Christmas Stars Quilt 2 pic - opinions sot

OK, in this one I decided to add the strips to the blocks and make them 16". I did not center the blocks in all of them in order to have the stars offset. I haven't actually finished the sewing part and wanted some expert advise first. Is it too wonky??

That's going to be just lovely when done. I think offsetting the stars is genious. You can actually make a pattern out of the offsetting. Go for it.

Oh, I really like that! of course, my belief is the more different fabrics used, the better.

Hi Sharon - last year's chairman did divide up the blocks for more than one winner, but she would do it even if there were only 16 blocks. The only time I won, I got 8 blocks. So, since they made me in charge, I said this year, the winner could decide if she wants them all - she always does! The winner did make three blocks herself so she had three chances. Of course, every month I have made two or three blocks as examples and I've never won yet! Thanks again, everyone.

It's done!!! Only took 94 hours. (I keep records of all my projects.) That doesn't include shopping for the ooodles of fat quarters and other fabric, washing/drying/ironing them all. Fits nicely on our bed, with matching pillow: Here's the detail of stitching around the red squares: I used a very utilitarian three step zig-zag stitch (two rows vertically and two rows horizontally) on the split star blocks. The triangular pattern echoes the triangles in the block. You can't see the stitching unless you get about two feet away from the quilt. The blue thread "reads" as a neutral from a distance. Here's the backing fabric with just the top of my label (didn't want to show my full name,) which was ironed on with fusible webbing. My Viking does programable (sp?) stitching. I am a bit of a renegade when it comes to attaching binding. I put it on backwards of most instructions...sewing to the back first, then turning to the front and machine stitching. I just don't want to take the time for all that hand slip-stitching: I won't post a pic of the stitching in the log cabin blocks since I posted that one way back on Jan. 23 (bridging stitch.) I didn't want to turn corners while quilting, so I stitched all in one direction from one side of the quilt to the other, using my thread cut button and "fix" (stitching in place to secure) button on my machine. The down side of that is having to cut all the threads on the back, when I was finished quilting. Even though the thread cutting feature is a blessing, it still leaves 3/4" threads on the back. Faye, I first thought of making each Del.Mts. block scrappy w/in itself, but I think I will be happy with making each block all one fabric and mixing them up so each block is a different fabric from it's neighbors. For a while I was debating about putting all four borders on the quilt as the top will be under pillows and the bottom will be tucked behind the foot of the bed. But my quilting buddies convinced me to put borders on all sides. Teresa

geezerfolks...thanks for sending the link. Magothyrivergirl...again, thanks for the link. Others thank you for the upbeat comments. Went looking yesterday for the dark fabric to bind the quilt in. My local shop didn't have it, but was nice enough to get the number of it for me so I can shop around or look online. I shop a lot of fabric stores in the area, but I'm always happy when they refer to each other or go that extra mile to help a customer. Almost makes the price of fabric OK ;-)

I agree with the others, the way you have them set is great. It really makes the quilt. Nothing mondane about it.

Nothing wonky about that shashing, it is terrific. This will be another great quilt. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

A great way to use the different blocks. I like the off center use of the scrappy strips and only adds to the style. It will be interesting to see what you have in mind for the boarders. From what I see here it will have to be perfect. It couldn't be better. Jayne

Please post a picture after you get it all together. Looks great. I wouldn't even think of putting one together that way. I'm too much of a follow the book type of person although I'm trying to break out of the the mold :-)

Vicky, I know what you mean. I've always been a very logical, all i's dotted, all t's crossed type of person and I'm deliberately trying to push myself the other way. That's probably why I'm looking for reassurance with this one. Did you see my other one? There is another thread for my 'by the book' settings for the other half of my blocks. Baby steps.

I love it! Your sashing give it a great dimension that you wouldn't have otherwise. Go for it!

It's going to be charming! I like that wonkyness. But have you thought about turning the left-hand block in the second row 2 turns clockwise, so that there is a bit of sashing between it and the middle block as there is with all the other blocks? (Is my own "dotted i's and crossed t's" personality showing?)

I love those stars--they remind me of the pinwheels I made as a kid--and I can't wait to see the finished quilt. It was fun, too, knowing who made some of the blocks.

Its funny you point that out biwacko, I thought long and hard about that joint. I wanted various spacings (to make it wonky) and this is the only zero space. I had one other at one point and ended up changing it to only one. I decided I liked the extreme variation between that and the pair below with 4 spaces. The problem with spinning it is that it would exactly match the one above it. I even specifically used the one with the darker background to help with the separation. (Like I said, all my i's.....)

Anyway, after all this rambling, I thank you for the suggestion but its already sewn, so too late. I like that we both noticed this though. Does this jump out at anyone else?

That quilt will be gorgeous! I love the way you did the sashing & offset the stars. Just beautiful.
