It depends on a few things. Do you have other furniture yet? How big is the room? Do you need to use the room as a guest room on occassion?

When my oldest was small, he had a smaller bedroom so we got a trundle bed so we could set his room up with two twins if we had guests. He loved to "camp" on our floor if grandma and grandpa were using his room. The trundle was great when he was a bit older and had sleepovers too.

I think you would be smart to use a mattress on rails until you find a bed you like. Your daughter is young enough not to care and it gives you more flexibility on how to situate the bed in the room. Have you seen those cute wall stickers that represent a headboard? There are some really cute ones.

when my oldest transitioned from a crib, we put a twin mattress on the floor for awhile before finding a twin bed. At 3, she'd probably be fine with just a crib mattress on the floor while you're deciding.

I think that's a great idea. I would just use rails, and add "big girl" bedding. You might find something cute and cheap on craigslist, and paint it a bright color. I bet she's gonna be a happy girl! (Cute room in photo above, but I wouldn't put a t.v in it - JMHO.)

LuAnn, I agree with you that a girl's room can be any color. My daughter's room is a tan/khaki color. We accessorize with color.

gmp3, We don't need to use the room as a guest room. It is strictly her bedroom. It is not very big (I can get measurements later); actually, it is quite small. There are bookcases (expresso) in there but I am not married to them. I purchased a cute pink nightstand at HomeGoods a few weeks ago. I plan on having a twin bed, bookcase, and a nightstand in the room. She will also get a lil table with 2 chairs.

Fun2behere, I have seen those wall decals and just went to Land of Nod to see if they still had the ones that looked like iron wrought and they don't. I am so sad!!! That is such a good idea.

I am going with the idea of just putting the bed up and getting the headboard/footboard later. I was worried that the mattress would slide around on box springs or the rails wouldn't be strong enough to support but I need to get over that.....it is time to get my precious daughter out of my room :)

Wrought iron headboards, particularly if you just want a headboard, not a footboad, can be had very inexpensively.

When we did DD2's room, she wanted two twin beds. I wanted it to feel airy and open so I wanted distressed off white "wrought iron". I just googled till I found inexpensive ones (assuming wed change them all too soon),

Sounds like you have a fun project ahead of you; I know I enjoyed redoing my dd's room when she was about that age. :-)

You mentioned that Land of Nod was no longer carrying the headboard decals--but a quick Google Images search of "headboard decal" will bring up a bunch of possibilities (see link below).

Yes, having it on the rails until you find what you like is a good idea. Also, be careful about how HIGH the mattress will be on a bed frame. My daughter's is much higher than when it was on basic rails. She was 7, I think, so could leap up there! Not so easy for a 3 yr old.

I bought a black frame because her tastes are bold :) This is right after getting the bed set up. The top of her mattress is 28". My son's, on regular rails, is 20".

I'm having the same dilemma. My dd just turned 2, but has been out of her crib for quite some time. She has been on a twin mattress on the floor.

We're switching rooms around because we're getting an au pair, so I will be redoing the guest room to be dd's room, and her current room will become the au pair's room.

Her crib converts to a full, but it's pretty nice furniture. I don't know if trust a toddler with that nice bed frame.

Have you thought about making a headboard, like with a picket fence headboard, perhaps? Rails with a mattress and box spring might be too high, but Ikea has low platform beds that seem a little more kid friendly. If you did go with the box spring option, you could probably get a rail for the side to keep her from falling out of bed.
