New stained wooden doors on existing white boxes?

The doors and doors of our kitchen cabinets were completely shot. However, we cannot afford to completely replace the cabinets. We have purchased new light shaker-style maple doors and drawer fronts. The wood is very nice quality. Our cabinet boxes are surfaced with a white laminate which cannot be removed. We thought about trying to paint the boxes to match the stained wood, but after trying a couple of colors I am not optimistic that plan will work to our satisfaction. We really like the wood and would like to keep it unpainted if we can. We have a light yellowish paint in our kitchen with white enamel trim and white ceiling.

We are now considering painting the boxes with a fresh white and mounting the nice wooden doors and drawer fronts (lightly stained and poly coated) on the white cabinets.

Will this look odd? What do you think?
