Range hood options in old house with low ceiling?

I'm not finding many options for an island range hood for a remodel of an old farmhouse with a 7' 4" ceiling. The vast majority require at least an 8' ceiling. I did find a Kobe IS123 hood with a 16" stack option that may work.

Someone has suggested that we take an under-cabinet or wall-mount hood, build a box on top of it to attach it to the ceiling and contain the ductwork. That will give us a bit more clearance between the cooktop and the bottom of the hood.

Does anyone have experience with this option, and if so, do you have any photos of the result.

Thoughts on Kobe hoods and/or suggestions about island range hoods that will work with this limited height will also be appreciated.

Well, it's not exactly fitting with the farmhouse style, but you can also get vents that pop out of the countertop behind the cooktop.

Hmm. I thought I already replied to this, but I don't see it.

I have 7'6" ceilings, and a range on a peninsula. I used a VentAHood EuroPro island hood. With this hood you must order the duct cover custom. Mine was 6" tall! (The hood itself is 18".) This gives me the recommended 30" spacing between counter and hood.

You should be able to order a 4" duct cover as well.

Its not a cheap solution. My duct cover was over $300. But it looks nice and works well. Here is a picture:

Its not a great picture, but its the best one I have handy that shows the hood transition to the ceiling.

The way this works is that the duct cover is bolted to the ceiling, and the hood hangs from it. Mine was installed flush with the framing and the ceiling installed around it.

Toronto Veterinarian, by long, I meant tall. The existing unit is 5" too tall. mtnfever - Those are all very nice but they are more expensive than I can afford. The Cook's Kitchen - At 5" too tall, they would have to cut into the housing to shorten it, but it's the best option so far. Lesson learned though, next time I wait to purchase. If you are trying to find a wall mounted hood with a chimney cover you will have to find a company that is able to cut the chimney covers for you. We offer this service but so do other companies, or you can buy a hood you want and then get it cut at a local metal shop.

The height won’t be a concern if the width is greater than the cooking area. That keeps anything flammable from being directly over the flame zone. The depth will be a concern. Corian, and wood, is flammable, and will scorch if too low above your cooking surface. Even with a liner. Being deeper, especially at that lower height, runs into head bonking issues too. If you have the hood custom created out of metal, the concern about being over flame goes away. High temp powder coating it to a custom RAL color would integrate it into your other choices. But matching colors of different materials starts to be an issue at that point. Powder coating will have the least options for exact color, so if your matching cabinet colors, or counter colors, that should be the first done in the chain.

Of course there are options between a ceiling grate that makes you climb on top of the cooktop to clean it and nothing. First, if you can do a ceiling grate, you can do a standard island hood. Then there’s a whole host of other things that haven’t been explored. Post your layout and pictures of the space.

I am in the same position except for a wall mount hood. I have a monogram hood with a telescoping duct cover.I have been on the phone with G.E. 5 times over the past two days and their brain trust are useless.The only thing I can figure is I will mount the hood at 28"-30" from the cook top and modify the supplied duct cover.If it was not for the great deals I got on the appliances I would be shop for another option.
This forum is amazing, everytime I am about to post a question someone else seems to have a similiar problem.
