybe do the petunia kit! Everything that I cant grow out side for more than 2 months, without bugs or something else killing them. The heat alone usually gets to them. So I still dont know where to get this sponge, this light and airy sponge, but this Rockwool seems to be the next best choice?...See Morehow do I wash peppers off my hands?
Comments (131)I've tried many things over the years. Gloves(whether latex or nitrile offer "some" protection, but when you're processing superhots for hours, the capsaicin IS going to penetrate). I've tried butter, milk, oils, vinegar, soap...all with very limited cooling. But last year, I tried something different. I used to just deal with the limited "cooling," but the heat really wouldn't subside until overnight. I still don the nitrile gloves, but now I actually wash my hands with just plain white vinegar. BUT... I don't rinse or dry it off. Instant relief, but there's still "some" warmth. So, I'll do it again about 15 mins later. All pain/heat pretty much dissipates within an hour. My theory is that the capsaicin is not only on the surface of your skin, but has started to penetrate deeper layers. So, wash your hands with all the soap or oil you want...if you rinse it off, you haven't given it time to penetrate those other deeper layers. Comments (5)Goo Gone is all ways great for sticky stuff, but not sure about using it on wood surfaces. Another trick is to use mayonaise or peanut butter. They really do work and won't harm the wood! Just rub one of them on and wipe off, you may have to repeat the process a few times, but it should work. Kathy G in MI...See MoreHU-221034462
