Moving to Canada

Can anyone recommend any websites, especially those with discussion forums, about moving to Canada?

I've done searches and they come up with the usual government sites. There doesn't seem to be much out there dealing with all the nitty gritty with advice and opinions.

Do you want advice about the process of moving, dealing with red tape, etc. or about where to live, cost of living in Canada...?

Mehitabel & Brooke, Your descriptions of dogwood and redbud make me homesick for Little Rock and the nearby lake where people had rustic cabins. There were wild dogwoods in the woods there - even some with pink flowers - and cornflowers & honeysuckle all around. In town, there were redbuds (also in the woods), mimosa trees, and cultivated azaleas that stayed in the ground all year and got huge. Japonica, forsythia (sp?), wisteria, magnolia trees, hydrangeas, honeysuckle. And yes, the beautiful Japanese maple. Other places in Arkansas, there were fields of wild azaleas. Both my grandmothers and one grandfather had green thumbs and grew plants in the house and outside. Growing up, I was more into fish, birds, hamsters, frogs, lizards, snakes, and dogs than plants but in my early 20s, became fascinated with bonsai. In Mississippi, where I lived for several years, the squirrels got my treasures. Moved back to Arkansas and raised lots of interesting houseplants, using bonsai methods to keep them from taking over the place. No outside plants interested me much except pansies. In Minnesota, more houseplants. Always, orchids were the magical and the impossible - I'd never have the greenhouse it took to grow them, although I pored over greenhouse plans a lot. When DH and I moved into the house in the 'burbs about 4 years ago, somehow I picked up the book "Orchids Simplified: An indoor gardening guide," by Henry Jaworski. My mom, an excellent cook, always said if you could read, you could cook. I believed her and became a gourmet cook. Jaworski said if you can grow houseplants, you can grow orchids. I believed him and bought a Phal from a garden/craft chain. Sure enough, the Phal thrived and rebloomed as I followed Jaworski's instructions. One day, I was ga-ga over the orchids at a local garden center. One of the staff and I started talking. She said if I could grow Phals, there were lots of other orchids I could grow in the house, and she told me about Orchids Limited and AOS. I got chills and raced home. It was winter and pitch dark, but I checked MapQuest and headed straight to Orchids Limited, knowing they wouldn't be open that late. Have you ever seen a commercial orchid grower's greenhouses at night during a cold winter? A fairyland. In the middle of frozen Minnesota, there was a glowing oasis of light and life. The insides of the greenhouse windows were dripping with humidity, so the plants inside were out of focus, just like a dream. The next day, I left work early to get there before closing. Walking into that tropical paradise was indescribable - the warm, humid air, the fragrance of blossoms, the brilliant colors, all those lush green plants, the burble of a fountain. Outside, the air was so dry it hurt my nostrils. Inside, my eyes and lungs and nose and heart gave a big sigh of thanks. I went home and started reading about cultural conditions possible in the house. That was about 2.5 years ago. Over time, the houseplants went to other homes. The other day, I ran across 2 brand new books on houseplants that had never been taken out of the bag. Orchids must have taken over right about then. Every year, I think - gotta get some native plant gardens going outside, esp. because we have ducks, geese, herons, etc. in the pond just beyond the fence. So far, it hasn't happened. Good Morning Zidane, The import of plant material into Canada is currently reglulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's Plant Protection Division (CFIA). I believe a decision was just recently made by the Canadian government to transfer Plant Protection responsibilities back to Agriculture Canada, but I'm not certain when that will happen. Your best plan of attack would be to contact the Oregon Department of Agriculture and tell them what you wish to do. ODA will be the ones who inspect your roses and provide you with the required Phytosanitary Certificate for export to Canada. They will also know what the certification requirents are and what the Phyto must attest to. Once you have things organized with ODA, I would suggest that you contact the CFIA in Vancouver and discuss things with a Program Officer with the Plant Protection Program in that office. When you are ready to move the plants to Canada, you will have to present them and the Phytosanitary Certificate to a Canadian Border Services Officer. They may choose to hold them for inspection by CFIA at the border, or more likely let you move them through for inspection by CFIA at destination. The good news is that no Import Permit is required between Canada and the U.S. I import roses from Oregon and other U.S. nurseries often. The CFIA has an online web system called the "Automated Import Reference System" (AIRS). As with all things scientific regulated by governments, plant import requirements are complex. AIRS allows you to access requirements for specific species and types of plants from various places and determine admissibility and import requirements. I have inputed a search for roses, with soil from Oregon to be imported into British Columbia for planting. The result is pasted below: ______________________________ Recommendations to CBSA/Documentation and Registration Requirements Refer to CFIA-NISC(must be accompanied by the following documents\registrations):•Phytosanitary Certificate Importer / Broker Instructions DOCUMENTATION INSTRUCTIONS PHYTOSANITARY CERTIFICATE - Obtain from Country of Export prior to importation. CONDITIONS OF IMPORT The Phytosanitary Certificate must accompany the shipment. The material must be certified free from Columbia Root Knot Nematode (MELOIDOGYNE CHITWOODI). 1)The phytosanitary certificate must bear one of the following additional declarations: "The material was produced and prepared for export in accordance with the conditions of entry specified in Quarantine Directive 82-01 of February 1, 1982." or "The soil originated in an area in which, on the basis of official surveys, Meloidogyne chitwoodi does not occur." Requirements for European brown garden snail (Cornu aspersum, syn. Helix aspersa): The Phytosanitary Certificate must list the following additional declaration: "The plants in this consignment were inspected and found to be free of European brown garden snail (Helix aspersa/Cornu aspersum)." 1)The material must be certified free from European brown garden snail (HELIX ASPERSA). The phytosanitary certificate must bear one of the following additional declarations: "The soil originated in an area in which, on the basis of official surveys, Helix aspersa does not occur." OR "Material is free of European brown garden snail (HELIX ASPERSA)." 1)Requirements for Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica): The shipment must be accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate indicating the state of origin, OR a U.S. Nursery Certification Program Phytosanitary Certificate OR Shipping documents showing a U.S. Greenhouse Certification Program label. A Phytosanitary Certificate is required to accompany the consignment, containing the following Additional Declaration: "This shipment conforms to 7 CFR 301.92 which regulates the movement of nursery stock for Phytophthora ramorum from the States of California, Oregon, and Washington." OR "The soil originated in a production site in which, on the basis of official surveys, Phytophthora ramorum is not known to occur." --------------------------------------------------------- Moving your roses across the border should be relatively stress free, provided you do you homework with ODA and the CFIA. I would stay right where I am here in Nova Scotia. I have the ocean right in front of me, the woods behind me and only one neighbor that can see my house without binoculars. I love that I can go for long walks in the woods and not be afraid of anything more than a big black bear. I love that I can jump in the car with the neighbor kids or grandsons and be at the beach swimming at a nice sandy beach within 15 minutes. I can walk down my lane and go to the beach to collect rocks or shells. When summer vacation time comes I always want to drive around Nova Scotia, sometimes up to Sussex, New Brunswick to go to Corn Hill Nursery, but for the most part I want to stay here. I love the trips to the Annapolis Valley and south shore, so much to see/sea. I have driven across this grand country twice by car, a long, long journey both times. Been right to Jasper in Alberta and out to Grand Cashe, beautiful area, but no ocean, gotta be near the water, it is the pisces in me I think.. Never been to the Rock, Newfoundland, but have intentions of going there someday. Flew out to Calgary last summer and was enchanted with the city, I hate cities for the most part but this place really caught my eye. My son lives there so I can see going out there again, it was a beautiful trip. If I had to change anything it would be the weather right now, bitter cold, I don't care for that. Otherwise home is where I hang my hat, I hope to be hanging my hat here for many, many more years. Just a humble little bungalow but it is my piece of heaven and my sancturary. Valerie

To start with this big project, first you need to know which kind of style you wanna buy or what's the style of your room. To get a good sit for your buck, you need to have several tests. Check the frame (sturdy frame with joints connected), Test the spring, Test the fabric ( Cotton and linen are winners). Hope my thoughts give you any ideas to focus on ya.

Sorry, but all that I know about U.S. residents moving to Canada you could stick in your eye.

And have room left over.

I think that it is rather difficult to obtain landed immigrant status, but somewhat easier for U. S. folks than for people from other places.

Sometimes it may be difficult for elderly people to achieve such, lacking a family member here who's willing to guarantee their care.

I think that one needs to be a resident for three mos. before one can obtain a health card. Some provinces make a charge, in some it's free. In Ontario we used to have a quarterly fee for our health card, then it was free for a while. The government of Ontario recently instituted a surcharge on income tax for health care.

That covers most doctor and hospital care that's pretty well necessary - not including face lifts, etc.

ole joyful, I was told that medications can be very expensive in Canada. For instance, my son who lives in BC has private health insurance to help with drug costs but says he still pays $250/month for a medication he needs that would otherwise cost him $500/month. This surprised me. I assumed that with universal health care (which I wish were here in the States), getting medications wouldn't be cost prohibitive to some people.

Do you know anything about this?

One way or another, most people in Canada do pay out-of-pocket costs for health care, even those wealthy enough to have private insurance. There are special programs for people with "catastrophic" drug expenses and specific conditions, but you have to find out how to access these. Seniors and social assistance/disability pension recipients generally have government drug plans. Health coverage varies by province.

About the challenges of immigrating to Canada, I read how the American actor Sharon Gless (remember the Cagney and Lacey TV show?) wanted to move to Canada but her application was denied on the basis that she didn't meet the criteria for "skilled worker".

Krustytop, that seems to be the problem with me. I went to their CA immigration website and took the 'points test'. I got plenty of points in every catagory, until I hit the 'worker skills points' catagory. They are looking for medical personnel and engineers mostly. I guess they already have enough bartenders. LOL. If I wait one more year I loose more points for my age again, and it becomes hopeless.

On a side note; I saw Danny Bonoduce (Partridge Family), live, in his stand-up comdey show once. He said he tried to get into CA and they denied him because of his drug convictions and sexual assault conviction. THEN, he said that they suddenly realized "who he was" and told him he could get in under their "rock star exclusion" policy. He made a joke about how he is a **Rock Star** in CA. I guess you can do whatever you want and still get into CA if you are rich enough.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew of any 'expatriot' type website discussion boards for Americans who went to CA.

From what I was able to find so far, it seems that most Americans prefer to retire to Mexico where the dollar goes further. There are a lot of small communities there, made up of almost entirely Americans, so speaking Spamish is not so important in those neighborhoods. The downside in Mexico, appears to be that obtaining any quality medical care, is either nonexistent or prohibitively expensive if you can find it. Something to consider when one get older.

Bud_Wi, what is your reason for moving to Canada. If you want to retire here and are not seeking employment then you need to contact Immigrations and fill out the applications. If you plan on working here than you must still contact immigrations and get a work permit and from there file for residency status.

If you have a ciminal record you application will be denied for work or residency or any type of status.

If you live close to the Canadian border just cross over and go the immigrations office at the border....they all have one and they can give you more detailed info on what you will need.

You can also come over on a visitors visa and check this out and this would give you the opportunity to verify the info that you need and make you decision afterwards for residency.

Be aware that as an American citizen you cannot come to Canada as a refugee........many have tried and failed.
