Hardness of granite vs. quartz -Test!

I didn't pay much attention when the quartz companies said they quartz counters were harder than granite. I though well, it's so hard to scratch granite anyway that it's not much of a selling point. Well that's not true. Just for the heck of it I took the sharp corner of some quartz samples and not trying all that hard put some pretty good scratches into Nordic Black, Antique Brown, and Uba Tuba. I was really surprised as I never thought granite could scratch like that.

I took the same piece and did the same to another of my quartz samples and nary a mark. I was really surprised. Granite might have more richness and depth but it's not so pretty when it gets scratched up over the years. I don't know if it can be repolished in place.

It was a bit of an eye opener for me. Quartz counters really are harder than granite!
