Ever add up. . .

Have you ever added up or figured out how much you save on a weekly basis using Senior Citizen/AARP discounts?

I've never paid attention to them because I don't qualify but what are some good deals you get by being "of a certain age?"

It really doesn't amount to much for us. Most of the fast food places give a Senior Citizen discount or a free drink with the order. Some Resturants have a senior discount or menu with smaller portions. AARP kicks in at an earlier age than the SC discount. You can't get both.

Both of my favorite supermarkets give a SC discount on Wednesday. I don't get it because I like to either get my groceries on Saturday or Monday. It varies from 2 to 5 % of the total purchase. They don't honor AARP at all. Some department stores have regular SC days, and I would save a bundle if I planned ahead and waited for them. But I don't.

All motels that we use give the same amount either for AARP or for SC. We had AARP for years and years but never came across anything that would give AARP a better deal than the regular Senior discount. I guess it would depend on how active the Senior Citizens group was in that area.

For the first few years, if we wanted the SC discount, we had to ask for it. Now the wrinkles and gray make the age statement for us.

We get extra homestead exemption on property taxes. It's a good one too!! That, and the extra exemption on both Federal and STate income tax, is the biggest goodie of them all. I don't think we would ever eat out enough for the resturant discounts to amount to much. The savings at the supermarket would add up to about 200 a year, IF I could wait and buy everything at once on Wednesday. Never gonna happen, not in this life!! LOL

We don't qualify for SC discounts yet. AARP, if I recall, membership is $10/yr. for the two of us. Last weekend we saved $16/day on hotel rooms. We also have AAA and were eligible for the same discount through them so it was an either/or situation. We do normally try to pick hotels/resorts/rental car agencies that partner with our airline so we get frequent flyer mileage also. If we use a specific credit card, we can get those miles doubled and sometimes tripled through airline and credit card specials.
I know this was a bit off topic but it just came to mind as something else to consider.

Ever just give up? Yep! I did last summer. We had two smallish ponds connected by a short stream with Koi and Goldfish in one and Guppies and Bettas in the other. Water lilies, cattails and other planty things abounded in and around the ponds. I cannot count how many times the ponds needed to be emptied, the plants rinsed off, repotted and otherwise resuscitated after our dog Daisy would finish her rescue attempts of those poor drowning plants and baskets. Many plants were shredded beyond hope. Water lilies really should not sun themselves on the lawn but Daisy did not understand this concept. The final straw was after a raccoon tipped everything over while fishing for the fish. There were only about 6 guppies left from all the fish. I did not only cry. I sobbed! I took out the surviving fish, emptied the pools of death and filled the site with soil and planted some lovely sun loving perennials and a flowering crabtree. We still have the little 3000 gal. wildlife pond that has always had frogs, toads and salamanders in and around the area. I gave up on the fishy pond. I gave up 113% ! My DH has not given up since over the winter magically there appeared 4 beautiful koi and 3 or 4 goldfish in a stocktank in the basement along with a filter, plants.... Hmmmmmmm. I am afraid to put these guys outside. Something will make a meal out of them or Daisy will try to make friends with them or rescue them from drowning like she did the plants. Mike can be in charge of what ever he has planned. I'm never going in the backyard. Simple solution! LOL! :-) C3D ... Still gave up!

My Korean maple is pretty vigorous. I planted it on the north side of the house where it's shaded during the hottest part of the day. This means the soil is cool. I never water mine. I did amend the soil with quite a bit of compost when I planted in five (?) years ago. The soil here is nothing special -- mostly clay. I cut it back two years ago but that just encouraged it to throw four foot vertical branches. My research tells me the plant will attain the tiered, horizontal look on its own. I'm just going to stand back and let it grow, though I will limb it up a bit. Here's a close-up of the flowers: The leaves' color each fall is a parrot's pastiche of oranges, splashy reds and yellows, all parti-colored on each leaf. Since the plants we purchased from Green Value were not labeled cultivars, it may be that these are grown from seed. If this is true, they may be a varied lot: a litter of mixed hardiness, habit and sensitivity. I am now seeing KM in nurseries everywhere. I understand the U of M is using KM to lend hardiness to its Japanese maple program. Who knows? Maybe in a few years there may be a JM for zone 4. I have a friend who grows his KM in zone 3 North Dakota with little problem. Don't give up. A bit early to show my bald cypress, but here's a picture I took an hour ago. It is just now beginning to bud out.

Sorry, you're right. It's the CO, not CO2, that's the killer when burning charcoal. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that around 25 people a year die from burning charcoal in an enclosed area without proper venting. Years back when these indoor grilles were popular, a number of folks died using them even though they did have some sort of chimney. When big ice storms and major power failures happen, there are often cases of people getting sick, even dying, when they try to grill with charcoal or use a kerosene heater indoors without proper ventilation. Because CO is colorless and odorless, you won't know if it is being vented. An alarm is a must if you intend to use one of these.

I'm a wuss, I like a little heat but I don't want the enamel on my teeth to bubble. My husband has already completely burned off all his taste buds, so the hotter the better for him, LOL. That said, I don't want hot peppers in everything. I love Linda Lou's sweet pickles and my Grandma's sweet relish and would never consider adding hot peppers of any kind. I'll often make two batches of dill pickles, one with hot peppers for the hubs and one plain for my Grandson. I love a bit of Habanero Gold on a bagel with cream cheese but wouldn't add hot peppers to strawberry or grape. I do have about a dozen jars of pickled jalapenos that will probably get dumped out this year, they're a couple of years old and no one eats them at all, on anything. Annie

We got AARP 5 years ago. Hubby qualified, but didn't want to sign up. Then I told him we would save about $100 per year on our homeowners and auto insurance. All of a sudden he was happy to be "old".

You get discounts on your internet account if you belong to aol and a few others.You also save money on your insurance if you have them take it out of your checking account.When I first joined aarp it was $2.00 now I pay $10.00 but I dont mined because I do feel they really have our interest at heart.I did not feel this way at first but after haveing two insurance go out of bussiness in my state I was glad aarp took me. So happy to have read these posts today. We are leaving for Florida tomorrow for a little vacation and California next month. I forgot all about my husand's AARP discount. He usually forgets too.
We will be sure to take advantage of it now, for not only the hotel discounts but other things mentioned.
