quartzite quality question please help

I am planning on white moon quartzite for my island and have been lucky enough to find a slab less than 2 miles from my house but... it has a couple of pebble size divots with what looks like rust coloring around the edges. I didn't see any cracks or fissures. Also there is a fair amount of light orange/rust color and some green (really green) swirls. Is this typical of this type of stone or should I keep looking?

Hi gb85 - I have luce di luna or quartzite bianca quartzite - I just googled white moon quartzite and it looks like they all may be the same stone. Does your slab have strong linear striations?

I cannot really comment on the divots, I will leave that to the stone experts. My slabs did not have divots, but they did have some rust colouring. I saw slabs with more and less of the rust. We have a few spots of it, it doesn't bother me at all. In fact I like the brownish/slight orange colour, it goes well with my cabinets. I've posted an image below - it is hard to see but there are a couple of small spots on the right hand side of the sink cut out. I did see slabs with larger streaks of rust right through the slab. I can tell you that the small amounts of rust colouring in our slabs didn't seem to pose an issue or concern to the fabricators.

Thanks for responding. Yes the color in your sink looks like what I saw so thankfully it must be natural to the stone. I am hoping someone responds about the green swirls and the divot.

Hi Atlanta-John! Greetings from Fargo, ND!! I agree...use Satin on the main body!!! Flats tend to hold dirt more...simple as that. Some may grumble that "no one uses Satin...blah-blah...", BUT they don't have to clean YOUR house! I could give a rat's A$$ if Flat is "more appropriate" to some painters, etc. A sheened paint, like an Exterior Eggshell or Satin, will stay cleaner, and wash-up nicer. I would use exactly your sheen-choices in a heartbeat. FADING: ALL artificially created colorants; like Yellows, Greens, Magentas, & Blues; WILL fade. The question is...how fast? * It's mainly a question of paint/colorant quality. * You shouldn't have any problems with Duration IF...they actually use that paint-line. * The substrate HAS to be dry before priming. * I'd use a GRAY primer under TWO coats of the Duration Green Satin. * Paint shouldn't be applied in temps over 90. * It'll dry too fast before it has time to bond with the primer. The actual "working-time" of a top-line paint like that is SECONDS/maybe a MINUTE...if it's too hot outside. It'll just lead to premature film-failure. I work at a C2 retailer... * The people who've used C2's Exterior just LOVE it! * Avg retail is low-to-mid $40's/gal. * Percent Volume Solids avg's. ~ 40%. * Expensive colorants too! A Qt. of the High-strength Yellow equals a dinner-for-two $$... * High-quality binders & colorants are the key to any paints success (along with proper prep & priming). Lurker-- Thanks for the help.....i think you helped me when I got my softener a few years back...hopefully you can help me fix my mom's water.... Retested the water..... results are still the same. Low Ph, High Iron. No bacteria. Let me ask a quick question upfront: Are there any health hazards to continue using this water as is? I understand the high iron can cause staining on surfaces (it already has) and the acid can ruin copper pipes (although most of her pipes are PVC or some sort of plastic), but can it cause health problems? Also, this condition of high iron is recent. Over the summer, the water from all taps started sputtering, seemingly cause of air in the lines. The plumber/well guy came out and tried the simple, cost effective solutiuons first. 1. Compressed air in the well to clean the well screen. She has a shallow well. He did this quite a bit. The screen was dirty and we thought that solved the problem....Nope. 2. Changed the pump, retention tank. Nope. 3. Then changed all the piping from the well to the retention tank. The problem in the end was a collapsed pipe that ran from the well to the tank. Could the repeated use of the compressed air down the well (in order to clean the well screen) caused some sort of change in the water, like an influx of iron? The iron (at least to the naked eye) has decreased somewhat since the summer, although it is still there as evidenced by the water test. A couple of months ago the iron would settle out of a cup of tap water within a week....now you put a cup of tap water on the counter and the orange iron sediment settles out in a few weeks. But the water still smells like a cup of loose change....the metal smell. She's had some estimates so far. One local guy came to the house, tested the water and said a "neutralizer and Conditioning system" would be about $1900. CAI online suggested a "chemical injection system with a downstream carbon filter." About $1000 for the equipment, plus the cost of labor for a plumber to install. Like I said in my original post, unfortunately, she doesn't have much disposable income right now. The quotes of $1000 plus caused her some sticker shock....and some serious agita. Pllus, on an aesthetic/practical side, the local guy said he would have to install it in her kitchen pantry (where the water heater and current sediment filter is) and it would cause her to have to remove almost all the storage/food shelving in there.... Ugh. I've gone on long enough. So does she have any options here??? Thanks again. If you need any other info, let me know. mike

I don’t want to make a wrong impression that I am not willing to pay remaining 40% for this job. The main point is that I want them to provide me with a good/finished product. So far the quality does not meet my expectation and it was not my fault that they made cracks in the stone while processing, delivering, and installing it. Before the installation, I went to the fabricator’s warehouse to inspect the slabs and both slabs looked good except for couple of the areas where I found tiny cracks. I communicated very clearly that I won’t accept those cracks regardless in which part of the countertop it’s applied. I stayed there for several hours to do the layout for the countertop to avoid those cracks. And I made it very clear to the fabricator that I won’t accept any cracks in the stone and I would rather choose a different slab than get the original slabs with the cracks. They reassured me that there won't be any cracks and I dont need to reselect new. When we finished the layout, NONE of the countertop pieces had any cracks on them. And this what I received

Quality check - engineered flooring brands. Please help!

If you are not a budget, I would highly recommend Carlisle wide plank flooring. We installed about 2,000 sf of their engineered European oak, I think with some type of oil or wax finish, but it supposedly does not require re-oiling every year like Duchateau. We were shocked at how strong and stain resistant the floors are! We tested a sample before we bought with red wine, jelly, crushed blueberries/blackberries, etc.... Even after hours, it all wiped right off with no stain. We have two kids and two dogs, including one that weighs 80 pounds and that destroyed our previous red oak floors with a polyurethane coating in a condo. After four years, these floors look brand new. There are maybe at most a handful of light scratches/dents (main one from our new fridge install. But these are barely visible and we never felt like we had to touch up anything! Never had any other kind of problems. Only complaint is that maybe 5% of the boards some markings/colorations issues, but I understand that is to be expected from all companies, which is why you order a little extra (although at the price Carlisle charges, they should just inspect and pull those bad planks off the production line). Unfortunately, most of their floors cost upward of $14/sf uninstalled with some quite higher, which is prohibitive for many. We are now looking to maybe using Carlisle again in a new house (although reconsidering because of the price), but when I read all the complaints about other brands (like dents from dropping a spoon), it makes me feel like the extra cost is worth it in the long run! Sure, we could get floors for well under $10 that might have a similar look and save $20K+, but what's the point if they will look awful in a few years? If you have the budget, I highly recommend Carlisle.

I have quartzite too but no divots. I definitely have a lot of veining and many many different colors of gray, greenish-gray, sporadic flecks of a bluish-green and many shades of white.

They can replace divots with a crystal composite to fill if it's big, but the smaller ones can easily be filled with some material (epoxy). I know someone who had a kid who dinged their granite regularly with pots and pans (I urged her to take those ways from her toddler!). On my counter, there was a brown spot that looked like a burn mark but was clearly part of the stone on one of my slabs--they dug it out and filled it in with a color that somewhat matches.

If you love the slab, work around the spots you don't like as best as you can, but if you can find one without the divots, much better I think.

Menlo Farmhouse - what is the name of your quartzite, pictured on 4-8-2010 please? Since you've likely been living with it since, can you give an over-all review/opinion about how you like or dislike the choice? So beautiful... Thanks for sharing, in advance.

We just installed Mother of Pearl quartzite (which I love!), and we do have just a little bit of rust coloring throughout it as well, but not so much that it bothers me. I love the movement of the stone. We also do have a few very small divots or more like "grooves" in the stone, which tbh I did not even notice until after the slab was installed. I think they can just be typical of quartzite. I did have them fill a couple of them w/epoxy after we were installed, and now they are totally smooth. I would add that we LOVED our slab so much that we felt that any of the minor "imperfections" just added character to it. Go with your gut and if you think that there are too many things that don't sit right with you, I'd keep looking. :) Can you share a picture of the slab?
