Replacing 9 foot doorway with 6 foot...header?

There is a double 2x10 header over the current 9 foot doorway opening. It is a 6 foot door with sidelights. I am installing in its place a 6 foot doorway on one side of this header.

The problem is that the door is 4 inches taller in the middle (door is arched and went from 6'8" tall to 7 feet tall). I would like to cut a curved notch out of the existing header that will be about 2 inches into this header. My thinking was that I only need a double 2x8 header over this new span so I should be able to cut into it up to 2 inches which would still give me that 2x8 dimension.

So would this fly with an inspector? Putting in a new header is a major job as the ceiling and exterior area would need to be ripped up too.
