Has Anyone Painted Vertical Blinds?

I have seen threads in which people have discussed painting the fabric of furniture pieces but I am unable to find the threads using the search feature.

What I am looking for is any information & suggestions on painting some fabric vertical blinds. Because of budget reasons I would like to keep the current vertical blinds as they seem to be a good quality and work (for the room and functionally) for the time being. They are a dusty rose/taupe color and I am looking to paint them a white (probably the same color as the trim).

Has anyone done this? What was the result? How did you do it? Did you use latex paint? I know the members of this forum have a vast amount of experience and knowledge and would really appreciate any direction you can give me. We are helping a young family fix up their first home and money is tight right now. Thank you in advance.

My trim is white dove & I love it - I purchased levelor blinds through JCP 2 yrs ago and brought home samples before choosing the white (forget the name now) - It was a near perfect match. Graber swiss coffee? I'm not familiar with - but darker blinds show dust a lot! my white ones are dusty, but it doesn't show. Also, if your application is a sunroom I would highly recommend faux wood blinds - wood blinds have the propencity to warp in areas that receieve a lot of sunlight or moisture. Everything you read on the last 2 postings are true. I work for a major manufacturer of vertical blinds and the fabric will not dye well. You may be able to order new vanes but you will need to make sure the clips will work on the track you have or if using the old clips remove them carefully as sun damage make them brittle. Now being the thrifty crafter I am, how about using a fabric adhesive spray glue and putting a new fabric over the old. Just choose one that does not fray or use fray check on the edges before gluing. Happy Decorating!

I was told that for our 108" slider, the stack would be 27". That seems like a lot to me. It would cover 1/4 of the opening. I know there has to be some stack, but it would be 10 more inches than our blinds currently cover.

Roll-ups? Lay them out FLAT, pull them taut and use a roller and latex paint (parallel to the slats) or spray paint. Let it dry. If you don't load them up, they don't gum together. Move the roller string out of the way. The weaving strings will be flexible enough.

It would make them a bit stiffer, but that's not a problem.

I plan to paint ours before we sell - plain off white instead of the 1990s mottled mauve and peach. They look good with the floors, but would be better if neutral.

ADDING:
Looking at those instructions ... It would be easier to lay them flat on a drop cloth and paint them with a foam roller just like you do upholstery.

Two coats, maybe three, but dilute the first coat with water to get good penetration as aprimer.

Thanks for the replies.

They seem to be easy to get off the tracks to be able to lay them out on a drop cloth. I will have to decide if spray painting would be better than the foam roller - even without a breeze I seem to get paint all over in the past.

These seem to be made with heavy duty textured fabric with no plastic backing. They are heavily weighted with metal so they do not swing around much. The thicker weight with the paint should work ok.

Some of the instructions talk about fabric paint. Is this the same paint that is used to paint teeshirts found at Michael's or Hobby Lobby? Or the little bottles? If they are going to need a lot of paint I am wondering if the latex wall or ceiling paint would work better? Would you spray coat them with a protective coating? (Better collect up my % off coupons!)

Anyone else know how these have turned out?

I would suggest that if you know what brand the blinds are, you check out the cost of new slats before you try painting. It often happens that once you have the hardware you can get replacement slats for a minimal price.

The blinds on my living room cost $150 back when I got them in 2006. To swap out the slats would cost about $50.
