1/2hp Craftsman Garage Door Opener

We have a house built in '99 with a Craftsman Door Opener that came with the house, we bought the house in '03.

Recently the we have had problems where when we try to close the door the door stops after about 1-2 feet of travel then returns to the open position. The light flickers indicating a malfunction.

I have checked the sensors. Both sensors have strong/bright green lights.

WE have noticed what we think is excessive slack in the chain.

Could the chain be dragging causing the door not to close porperly?

We do not have any problem with the door opening, that oepration is smooth.

If the door starts down and reverses to the open position and the main light flashes 10 times you have a door sensor problem. If the door starts down and reverses to the open position but the main light doesn't flash you have a problem with the RPM sensor. The RPM sensor is a small circuit board near the front of the motor. It's job is to reverse the door when the door hits something. If it fails it will do its job when it shouldn't. I don't know what flickering light you are referring to but it could help if it is flashing a code. If it flashes 5 times and pauses then repeats it is the RPM sensor.

Random flashing of that LED is normal but it can sometimes send a signal when there is a problem. It will flash a number of times, pause and then repeat. It sounds like you may possibly have two problems involved here. On the rear of the motor unit you will find a control marked 'down force.' Increase this just a bit. On the side of the motor unit you will find a control marked 'down limit.' Turn this a bit in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking will be necessary. Both of these problems can be intermittent.

I don't know what you are lubricating or what kind of door you have but if you are lubricating the rails of a sectional door you should quit and clean up all the stuff. This could be the cause of your problem. If this doesn't help you really need to call a door technician.

Take off the cover and I am sure you will find the drive gear is bad. You can replace it. A new one comes with instructions.

Do you have power at the receptacle? Plug a lamp in to see. You must be able to follow the 110 volts to the opener to see where you are losing it. Do you have a meter?
