Brains and bodies, like muscles, need exercise

What do they say about muscles - "Use them or lose them"?

Seems to me that is true of bodies, as well. No exercise and they get out of shape.

And true of brains - keeping them up to speed and active delays deterioration, it seems to me. Slothful brains get sloppy from underuse, don't you think?

Good wishes for success in preserving your vibrant pursuit of many activities, interests - and new friends (to replace the ones that you lose through relocation or death.

You are so right about not using brains, muscles and bodies. Just in the short time that I have been retired, being that I don't write or read as much as I did before, I have noticed that I have to stop and think about how to spell certain words that I know I would have never had to even think about before now.
I do hope to continue to be active, though. I have many plans for the future and hope that I can carry them out.

Lu - and all,

There's an increasing number of old-timers around to build friendship circles with.

And the younger set, whose parents are too busy to have much time for them, need (substitute) grandparents, now that our actual grandparents often live at least hundreds, even thousands of miles distant.

Good wishes for keeping your mind, body and spirit as active as is possible without being detrimental.

Hi, Kate, Yeah, just a game. I was a bit tongue in cheek with my question, because it is often said that "only lefties are in their right minds", meaning that if you are right handed you are left brained and vice versa. In my case, that is not so. I expect there are bunches of us that challenge the old adage. When you need to replace some of your leggings/tights, you could try the kind that have a built in skirt. I personally don't like baggy/long shirts when I work out as they often get in the way. But, I also don't like my rear so exposed, especially b/c I often run an errand or two on my way home from working out. I now mainly wear tights with a built-in skirt. You really can't spot reduce. You have to lower your overall body fat, to get arm definition. I have VERY toned arms--unfortunately nobody knows that but me, because I need to reduce body fat. Many women do complain that their arms actually look larger after using weights to work the upper body. That is because their muscles are slightly larger, but their body fat is too high to show definition. I have been told by trainers that you need to reduce body fat to below 20% before you can really see arm definition. Now if you have low body fat and just want to work your arms--you michgt be interested in a workout called 'The power of 10" My friend is a trainer and a trainer she knows swears by it. (I also love it--and it would be great for a mom that doesn't have alot of time) Basically you lift weights/do body sculpting exercises--very slowly--each rep is 20 seconds -10 sec up and 10 sec down. You do 8 reps until you reach muscle failure. Muscle failure means that you are so fatigued, that you cannot manage to do another rep. THe entire workout takes 20 minutes and you only do it twice a week. It takes a few tries to get the hang of it and get figured out what exercises you want to do and what weights you want to use, but there is nothing like it... All you would need to do is buy the book. THere are several routines given in it for you to follow. I'm not affiliated with it. I just think the workout is awesome. Good Luck

and then there are those, that do "exercise type stuff", such as bicycling, just cause they enjoy it. Namely, me. I love riding my bike. People always say to me, you must be fit, you exercise all the time. Excuse me, I just ride my bike. Not my fault, that is an exercise for other people. LOL Honest, I know lots of people that ride a certain mileage weekly/daily, to stay fit. If they don't get that mileage in, they feel like they let themselves down. Me, I exercise, yes. Mine is a weight workout. I do it for my bone strength. I also walk this time of the year, mostly cause it is really to cold for me to ride. I do call the walking exercise. Mostly, cause I walk the same course, multiple times a week. Boring, just like my weight workout. But I do it, to keep in shape, and the walking, well bad substitute for my cycling cravings, but better than just sitting and letting the pounds accumulate. I know someone that exercises for 2 1/2 to 3 hours daily, but doesn't do any physical activity otherwise. To each it's own. My physical activity in the rest of the year (cept this really cold season) is yard work. Lots of it, including chasing my lawnmower through the yard, LOL, aka lawn mowing. Remember how, when you'd spent upwards of a week in bed due to illness ...

... you could hardly walk when you got your feet back on the floor?

Astronauts who've been weightless for a time find it hard to walk on their return.

Good idea to keep exercising not only the various parts of your body, but your brain and spiritual capacity, as well.

Plus family, social and community interests.

Don't go to seed, yet.

They have proven it does not do any good to use the brain like that. Brain cells die and that's it.

HI joyful, I googled it at a couple of sites. Our newspaper prints results of test and studies and my husbands company sends out a health newsletter with results also. I read about keeping the brain active with puzzles does not do any good. To bad because I keep mine very active.

I've always been a curious cuss ... and I figure that I'll just keep on keeping the brain busy, for my own enjoyment, if nothing else.

Even if it doesn't help ... but I'm not convinced.

OJ, I also enjoy doing brain things. I do Jigsaw puzzles, crossword and other things for my pleasure. I am very good at entertaining myself.

I believe studies have shown that physical exercise actually seems to prevent brain shrinkage. It isn't uncommon for the brains of dementia patients to be less than 60% of normal weight, with most of the loss in the temporal regions.

There are many kinds of dementia--almost 70, by some counts--and some are in fact reversible, such as those due to medications or undiagnosed illnesses.

You will lose mental AGILITY as you age; that is a proven fact. But you do not necessarily have to lose mental ABILITY. Recent studies have shown that older people have so much more to remember that they do, in fact, take a little longer to "pull out" a known fact out of memory.

Hi jkom ... that doesn't look all of those 51? years,

Sometimes it helps to rejig the memory if one sleeps on an issue that seems impenetrable today.

Or ... sometimes 10 minutes helps.

Someone told me that seniors have a delaying memory problem and I forget the term she used for it. It made sense to me because I forget a person's name and I can think of it.............5 minutes later. I live in a development of mostly seniors and the benefit of that is we are all forgetful and that makes me feel that my forgetfulness is normal. LOL
