Length of pension

My dad is 85. Retired 20 yrs ago with pension. Think he gets 50% of salary but he has survivor benefits so it continues on for spouse. What was his expected life span when he retired? 10yrs or less? So he has lived 2x longer than expected?

The length of Pension depends on what you have paid for. mostly, it is until you die.

my point was you retire, get pension for 5 yrs and die. company is happy they dont have to pay you anymore. actuary says you will live for XX yrs. same as govt SS money. but govt has no piggy bank. they pay with money coming in. maybe companies do the same thing. pay pension with operating income.

Let me be sure I understand the situation correctly: You have the option of withdrawing $60,000 from your husband's retirement account, and paying taxes on it, in exchange for which you will receive $500/month for life. Or you can leave the $60,000 there, tax-free, and ultimately withdraw it and its earnings. My first observation is that because of the tax factor, $60,000 isn't $60,000. I'm going to guess that that withdrawal will certainly put you in the 25% tax bracket, so you'll pay an additional $15,000 in taxes on the $60,000. So the question is whether you should pay $75,000 in order to get a payment of $500/month for life. Well, $500/month is $6,000/year, which is 8% of $75,000. So the question comes down to this: Would you rather earn 8%, fixed rate, for life, or would you rather take your chances with your own investments? The answer depends on three factors, none of which you can decide for yourself: 1) How much do you care about the size of your estate? Alternatively, how much difference is there between "for the rest of your life" and "forever?" You may think that there is no difference, but that's not true if you have heirs, nor is it true if you still have the option of spending that money near the end of your life if you need it. 2) How confident are you that you can earn more than 8% over the long term? The answer depends both on things you can control (i.e. how you invest the money) and things you can't control (i.e. how the economy will do in the future). 3) How much of a problem will it be if you can't earn the 8% you expect? Once you know the answers to these questions, you can figure out what to do. My personal opinion is that it is not an obvious decision, and you could not be faulted for going either way.

Hi again dolcemia, I am pleased that your husband has a retirement plan ... and that you have one, as well. At what age can you begin to draw on them? Usually they are set up to begin at age 65 ... can you choose to begin drawing before that? For example, in Canada, the Federal pension, to which we all contribute, which began over 40 years ago, intends to have us retire at 65, with full pension (if we made full rate of contributions ... which you don't, if you earn anything near minimum wage, meaning that low income hurts, even into retirement). If I choose to retire earlier, they won't allow me to do it before age 60, and for each 2 months that I retire before age 65, they reduce my pension by 1% ... which means 6% per year, and if I chose to retire at age 60, there would be a 30% reduction. On the other hand, if I choose not to retire until after age 65, I get a bonus of 1% for each 2 months extra that I work and contribute, 6% per year. Is your pension set up so that as inflation continues over the years, does the amount of your pension increase, as well? If there is a provision for it to increase due to inflation, it's almost certain that it won't increase at the same rate as the rate of inflation, but less ... which means that it won't cover as many expenses as the years go by as it would earlier. They call that a pension being indexed for inflation. Is your husband's pension indexed to inflation? ______________________ Do you owe money on credit cards, that you don't pay in full each month when the bill arrives? Is it/are they mainline cards, or cards issued by stores? Do you know what rate of interest that you pay on those unpaid balances? Usually on mainline cards it's about 15 - 18% annual rate. Usually on store-issued cards it's up around 25 - 28% annual rate. If I loaned you $100. and said that you owed me $25. per year for the use of it, would you consider me some kind of rascal? May I ask you a question ... have you heard the saying, "A penny saved is a penny earned"? Do you believe it? If you say that you agree, I'd like to disagree, in terms of much of the stuff that, when you buy, you might be able to save a dollar on the purchase. When you consider most of the stuff that you buy ... when you prepare your income tax, can you deduct the price of it as you calculate the amount of tax that you owe? For much of the goods that most of us buy ... the cost is not deductible. Which means that we have to buy it using money that we've already paid income tax on, i.e., after-tax money. Let's suppose that you could save $1.00 on a purchase that you make. If you're in 25% marginal tax rate (i.e. the rate of tax that you pay on your top dollar of income), that means that you have to earn $1.33 before-tax, then pay 33 cents tax, leaving yu with $1.00 in hand to go out to buy that item. So .. if you save $1.00 on the cost of the purchse ... you've saved $1.333 of extra earnings, right? Plus... if you pay that 28% on a store-issued credit card, most of the things that you bought when using it were not tax-deductible, right? Which means that, if you're in 25% income tax rate, you have to earn $36.00 pre-tax income, then pay the 25%, or $9.00 income tax, leaving you with $27.00 ... oh,oh ... not quite enough to pay that $28.00 owing. Drat!! When you buy a car (or do you lease) do you pay cash for it, or do you finance it? If finance, do you shop around to find the best rate of interest and terms? Are you a member of a credit union, or are there some in your area? Sometimes they offer lower rates, or better terms, than the usual market offers. Do you try to pay the loan off as soon as possible? I recommend that. Be sure to pay off the loan quite a while before you need to replace the car. Then keep putting away that amount of money (or nearly as much) each month, building a fund to enable you to make a far larger down payment on the next car. It would be best if you can pay the full cost in cash ... that lets you put the amount of interest into your own pocket that you'd been paying earlier to a lender. I like keeping my money in my jeans over paying others to borrow theirs. Do you have an emergency fund? That is, if you had no family income for 3 months (or, even better, 6 months ... or, better yet, a year) would you have anough money available that you would still be able to live fairly comfortably? It's important to have such an emergency fund, in case unexpected expenses crop up ... including if we get laid off from work, especially if permanently, as your husbnad is dealing with at the moment. I recommend learning how money works - it's an interesting hobby. And, know what? It pays well ... very well. As I said earlier .. pay off your store-issued credit card balances fully when they come in each month ... save yourself 35%. And that saving is ... guaranteed. Usually the owner of the money gives a pot of money now, or makes regular payments over a period of time, to usually an insurance company, in exchange for a benefit that the insurance company offers. The insurance company agrees to begin paying a specified amount to that person, beginning at a certain date and, often, continuing for the rest of the person's life. Or, at a lower rate of regular payout, to include a surviving spouse. However ... some people found that the original owner of the money often died within a few months of beginning to receive the annuity ... and that was the end of the contract: the full amount paid was kept by the insurance company (except for the small amounts paid out). One financial advisor that I knew had a client over 80, with no dependents, that considered buying an annuity (i.e. was in the process of being sold an annuity by an agent). He, cancelling another appointment, travelled some distance to meet with the two, and when he asked how much of a benefit there would be if the lady died in a couple of months, was told that there was no such provision in the proposed agreement. Many people who were much younger than that lady, when considering a proposed contract, didn't like that idea, so there's an option available for the original purchaser to have a provision in the contract where the payout period will be for his/her life but, should s/he not live long after the payout begins, the annuity will continue (at a reduced rate) for a 10, or 15 year, or other length, period. The rates that insurance companies offer regarding annuity payout lebvels usually bear some connection with current interest rates. When rates are high, often the rates of payout offered by annuities are higher than average, but usually not comparable. When rates are low, as they have been lately, payout rates offered are usually low. The reason being that the insurance company has guaranteed to make payouts at predetermined levels, but don't have certainty as to how much they can earn on the invested assets in the meantime. The insurance company doesn't give a guarantee to make a level of payout that is going to hurt them in the end. In the case of life insurance, the owner of the policy bets that s/he's going to die prematurely, when some non-employable dependents require an income for them to live on for a number of years, but leaving no one to provide it. The insurance company bets that the buyer of the life insurance is going to live to an advanced age, paying premiums throughout. The insurance companies are the ones with the actuaries. In the case of an annuity, the buyer is betting that s/he is going to live for a long time ... collecting that annuity payment regularly through to, say, 104. And the insurance company bet that s/he's going to die before they've paid out a bucket of money in total to that person. And if they're covering a spouse, as well, or have given a guarantee that they'll continue paying for, say 10 years, even if the owner dies a month after payout begins ... the amounts of the regular payout the the company is willing to offer is lower. As their risk is greater. I confess to a bias against insurance companies' practices, largely because they marketed whole life insurance policies for ages, telling ofthe great value in having some value build up in the policy over the years. But, in order to collect that "extra value" ... ... the owner of the policy pretty well had to arrange to be alive and dead at the same time. For many, who want to spend some time learning how money works, and are not going to get all bent out of shape if the value of theri assets drops for a while when there are corrections in the equity markets, I think that they can likely do better investing on their own, if they do it skilfully. For quite a long time, I said that no one cares as much about your money as you, so it's wise to learn how to manage it well. But in recent years I've changed the tune somewhat, to ... no one cares as much about your money as you ... except some folks that would like to shift some (most? all?) of it from your pocket ... ... into theirs. With regard to your current situation, does your advisor work for a company that offers only a limited variety oif investment vehicles, or can s/he offer a wide variety of types of investments? When I went to the downtown (London ON) branch of TD Can Trust a couple of weeks ago to attend a seminar on investments, I asked at the information desk where the seminar was to be, to be told that it was just over in the corner of the main office, where people were visiting the tellers and there was a shelf in the corner holding a monitor and a semicircle of folding chairs set up. I leaned a bit toward the lady and asking rather conspiratorially, "Do you know what's a better use for your money than putting it in the bank?" When she asked what, I said, "Buying bank shares!". Both of the women within earshot laughed heartily, aloud, and said, "That's for sure!". You can buy Canada Savings Bonds, that, after a few months, can be cashed at any time - producing a rather low interest rate, usually. I don't know what income tax situation you're in, but there are three major ways to pay top rate of tax - employment income, or the subsequent pension, or earning interest. I don't like earning interest, largely for that reason. Have you considered who gets hurt by inflation? The bank doesn't - they bring in a dollar and lend out about 8 on the strength of that dollar. Suppose, liking their guarantee that they'd repay every dollar that you loaned them, plus rent on the money (interest), you loaned them $10,000. on a 5 year guaranteed certificate, fifteen years ago and had renewed it twice, since. There's another guarantee that they never mention - apart from the rent on the money (interest), they won't pay any more dollars than they borrowed, either. Fifteen years ago, your $10,000. would have bought a fairly decent car. Not now. Cars and almost everything else have increased in price. There are two rats that eat your cheese - Canada Revenue Agency wants to talk to you annually about every dollar of current income (though they tax some kinds of income at lower rates than others). In most cases - they want part of that income. The other rat? Inflation. If the asset that you have in exchange for the dollars that you parted with a while ago can't grow, you must move part of your current income, roughly the rate of inflation, from the "current earning" category into the "asset" category, in order to keep your purchasing power intact. Otherwise, though the number of dollars in your asset stays stable, each dollar won't buy as much as earlier. At current interest rates, by the time you deduct your tax amount owing and the rate of inflation - there's very little remaining as current after-tax income, after allowing also for the erosion of inflation. On the other had - if I borrow that $10,000. from the bank, which I'll only do to purchase an asset, not to subsidize current living expenses, after I've paid their required rent on the money (interest) on an interest-only current payment, I owe them, after whatever number of years - the same $10,000. that I borrowed. If I was half-way shrewd, and bought an asset that increased in value by enough to pay the ongoing interest plus $12,000., I had at least the opportunity of gaining from inflation. We can talk more later, as this is long already and I need to meet my son, 15 km. away, mainly through city traffic, in about 6 min. Good wishes as you plan what to do with your money. I would bet that there's a lot of variation in how employers handle their pensions, and you are not going to get a one-size-fits-all answer. You'll have to go to the specific plan. Note that plans can and do change how plans are administered as they go along, too.

A true "old fashioned" pension did not require employee contributions; it was funded entirely by company funds. IRS rules are quite specific on how a pension fund is set up and managed. There are many restrictions on what the funds can be invested in.

When 401k accounts were instituted, companies saw the opportunity to terminate these pension accounts, which required them to set aside considerable cash reserves that couldn't be utilized for anything else.

IBM was the test case for employees who felt they had been scr$wed by the pension fund terminations (which was true). The company won, and now less than 30% of US businesses offer a pension plan.

What most companies offer is a combination of 401k accounts (funded by employees, sometimes matched by a small percentage from employers) and insurance purchased on the employee's behalf by the company. Because the latter are simply the purchase of a standard deferred payment annuity (usually payable starting at age 65), the company has no requirement to set aside funds.

However....the fact that your father's pension is 'assignable' argues that it is in fact one of the actual pensions, not an annuity policy. Both work on the same basic principles: aggregation (of premiums) and compounding (which grows exponentially greater over time).

Yes, your father has lived a longer than expected life. But when a retirement plan or insurance policy is aggregated over thousands of employees, the math changes. A great many people leave a job before they are vested, either voluntarily or through termination, which frees up those funds. Of the approximately 20% remaining: some will take a lump sum (much less costly for the company), some will not. Some will choose a reduced benefit (assignable) and some won't.

And of that 20%, half will die before age 73 and half will live longer. How much longer, and how many of them will still be alive after 5, 10, 15, 20 years? That's the "X" factor - the unknown that actuaries can only guess at, and why they pay attention to short-term statistical studies that show how mortality/morbidity is trending.

The factor of COLA/non-COLA also needs to be considered (annuities, for example, are almost always non-COLA). Even a generous COLA is considered to be 2-3% maximum - usually well under what most institutional accounts earn through investments.

He did work for IBM. 33yrs. Mom worked for mayo clinic for 40 yrs and still complains about feeble medical benefits. Dad has health issues but mom is rock solid. Never been sick a day in her life. I went to mayo clinic a lot. Talk about a machine. School buddy was CFO for a bit. He left to head some hospital system in another state.

My husbands pension was until he died, then it was transferred to me. He took a loss to do that for me.

Interesting discussion--especially since my DH just retired this past Thursday (at age 62).

From what I've seen, yes, the set up can vary from company to company. Dsis worked for a company that went out of business (it was actually bought up and bankrupted by a very large national company so they could take a tax loss). She was in her 40s when that happened, had worked there since she was 17. Thanks to a class action suit, she got a one-time payout of about $16,000 in lieu of the pension she should have gotten (she was in management, at one point she was the highest placed woman in the entire company). So she gets no pension from them. She works at the Post office now. And will get only 1% of her salary for each year she's worked there. Since she's only going to be able to put in 10-15 years before retirement age, that's going to be next to nothing.

Daunt, on the other hand, worked for a company that ended up going belly-up, too. It changed hands a few times before that happened. In her case, each 'company' she worked for (even though she held the same job, management just changed every few years) took out an annuity for her. She ended up with 4 of them. 3 died with her, one was bequeathable--so I'll be receiving $100 a month for the rest of MY life (since I doubt I'll make it to 2042) and can bequeath it to someone of my choosing.

Now, DH is getting the standard, old-fashioned company pension. He contributed nothing to it--it was part of his salary/benefits. There were 4 tiers--one where he'd get a larger amount, but I'd get nothing if he died before me. Then there were 3 choices where he'd take a lower amount, and I'd get something after he died. I think we decided upon the 75% option (I get 75% of his pension, if I'm left behind).

Of course, we have to see exactly what the final #'s are from his pension and SS, but it looks as if, between his SS, mine, my annuity and his pension, we'll be making the same amount with him retired, as he was making working! Does't pay for him to keep working! (and spending close to $100/week to commute).

As I understand it, there are regulations that insure that the money is appropriately invested and secure. DH's company is one that has traditionally had their pentions OVERfunded--which is fortunate.

Yes, it's a bit of a gamble that the company takes--like insurance. When their former employees (or their spouses) live long lives, they take a bit more of a hit than if they die young, but that's the deal. And I'm sure the numbers still work out in the company's favor.

The sad, sad thing is that our children won't get to collect pensions. Most of them will have to continue working until they physically cannot get out of bed in the morning. It's a shame.

Interesting subject.

Right now I'm close to retirement and I am trying to decide on my pension choice. Should I take the lump sum or the monthly annuity? What did retirees do and are you happy with your choice?

We didn't have a lump sum option. We had 4 levels of pension--one where the payments were highest, and would die with DH (I'd get nothing if he predeceased me). Next step down, he'd get a lower amount, and I'd get half of that. 3rd step, lower payout still, I'd get 75%. Lowest payment for him would mean payments would stay the same after his death. We chose the 75% option.

Does your employer offer instructional seminars that explain your options? Or a dept. you can contact to discuss the various opportunities, their advantages/disadvantages? HR was extremely helpful in answering all our questions--both while we were in the planning stages, and while we were actually filling out all the reams of paperwork required.

I don't think it's easy to answer your question--not without numbers. How large is the lump sum? How many years of pension payments would it represent? How would you be investing the lump sum? How would getting a lump sum affect your tax liability at the end of the year (if you have to pay income taxes on it when you get it, that's going to significantly reduce the amount right away).

But that was the life expectancy for a male born that year. The life expectancy for someone of retirement age (65) back in 1992 would have been something like 14 or 15 more years. It's around 20 years right now.

If you take a lump sum, can you roll all of it into a personal retirement account with no or minimal income tax consequences? Or can you roll a major portion into such a personal retirement account and take out some with low level of tax?

If it would be putting it into an annuity, whether to begin paying soon or delayed, I'm somewhat unhappy with that option, given the current economic situation, for the rate of payout on annuities is usually related to current interest rates on invested money, and interest rates these days are lousy. That's causing a major reduction in lifestyle of many seniors who'd followed the usual financial advice to invest in bonds, GICs, etc. when one is older and can't afford to have one's asset eroded by drops in the equity markets.

I've written posts elsewhere on this and other forums about some ways that one should view one's non-pension related assets at 65 or so.

Good wishes for some skilled information available (lacking the inherent conflict of interest involved when one is counselled by a salesperson who depends for income on commissions on sales of financial products) available as you make your decision(s).

ole joyful ... who, over 80, is pleased that he has assets that he doesn't plan to use till 95 or so still invested in quality equities, that he expects to maintain their value, given a time horizon of 10 years or more
