Simpson Doors

My contractor is not familiar with Simpson doors and was questioning whether their doors could withstand temperature variations. He is used to installing fiberglass doors. We are remodeling our cottage in Hawaii where you have humidity, rain, and heat and want an exterior door to withstand all kinds of weather. We have a small overhang so it won't get that much protection. Simpson's claim to have this "ultra block" on all 1 3/4 inch wood doors and it sounds like the doors would be pretty well protected. Probably not as good as fiberglass but they are prettier! Would appreciate any comments on Simpson or fiberglass doors. Thanks very much!

Moisture and heat are the number one and two enemies of wood. Wood swells when mointure is present. Wood expands when heated. There are finishes that can reduce those properties, but none to my knowlege that eliminate them.

A pretty door may deteriorate much more quickly.

Did you install the Simpson doors? How are they working? I live in Tennessee and in addition to humidity, rain and heat we also have cold. I do have a good overhang, but I am very firm about having a good seal around the door. Do you think the slide up and down bolt system(there is probably a better term) instead of a 3-point lock
is just as good for forming a seal?

I know this is old but I hope you find it.

Wood entry door recommendations- Simpson vs Pella

Has anyone had a wood door from Simpson or Pella? They are my two leading contenders to replace my front entry door. I am planning to put a storm door over the wood door. Pella doesn't honor their warranty with the use of a screen door. I can get the Pella door unfinished from Lowe's for just of $1000 and I think the Simpson door is going to be more. Simpson does honor their warranty with the use of a storm door though. The Simpson door slab weighs around 80 lbs which seems reasonable for my to handle for install and I am waiting to hear back from Pella on their door's weights. I was a bit spoofed on the weight issue when some of the wood doors I was looking at on Home Depot listed weights between 200 and 240 lbs. A bit much to handle and worried about the long term stability of my 2x4's holding such a beast. Any thoughts will be apreciated! Dave

Those doors look stained to me, already. They certainly arent a natural finish. Looks like a walnut, maybe.
