One great thing about retirement is...

... that every day is holiday.

Sure is nice to have the option of doing what one pleases.

(Single folks, that is).

Someone asked a while ago whether hubbie should retire at 55.

Some of us said that if he has enough strings on his violin that he won't get bored out of his mind, if wifie can stand having him around underfoot every day, and if they have enough to live on for 50 years, including counting on the erosion of the value of their assets due to inflation - to go for it.

My ex-, for a number of years head of food service at a major hospital, thought it wise to take early retirement when there was talk of closing her institution or a similar one in a nearby city. She figured that the golden handshake would likely be preferable to accepting a severance package on closing.

Had ten years to run around having fun, including, as a citizen of the U.S., spending from Christmas till March in FL - TX.

When she, dietitian, died - ironically, of colon cancer - our kids said that in the ordinary course of things, she'd have retired about a year earlier.

And I added that she'd have been ill for more than half of that year.

I do and sometimes strike up a conversation with a fellow waiting in line person. You'd be surprised how happy some of them are to share a thought with you. I think a lot of people go about just not having anyone to really talk to.

Hope your New Year brings the fulfillment of some of your good dreams - and the initiation of some new ones.

OK here it is: I found it, and I am pasting it here! Good luck with those nasty old olives!! hahahaha!! Unlike most other fruits, olives aren't fit to eat right off the tree. They contain a bitter-tasting and astringent glucoside. Since the glucoside is water soluble, soaking the fruits from four to seven days in water gradually gets rid of the problem. After the bitterness is gone, you soak the olives in brine for three to four days, then in vinegar for a minimum of three days. At this point they're ready to pack into canning jars. Curing Kalamata Olives Kalamata olive curing process From Chris Smith, Developed by Basil Papahronis, Pick olives when their color is red to purple and the texture is still firm. Avoid olives on the ground, unless theyÂve just been knocked there for picking ease. Minimize bruising by collecting olives in buckets containing water and not by knocking them to the ground. Â Rinse and clean olives with fresh water. Discard leaves, stems and any partially eaten (pecked by birds) olives. Also discard any prune-appearing olives (usually the result of dehydration) because they will result in a mushy olive after processing. Â Slit the olives lengthwise to the pit at least three times using a sharp knife or razor edge. While slitting, sort the olives into separate containers according to size and color. Process each of the sorted olives separately to produce a better-appearing final product. Processing can thus be tailored (longer or shorter water-soaking days) according to their respective degree of ripeness. Â Cover the slitted olives with tap water and allow them to soak for four to seven days. Change the water each day at least three times (morning, noon and night). The olive bitterness (a water-soluble glucoside) is removed by extraction and a slow process of glucoside diffusion into the water. The actual number of days required is best determined by tasting the olives after the fourth or fifth day. If the taste is still unpalatable, continue the water soak another day or two. Note: The firmer and greener the olive, the longer the soaking time required. Caution: The olives at this stage are susceptible to spoilage. Keep containers covered and clean and regularly change the water. Â When the bitterness is gone, soak the olives to cover in a 10 percent salt solution (1 pound salt in 1 gallon water). The olives will initially float because of the strong salt solution; they should be stirred at least once a day to work the floaters into the solution. As the olives absorb the salt, theyÂll gradually (in three to four days) cease to float. Since the salt acts as a preservative at this concentration, spoilage is not a risk, but proper sanitation practices should be maintained for maximum flavor quality. Â Drain the salt solution and refill the containers with enough water to just cover the olives. If you want, wash them again at this stage by draining off the first water addition to remove any sediment that may have accumulated in the container. Then just cover with water again. Add vinegar (1 pint for each gallon of olives) and stir well. Choice of vinegar is yours. (Papahronis prefers wine vinegar.) Stir once each day and allow three days minimum soak time. They are now ready for packing. The olives can be allowed to stand for up to seven to eight days before packing. If allowed to stand longer, a mold may form on the surface that can affect appearance and flavor, but it is not toxic. If this should occur, just drain and rinse with fresh water to remove the mold and pack into jars immediately. Â Package the olives by spooning them into jars (Papahronis uses 1-quart Mason jars). Work the olives down into the jars by gentle tapping to produce a more compact fill. Add into each jar the following: 1 heaping teaspoon salt, 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon oregano, 1/4 cup fresh wine vinegar, other spices of your choosing, 1/4 cup virgin olive oil, and water to complete filling to the top. (Note: Papahronis doesnÂt use garlic because it overpowers the natural olive flavors.) The vinegar-water mixture used for soaking the olives is drained; not used for the final packaging. Â Seal the jars and shake well to mix all the ingredients. Â Label and date for ease of identification. Â Store in a dark place for two to three weeks. The olives are ready to eat at any time after the salt soak stage, but the flavor improves with age up to three to four months before leveling out. Â Shelf-life of the packaged olives can be anywhere from two to three years. Keeping them longer is not recommended. Â After opening each jar, it may be refrigerated or kept ambient, depending on how long it will take to finish eating the remainder. Refrigerate if longer than two to three weeks.

Finally remodeled the kitchen in our 50s California ranch style house. Waited 18 years but it was worth the wait. Room is about 12 x 12, U shaped but the fourth wall has the fridge and some pantry space. BEST THING: repainting the original cabinets (creamy white, Benjamin Moore Pottery Barn Mascarpone) and hardware (that old black colonial stuff) to save $$ for top notch appliances. I replaced my old cheap wall oven & fridges in kitchen and laundry with a 48" Sub Zero. It is quiet and it is so flat -- I gained a wider walkway through my kitchen. Even though the fridge is smaller than the two fridges that it replaces, I can fit everything in there that I need (though now I understand the popularity of the "drink station" fridge!) I replaced my 42" avocado green cooktop with the La Cornue Cornufe 43" in Provence Blue with brass trim. I did not want to give up double ovens, but the usual Viking / Wolf etc. 48" would require me to give up too much cabinet space, plus I never liked the huge oven and tiny oven combo and cramming 8 burners into the space where I used to have four plus a big griddle (that I used to plop things down, mainly). Now I have 5 burners so I have room for big pots and handles. I was really nervous about having two smaller ovens. However, you get the half sheet pans from Williams Sonoma and they act as racks. The fitted roasting pans that come with the stove work fine. I roasted a big five bone prime rib in there. I use my ovens so much more now than I ever did before, especially for meats. That stove is a thing of beauty and a real show stopper in the kitchen. LOVE the blue. So YES, the appliances make all the difference. ALSO LOVE having everything look kind of old -- we have Carlisle wide plank hard wood in rustic white oak (knotholes and marks); we have Barroca soapstone with some white veining; my cabinets are not pristine but they fit with the overall look. Patina galore even with new things! GO CHEAP with the faucets and just get chrome. With everything else stainless, it's nice to have something more glittery on the countertop. We have chrome in every room with plumbing and all of the rooms "match" even though we have faucets from different manufacturers. Accidental benefit: We hid the trash can in a pull out inside one of the low cabinets. We just attached the door face to the pullout mechanism. Well, one of my undercounter cutting boards slides out perfectly so that I can chop and then sweep the trash directly into the trash can. Sweet! By getting the new fridge, I gained more countertop space to the right of the fridge. I was able to have a built in shelf made for my microwave to get it up off the counter. We converted one of the broom closets in the laundry room into a tiny little bar. We used a remnant from our countertops for the counter; we spaced shelves for wine and soda storage. My husband routered out a few leftover strips of the hardwood to make wine glass racks on the top of the cabinet. It's kind of cute. What I'd change? I don't dislike my Kitchen Aid dishwasher, but for some reason it is hard to load small things like pyrex bowls, small cereal bowls, etc. It is great for tons of plates and glasses. However, I like to cook and I use a ton of those little custard cups for prep. I store leftovers in 1c, 2c, 3c, bowls and they never seem to fit right. I did not get the dispenser on the Sub Zero because I think it will stay cleaner and also the dispenser takes up room inside. However, I do miss crushed ice more than I thought I would. I always dreamed I'd have a fancy backsplash behind the stove. However, this stove is so beautiful that I do not want to upstage it. I will just hang a pot rail behind it like you see so often in the ads for the stove. Also I did lose storage space -- we moved a hanging cabinet over the countertop peninsula. I lost my baking rack storage when I hid the trash can. I lost my pots and pans storage when I replaced my cooktop with the drop in stove. I have been getting rid of old things and making room for new things but I am still moving items around to figure out where they should go.

I like the border bearded, they tend not to to blow about as much. The small flowered "Conjuration" (which I LOVE!) must be staked, so it's not necessarily the size of the flower but how tall the stem is. This was an unusually rainy, stormy May so there was flower damage, but conversly, the rains brought cool weather which preserved flowers when it wasn't raining, so bloom lasted longer. I stalk almost all of my iris. YEs, I'm out there early in April feeling to see which plants are "pregnant" and then I watch obsessively for buds, and then I worry about storms, going in each morning to stake, then I often have to re-stake, and when bloom is complete it's time to remove stakes...and then I think about roses which I refuse to have becuase they are "too much trouble." yep. Who's crazy here?

Hope you all don't mind me popping in. I thought
retirement for my DH and me was the most wonderful thing in the world. We always said when we retired we were moving to a mountain in Arkansas and that is what we did. We worked harder than we ever did "working". But what glorious work. We moved in a mobile home,added a huge screened porch,regular roof and out buildings. Dug a well, septic tank, I've got city type water now. DH made a large veggie garden and i made raised flower beds all around our shady house. We camped in OK in early spring and fished for catfish. DH deer hunted in
the fall on our back 20acres joining the National Forest. Our 2 freezers were always full.

This lasted 15 yrs.without one regret,than my love,my DH passed 3yrs ago. Now i carry on untill i can join him.

Thanks for listening. Today is a hard day. My SIL died last nite in TX and because of weather I wont be able to go tell her goodbye.(funeral)

I guess i have a big case of "poor me". but gee everyone is leaving and leaving me behind.

Vickie, I'm so sorry to hear of your recent loss (of your sister)Don't worry about not getting to your sister. She knows and is carrying your love in her heart still as is DH.
there is still a lot for you to do so don't plan on leaving too soon. We are here even though the forum isn't too active. Have you visited The Kitchen Forum or the Sewing, Quilting, or mny other forums on the Home forum part of Garden Web. A lot of people to meet and have a cup of good cheer with.

Thanks Minnie for the link. I followed through and have injoyed these forums ever so much. One can not feel sorry for ones self long at the kitchen table. I also go to the pets and animal debates,and ozarks forums.

If you have any hobbies or even if you did but aren't active in them now there are a lot of craft forums including quilting and crocheting etc. Nice to read when you can't sleep at night!! On the Conversation side of the computer forum we play guessing games and they are fun come and sit a spell.. (when GW isn't slow as molasses tht is!!)

When something wasn't happening very quickly, one of my Dad's expressions was, "As slow as molasses in January".

And up here in the chilly realms - that was slow.

We had a part-barrel of molasses in our woodshed behind the house and sometimes, when the horse hay was especially dry, Dad would run some out into a pan, mix in some hot water, and spray it over the hay, to make it somewhat more palatable.

Don't remember whether I was ever accused of being that way - probably was.

We farm kids had lots of chores, cause the hired men went to war when it started, in '39 - when I was 10, and Dad had what in those days was quite a large farm. Kid brothers were younger, 7 and 5.

I'm strongly considering "retirement" for the very near future, and I'm (only) 52. Specifically, I'm considering leaving the high-stress occupation I've been in for the past 27.5 years. Not a formal retirement with annuity (I'd roll over the 401K into an IRA), just leaving my occupation.

But I'm not one to sit around, so I'll sign up for master gardener certification classes and maybe get a job in a bookstore or something else low-stress and enjoyable.... and be a financial burden to my DH.

A personal financial money management magazine here that carries no ads, is not slick and glitzy, had an article recently about a guy who retired at age 34.

He'd done so without bequests or other receipt of major outside asset, I gather.

Wrote a book, "Stop Working - Here's how *You* Can". So I guess he'll be making (a few) dollars from the sale of that (not from me, poor guy - [frugal] I borrowed a copy from the library).

He used to live in a resort on Georgian Bay (Great Lakes) but recently moved to a suburb of our capital city.

I agree with everything said here. I think that we have all, as individuals been collectively sold down the river to get to the point where we have to consider whether we should or should not retire, if we have enough money to do so. We were not ever meant to work most of our days away, most of our lives, simply to continue existing doing the same working in order to keep existing. I am 50 and have never married... I'm not too good socially. But I have saved enough money now to retire, I believe. And I will enjoy the rest of my life... I hope at least another 25 or 30. Even though I live without any love in my life, I have plenty of activites to keep my mind engaged and curious. Over the past year, I have read a lot of books on retirement and what can do in that phase of one's life. This site also gave me some ideas:

Not having to get up early in the morning to gulp down a hasty breakfast, then dash out into rush traffic. That traffic was getting meaner by the year just before I retired. Then at evening, having to endure the same traffic. Removing this stress has had a beneficial effect on my general health.

One great thing about retirement is to fulfill your dreams. Most people like myself work hard all their life for security to have enough to eat, live, survive and maybe put a few pennies in the bank for the future. I retired at 53 with a small pension and very little in the bank. I moved to the Dominican Republic from Canada and now have a new house, swimming pool, new wife; a baby girl and a baby boy do next month. IÂm now 66 years old and living life to the fullest.

... I think that I'd be choosing to go back to work!

Eating breakfast at any hour before noon.

Not having to drive into the sun in the morning and evening commute.

Not having to drive in the commuter traffic!!!

Avoidng the 'expressway' during the rush hour when it at times becomes a parking lot filled with surly drivers.

Shopping the big box grocery stores at 2 pm before the evening crowd arrives.

Having the freedom to visit a friend or relative within a 300 mile radius at a moments notice or whim during any part of the week.

Making daytime doctor and/or dental appointments.
