Tyler Texas Area

My husband and I are looking at areas of the country we might like to retire to in a couple of years. One of the areas we are considering is the Tyler area. Can anyone share some of what you know with us? We hope to get to take a trip there next year to look the area over. Thanks in advance for any info you can share.

I've only been in that area once but it is a lovely place and a lot of local activities. There, or near there, is the Texas Shakespeare theater. I'd send a link but just deleted some links the other day.

I think one of the home shows on TV built a model home hear there.

Hi Minnie thanks for the quick response. You are right about HGTV building their home in Tyler, had forgotten but did hear about that. Thanks so much for the info. A Shakespeare Theatre sounds wonderful. I know they have beautiful roses too, which happens to be one of my loves.

"Roses are usually sold as two-year-old, field-grown plants. They are graded according to vigor and size. The main grades are 1, 1 1/2 and 2. Number 1 grade is the largest, and each succeeding grade represents slightly smaller plants. The size of top grades will vary with variety, but always select only the top grade available for the desired variety. A number 1 grade will have at least 3 canes approximately 3/8" in diameter. Most nurseries handle only 1 and 1 1/2. These grades normally are worth the extra investment. They produce more vigorous plants with abundant flower production."Bargain" roses, sold at extremely low prices, are often culls from the growing field and are below the grading standards for the lowest grade. Extreme care in selection is advised. They are not generally a bargain." To the above I might add that all #1 grade roses are not equal. There are subgrades in each category. Jumbo and large are two #1 subgrades. I've looked closely at the descriptions on many bagged roses and you have to be careful to understand the way they are worded. Some say first grade or top grade. That does not nesessarily mean #1 grade. Many roses that qualify for #1 grade status are so heavily damaged in harvesting or stored in less than prime conditions that they produce nothing but blind growth or have to be pruned so heavily, many of the canes have to be completely removed. The bagged roses sold in most big box stores come from the Tyler Texas area. This area has a number of smaller family owned growers who sell their roses through a co-operative. The quality varies greatly and most of the really good quality plants are quickly bought up by the better large mail order suppliers. The culls, some of which narrowly meet the various grading standards, are packaged and sold cheaply to the big box stores. I've yet to open a bagged rose and find a good root system. This is the root system I've found on a typical bagged rose. I've not done anything to it, that's the way it was coming out of the bag. It was purchased just prior to giving a rose program and opened in front of a large group to demonstrate why one shouldn't purchase a bagged rose. Although my experience with boxed roses is better, to get the roots neatly into those boxes, they are severely chopped off. The only plus for them is while in transit and sitting on the store shelves they manage to grow a few feeder roots. If planted in such a way as to not disturb the roots these feeder roots can help get the boxed rose off to a decent start.

Actually ....Tyler is known as the Rose capitol because it IS the Rose Growing Capitol of the USA - not just because of all of the rose growers....check out the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden's online site...they grow hundreds of varieties of roses, and are a big tourist attraction... ...as far as quality roses, it depends on which grower they come from. Many grow roses only to ship to Walmart and other discount stores -these are usually #2 roses. Having lived in Tyler for over 25 years now, I usually purchase mine direct from the growers.. you may want to look for Tyler Rose Nursery to see if they have a website for ordering.... as far as retail nurseries, Chamblee's is a great choice, also check Harris, Breedlove's and Thompson-Hill's nurseries. Madame Galen Tumpet vine...where to find

Any ideas on a less aggressive vine that is or nearly evergreen and blooms more than just in the spring? As someone into my third year of eradicating trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) sold as Madame Galen (Campsis x tagliabuana) forgeries, I strongly suggest you be very careful of the source OR consider Coral Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) as an alternative. We've had proper Madame Galen in the past that were well mannered, but don't think I'll ever consider chancing it for an urban fence again after this most recent experience. L. sempervirens has advantages of being much less aggressive AND evergreen. It's also available in several colors. Major Wheeler is a very nice red variety that is already blooming in our yard. Only tradeoffs versus Trumpet Vine that I can think of are that it will need more help getting to the top of the fence and, while drought resistant, it does not put down the kind of 5+ ft deep roots that campsis radicans puts out. One removed last week went straight down and was longer than my shovel. C. radicans is no doubt tougher, but of course, that's why it is taking me years to get rid of it. Love Blue Moon also but it is pricey. Hughes Plant Farm between Tyler and Jacksonville on Highway 69 has very reasonable prices but not necessarily the most sought after plants. Lots of folks go there, though. Parking lot is usually full during Spring.

I live in the Dallas area. The Tyler area has a lot going for it. The cost of living is low, it is a pretty area with lots of trees, the weather is mild.

The only negative I can think of is that I have heard from people that are from that area that it is cliquey. The people living there are very friendly, but they tend to stick togeather and not make friends with new people.

I heard this from a couple people from that area. I was interested because my husband has also expressed interest in posibly retiring there.

The Austin area is also nice, have you looked at it also?

Hi HappyLadi, Yes we did consider Austin area. but from everything we have been told it is way to crowded. We are also considering Hot Springs Ark. but again I have been reading that it has grown so much that lots of people think it is losing its charm.

It would be nice if you could drive down and take a look at both places. My youngest DS Loved Hot Springs. Try and see itf they have an active Senior program in both cities. It is a good way to spend time, meet people and stay active.

DS and I will probably drive down the end of June for a Coin show and then stop at Rudy's for a rack of Ribs. I'll see if any brochures are available and let you know.

The Shakespeare theater is in Kilgore, not far from Tyler. You also have Marshall close by which has a fantastic Holiday light show and not too far from Shreveport.

Or ... does the law enforcement guy have only one "l" at the end?

Seriously ...

... I've heard that if you consider moving to an area when you are free to choose your roosting place, e.g. retirement, that you go there and rent for a year or so, to learn what the place and people are like before you make the serious commitment of buying.

Sounds like a good idea.

Come on down here and you will love it.The people are friendly and in the area I live in we have lots of things for seniors to do.There are clubs of all kinda and the weather is hot in the summer,but i would rather have 3 months of heat than 9 months of cold.

I'm Retired but have never been to this forum.Someone told me to check ot your posting because I live in Tyler,Tx.Born and bred.It is a beautiful city known for growing roses a chief industry.Also Azaleas grow well here and in the spring there is an Azalea Trail in some of our older established neighborhoods.People come from all over to see the roses and azaleas.Our town is popular for retirees due to mild witers but of course very hot summers.There is an outstanding medical community and many recreational facilities.If I can tell you more, email me privately.Gabriell
